It's really had to find a handyman that is responsible, does a outstanding job, professional and reasonable prices. Larry was the right person for my job and i'm sure for your job also. I hired him to put light fixtures under my garage awning, run electrical to new light, put a breaker with a plug. Larry is outstanding. the work he did made me realize that i'm not going to go look nowhere else. He will be my handy man for future jobs. Trust me don't look nowhere else. Call Larry form Handee Werx and you will be satisfied the first time he does the job.

Our experience with Hector was amazing. He installed cabinets, lighting, and electrical work in our garage (basically remodeled the garage). He is extremely hard-working and treated the job as if he was doing it for his own house: no shortcuts. His prices are very reasonable and he is a man of his word! You cannot go wrong with Hector! Excellent work and we look forward to working with him on ALL upcoming projects. We have found a handyman for life!

Very professional. Elias was prompt and texted ahead with his arrival time. I’m so glad I chose Thumbtack. To say I’m pleasures with his workmanship would be under stating it. Amazing job, he even framed out my doggie door to help support it. I supplied the 2x4 and he cut it to fit. HIRE THIS GUY, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you Elias.

Octavio was great, knowledgable, and professional, was early to our scheduled time to install my garage door opener and I was a little late. You can tell he knows his stuff. We had to improvise to install and he had no problem doing that and even went to purchase equipment from home depot that he needed. He offered all the info I needed to operate and maintain my garage to prevent damage or accidents after the install. Everything was neatly disposed of. He offered to look at another project for me on the spot which I appreciated. Thanks again. Will definitely be recommending him to anybody for garage door needs

Contacted George with a list of projects I had in mind, but needed a price to see how much I could get done and what the costs would be. George came over to give me a quote and a breakdown of costs of each project and payment schedule, which I appreciated. We went ahead with the work. One of the bigger projects we had George and his team do was to knock down our existing patio and concrete and put up a new one. Old patio was 15' x 20' we did a new 15' x 40' patio. Very happy with the quality of work and the patio itself. Other projects include removing bulkhead and putting up new drywall, installing can lights, new roof, and putting up new doors. I was most impressed by two things - 1) the open communication between us, and 2) the professionalism and politeness from George and his workers. Even little hiccups were properly communicated and worked out. I will definitely be working with them again.

Tom was very professional and accommodating. My garage door opener had stopped working and after troubleshooting myself, I realized whatever the issue was, was something I probably should leave to a professional to fix. Tom was able to come to my home on short notice and diagnosed the issue within minutes. His pricing is reasonable and he was very friendly and informative of what needed to be done as well as offering tips for ongoing maintenance. I will definitely contact Tom again for any Garage Door/Opener needs and I highly recommend him.

From the moment I connected with Chad, I felt a sense of comfort and support in helping fix my garage door. He walked me through the entire process and provided me with a wide range of options. While other companies would price gouge me, Chad showed true integrity and was transparent with his costs and all that was involved. From beginning to end I felt 100% confident that I was getting the most value and best service. His professionalism was top notch. The work quality was second to none. He accomplished, what other garage door repair companies quoted me for, in half the time and price. If anybody, including myself, needs future garage door help I know I can depend on Chad's knowledge and expertise.

James was great! I described what happened with our garage door on the phone and he gave me an estimate. He came out at the agreed appointment time and repaired the door quickly. He also took the time to inspect the whole system and make sure everything was working properly. He is very knowledgeable, polite and efficient. I was concerned the repair was going to be costly, but it was very reasonable! Thank you, James!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.
