I had been procrastinating for quite some time about hiring a web designer, but was so glad to be matched up with J-357 through thumbtack! From our first conversation, I knew that her great personality was going to be the perfect fit. She was extremely easy to work with, and provided exceptional communication. Being that we live on opposite coasts, I truly appreciated her quick communication and adaptability. She really went above and beyond to work with me across time zones, and was extremely flexible with my schedule. But it didn't stop there...the website that she designed for me is absolutely amazing; it is truly everything I envisioned and more! J-357 provided a training session once the website was complete. She is great to work with if you are not tech savvy, and explains the details in clear and simplified terms. She is extremely patient, takes into consideration your suggestions, and is extremely quick with the edits. Compared to other web designers that I researched, her pricing is extremely reasonable. J-357 provided an awesome service all around. I would recommend this web designer to anyone who is looking for a high quality, professional or personal website. Thanks J-357!

I have always been annoyed when something promised doesn't occur. Belinda passed my first very important test. She started and finished as she promised. I could tell that she thoroughly read my manuscript and paid attention to the plot. The basics, grammar, was well done and made my novel read more easily. Her suggestions, ninety per-cent of which I followed, were entirely appropriate and correct. What amazed me was Belinda's ability to remember some item in the book that occurred 40 pages earlier. For example, "didn't you say on page 11,....." when her note to me appeared on page 51. She promised to help pre and post editing, either in e-mail form or call and that was most appreciated. Overall, five stars.

Due to my diminishing knowledge of English grammar, I searched the Internet for an editor to help navigate the murky byways of periods, commas, verb endings and sentence structure. Thankfully I came upon Steve Dulas, a former copy editor for a local county newspaper in the San Francisco Bay area. I couldn't be more pleased with Steve’s work. Not only does he have a lifetime career in editing and turning out “clean” copy, but I found he also carefully reads for content and offers creative and sometimes just common sense advice to look at vague or weak areas so that the narrative flows and is coherent. This advice is always given as a kind suggestion; Steve is never demeaning or heavy handed. Steve reviewed half of my book (45,000 words) in a timely two week period, sending me one copy with the changes and yet another copy with creative thoughts in specific places. It really was an outstanding job. I can happily give Steve a five star reference and am certain anyone would be as pleased as I was to find him. I plan to use him again.

Ms. Halper scores highly in all five categories. Her editing encompasses logic, English usage, and general organization. She leaves an option for personal preference, as in, "You may prefer to say this this way, but I would prefer that way," and leaves the final decision to the author. She works diligently; I receive her edits in a timely manner. Her cost is reasonable. I feel lucky to have found such a competent resource.

Susan is great to work with. She listens well, is patient and works to incorporate your ideas into the resume. Another thing I like about her is that she has a way of stating things that is catchy and fresh rather than the typically sterile "corporate" manner of summarizing one's work history. This was especially helpful in my case, because my employment history is choppy and I am recently getting back into the professional workforce after a long layoff.

I know what agents and publishers are looking for in manuscripts, query letters, book proposals, and career authors. I have been writing for years, and this allows me to write flexibly based on subject matter. My background in fiction writing means that I can write non-fiction from a variety of perspectives, in a myriad of voices, and for diverse purposes. My love of reading, and passion for storytelling, mixed with an interest in marketing means that I can edit fiction from the perspective of a reader, with respect to the writer's process, and explain the relationship between presentation of the story and the reader's perspective to the writer. This combination and holistic approach to editing can help turn a good story great. My familiarity with fiction editing means that I can edit articles, essays, and assorted non-fiction works and shorter fiction with rapid speed that also does not take away from the quality of thought and attention to detail. Whatever you need written, I can write. Whatever you need me to edit, I can hone. My goal is to work with my clients to realize their vision.

I can help write/edit papers, and essays for school (middle school, high school) and tutor for math levels up to algebra and pre-calculus.

About

I am a published author. My original book was over 3000 pages so I had to cut it down to a series. I have two books out and working on the third one (all from the original book.) I find more content each time I edit so I suspect a long series. I have always had a passion for writing and can usually write 'out of nowhere' which means I can take an idea and run with it. I am best with long papers but that doesn't mean I can't help with short ones. I am fluent in Spanish so I can translate documents or make new ones from scratch. I have also edited other author's work for compensation. I am also well versed in Photoshop if you have graphic design needs for your documents. I have done many brochures, manuals, etc. in my career and I find art is just as fun as writing.

I am a two-in-one deal. I have an English degree with a minor in technology that includes HTML5, CSS, Adobe GoLive, etc.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
