Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

Tyler was one of the best electricians that I’ve ever had the experience with working with. Great prices and clearly communicated what the project would need and how he would go about doing it. Even when he wasn’t comfortable with a job he was super honest and straightforward. He will be the only electrician I will be using in the Bay Area for a long time.

I wanted recess lighting installed in my living room. The electrician that did the work was amazing. Prior to the work being done, the electrician explained to me what he had to do before he started work. Isaac was great! I’ve had them do three projects and plan to do more business with them very soon! Excellency!

Kenny is a versatile problem solver when it comes to electrician projects. The expectation was that I would purchase all supplies such as the dimmer switches and then Kenny would schedule a time to come in and do the installation. I'm definitely planning on working with him again.

We had her install a new light fixture (run wire and place dimmer). She also patched and painted, which is so difficult to find with an electrician. She was very communicative and did great work! We will definitely hire her again.

Showed up 10 minutes early and did an excellent job trouble shooting and replacing two shorting circuits. Will definitely be using him again. When you need a real electrician who will get it right first time, hire Juan. He figured out an issue that two other handymen couldn't fix because they just don't have the knowledge and training that Juan has.

Richard's Electrical Services is by far the best electrician we have ever hired (and one of us works in construction!). They were extremely responsive and gave us very accurate quotes that were priced fairly. They went above and beyond to complete our job, even when it turned out to be more complicated than we anticipated. They also very patiently completed additional scopes of work that we asked them to do when we realized how good they were. Importantly during COVID-19, Richard and Rick used the best safety protocols that we've seen any professionals use to date - including for example using Clorox wipes to wipe down installed cords, tools, outlets, etc. At the end of the job they cleaned up the work site and took away their own trash. All in all, by far the best electricians we could have hoped to find. Richard and Rick, thanks so much for everything! Future customers will be lucky to work with you.

As a realtor who's always looking for good reliable electricians and handymen, I have to say I was impressed with Gin. He was at the property on time and got started quickly. For some reason, all my request weren't included in my job description but Gin finished for a little extra. We had lights that weren't working (he fixed them), replaced ceiling fans and other wall and ceiling fixtures that were not up to code. All around he was more than anything reliable with a great professional attitude.

We unexpectedly needed an electrician on a Sunday, and Rafael was not only the first to respond, he was willing to come over immediately. What we thought would be a simple job turned out to be much more than that, and even entailed removing some stubborn exterior brick work (long story). Boy, were we lucky to find Rafael. He is skilled in many areas, and he was exactly who we needed for our job. He did great work and we couldn't be happier. We'll definitely use him again!

We hired Ryan as he stated he was a licensed electrician and his fee was $50 per hour. We asked for proof of his license and he provided a copy of his application for California electrician’s license. However, it was not legible and difficult to know what the document said. Nonetheless, we moved forward with Ryan as we believe he displayed good intention and was readily available. Unfortunately, he worked with my husband as I was out of the country, and we pay a full day of work plus an additional $200 charge for “parts” without a receipt. Ryan promised to return and complete the work as one chandelier arrived broken and needed replacement, and at that point, he was going to provide a receipt. An issue on our end, my husband paid Ryan from the wrong checkbook and his check of $800 was return. However, we honor his fees and replace it with cash immediately after we learned of the incident, yet the total amount exceeds the day per diem based on $50 per hour. We also take responsibility, for moving forward when we should have waited for proper documentation and better communication. It was an expensive lesson for us to learn.

I ordered a Nest thermostat which Nest claimed would be compatible with my system. It wasn't. I was quoted 240 dollars by Camex builders for the installation. The device was not charged as I did not know so we had to wait one hour to charge it. We took a long break to get coffee. After it was charged and many conversations with Nest Support it was determined that the device was not compatible. He told me the new rate was 300 dollars not 240 because I took more time than initially stated. I guess an estimate is after all only an estimate. The device was not compatible and not his fault to be honest. Nest did not fully look into the matter but since I was charged more than the quoted amount AND there was no finished product I cannot give 5 stars. I do not know if the electrician should be able to determine compatibility by looking at the system or not. But I think Nest said I should have taken a photo of the wall unit which they never asked me to. Overall, it was a disaster. I also got a very high quote from this gentleman to paint my small one bedroom apartment so that is not an option for me as well.

Please be careful with this guy, his communication is not good, nor complete. I say communication because I don’t want to say lie, but maybe by omission. Craig answered my need for an electrician to take care of a knob-and-tube issue I have. Now I know quite a bit about electric wiring and how it is done, just not knob-and-tube. We did two contacts through the system and he asked that I call, which I did. I explained what I needed and he seemed confident that he could do what was needed. He said he would need to see the work before giving a quote; I had noticed that he was in Milpitas and mentioned I didn’t want him to come all that way just for a quote. He said he had another job in Oakland and it wouldn’t be a problem. Next day he calls and says he will be at my place at 3pm and would check it out. I arranged for the time off and was there at 3. I get a call from him at 4:45 that he is on his way, an hour and 45 minutes late. He arrives and starts looking at the job, never gives me a quote and asks me to turn off the power. He says he’ll cut the wire and put it in a box and that will be fine (not sure that is the best or safest solution) and says the other two wires are dead. I can’t verify that as he has the tester but it isn’t going off when he touches them, so maybe he’s right, they were live before with my tester. We turn the power back on and he says how much did I quote you (What?) I said you didn’t, he says well my minimum for coming to Oakland is $250.00. (?!?!?!) But he says he’ll give me a deal and says $175.00. I pay him, grudgingly thinking that is way too much for what he did and if he’d told me that Monday morning I would not have engaged him. All the time he was there he was condescending and didn’t listen to anything I said. After he leaves I get my tester out and the wires he left were live so now I need to get someone else out to fix my still existing problem and I’m cheated out of $175.00. Two hours late, condescending, not truthful or forth-coming about his rates and doesn’t finish the job. Please, please, please get him to tell you upfront what everything is going to cost and what he is going to do. Be very careful with this one. One star is really too much. BEWARE.
