I'm a 29-year-old consultant, and as a professional, I'm invested in improving my business writing. Jenny has been teaching me the finer points of the English language, making my writing more impactful and effective in the professional setting. Jenny is highly organized and each week prepares a great lesson plan with supporting materials to work through. Currently, I've had 5 lessons with Jenny and my writing has vastly improved. I highly recommend Jenny for anyone looking to improve their knowledge of the English language, whether that be fundamental grammar or more advanced, stylistic writing techniques.

Michael is great, he has been tutoring my son for about 3 years now. He has taken him through algebra 1, Geometry, and they are currently in algebra 2. Michael is a man that has willingly gone the extra mile to make sure the job is done right! Trevor actually enjoys math now, thanks to Michael!

A friend recommended Dario to me as an engaging and capable math tutor. I needed extra instruction for my son in pre-algebra/ Algebra over the summer. Dario taught my son for 8 sessions in areas where he especially needed help. My son has personally expressed that Dario is very good at explaining and walking him through these areas of weakness in a way he could understand. Dario teaches in clear, relaxed and confident manner that makes for an ideal learning environment for students. I recommend him wholeheartedly!

"I' been learning math from Batu. I'm 56, and I've been really scared about taking my Algebra class. He help me learn the concepts really well and I got an A in my class. He really clear and had his own way of approaching the subject. I'm glad I chose him as a teach.

I recently went back to school and needed some help reviewing math for my college algebra class. There was a lot of material we were expected to know that I has forgotten because of the break I took from school. Jocelyn helped me find the gaps I had, filled them, and showed me how they applied to the work I was doing in class. Everything finally made sense, and I got an A in the class! Thank you Jocelyn!

We've been blessed to have found Tan when we needed the most help for my daughter. He had been her tutor for 2 years now, for Algebra 2 then Pre-Calculus. He was able to simplify complicated concepts for her so will be easier to understand, and was able to motivate her to study, even though at times she found it difficult to go on. Tan's style of teaching is not just about books and numbers, but was able to inspire my daughter to try to strive and overcome adversities in order to finish her studies.

My daughter has been working with Diane since about October last year. I have seen such an improvement in her math skills. Math no longer intimidates her and she is confidant enough to do homework on her own. Thanks Diane!!

BoostAcademy was an amazing find for my 2 boys. They changed schools recently and were completely lost with new Common Core math ideas. 2 lessons per week for just a few weeks and they are back at the top of their class! It's a great system that is easy to use and incredibly valuable to my family and probably yours.

About

I provide private Spanish tutoring to individuals and groups of all levels, from beginners to college level, including teachers, HS students, SDSU and UCSD students, border patrol and air marshal agents, business owners, doctors, nurses, travelers, retirees, psychologists, lawyers, and individuals of diverse occupations and ethnicities. I design a specific teaching curriculum for each type of student. I love languages, so I adapt to each student's accent, and I try to make it fun using different methods and techniques and expressions that are used everyday. I work both with conversation and grammar. I can teach via online or in person, at your place or mine, whatever is more convenient for you. I also recommend books if it's necessary or provide my own material if you are a beginner or have a special request (for job, travel, etc.) I also read Spanish authors novels, stories, or books with advanced students, and we discuss the subject of a specific paragraph or chapter. I am a very creative person, and I help my students in the best way I see possible based on my continue observation of their abilities and skills as well as their mood and personality.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
