Chef Pete Coleman offered us a competitive rate to cater our wedding reception for 145 people. Without hesitation, he provided an in-home tasting with our parents. He personalized the menu according to our tastes. Pete and his team catered the wedding, cleared tables, and served a signature cocktail, beer, and wine. Our wedding guests loved the food and friendly service. I would highly recommend Chef Pete!

Stephanie did an absolutely incredible job with the brunch we held the morning after our wedding. The food was absolutely delicious and she even provided all the ketchup and hot sauce a girl can ask for her with her eggs and hasbrowns. THE EGGS were cooked to perfection! That's so hard to do, and they were fluffy and delicious. We also had coffee and OJ. It was the perfect meal after a long night before. Everyone commented on the quality and we we're very happy with the event. I will most definitely be using Stephanie for future events.

Deborah catered the Sunday Brunch at our Wedding back in October. She served both the Bacon and Vegetable quiches as well as made some amazing caramel apple bread pudding. She finished it off with yogurt parfaits and roasted veggies. It was truly a spectacular feast and everyone was impressed!! The timing was perfect and the experience was great! I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

From the point of connecting with Daniella about my dinner party, to meeting with her in person beforehand to discuss menu and pricing, and on to the event itself, there was never a time I didn't feel confident in her experience and her ability to pull off a fantastic Greek dinner for my friend's 60th birthday. And that she did! My friends are still raving about her and I could not have been more pleased with every single detail. Food was fabulous! I highly recommend Daniella for any catering needs or for cooking for a private party. She handles it all. Wish I could have her cook for me on a regular basis!

Chef Arturo and Martha did a wonderful job catering our wedding in May 2016 and were so great to work with. We found them many months earlier and created a really exciting and unique menu and was happy to help us with special accommodations for dietary needs and preferences. Over the months of wedding planning we made changes to the menu and Arturo and Martha were very flexible. Arturo takes a great deal of pride in his food, their name really says it all, Arturo is careful to make his food not only delicious but beautiful, colorful, and intriguing. Some of our wedding guests commented that it was the best wedding food they had ever had. Arturo's sopes were such a big hit! Working with Arturo and Martha felt very personal. They are warm friendly people. I definitely recommend them for any special event.

Chef Hernandez made my bosses 25th Wedding Anniversary really, truly something special! They had a "Tour Around the World in 4 bites" (4 course) meal, in which they were able to be hands on, and learn new cooking skills. They described the night as a "HOME RUN!" and "The best night ever!" Chef Hernandez will ABSOLUTELY be our #1 contact for future events and parties.

My experience with Rachel catering my 60th birthday party was the best. She is very professional, curtious, and wonderful to work with. Her set-up, presentation, food, and even removal of everything was incredibly smooth. All my guests, & myself were amazed how wonderful everything she prepared was so tasty, & fresh. I'd recommend her to cater any event you may have, you will be most pleased.

Basic Catering is much more than catering company, it is a full service event company. Aristotle says "if a man does many things, they cannot do one thing well." That's not the case with Basic Catering. I hired them for a small wedding reception, and I was very impressed with their service. I'll list them as follows: 1. All my guests raved about the food. It was perfectly cooked and the quantity was worth the value. 2. They rent out their own party rentals (tables, silverware, plates, etc.) at a cost cheaper than the competitors. This was significant savings for me with no sacrifice on the quality. This also made clean-up a lot easier. I was not worried about the clean-up, but it did save me on venue costs. (They also do flowers) 3. Lastly, the most impressive aspect of Basic Catering is their professionalism. There will always be something missing or something that goes wrong. Their team is extremely resourceful, from their planners (Ben) to the people executing (Carie) and the waitstaff -- I am a big fan of resourcefulness. They thought of things I missed, and if something was wrong they made it right. They are quick and smart, and know how to get things done. They assisted in making one of the most significant days of my life a wonderful event. Thanks Ben. You did a fantastic job coordinating.

Liberation Foods BBQ was the highlight of our wedding reception! From the start of our wedding planning, Liberation Foods responded promptly to all of our questions and was flexible with our menu and budget. We were immediately impressed by the quality of the food and booked instantly for our backyard summer wedding of 150 people. Liberation Foods checked in with us frequently before our event which helped put us at ease during the planning process. On the day of our wedding, Liberation Foods was prompt and efficient with their set up. They were kind to us and our guests, adding to the overall atmosphere. Their food was a big hit and our friends are still talking about it months after! Without hesitation, I’d recommend Liberation Foods to friends and family for weddings/special events.

Daniel was an amazing caterer. He was extremely prompt and came with most of the catering gear he needed (which is good because I have very few kitchen tools). Our entire group loved the food: cheese/meat course, tuna tartar, couscous, salmon, and tiramisu. It was delicious! And as a bonus, we did not need to clean up :)

We recently hired Eileen and her staff with What's Cookin to cater a backyard luau party. From beginning to end, she was very easy to work with. The bottom line is that her food was AMAZING! What a talent!! Our party guests raved about the dishes she prepared. Since the party was themed, we worked together to come up with the perfect selections for a summer luau. Her staff that worked the party with her were super friendly and smiley, professional, and instinctively knew how to "be there" for our guests needs. As the hosts of the party, my husband and I were able to focus entirely on our guests, which is exactly what we were looking for. We were all very impressed with everything, and are certain we found our new favorite caterer! Thanks Eileen and your staff for a job well done!

Olive Cater team catered my birthday party in February and it was absolutely delicious. The buffet looked beautiful and had a wide variety of dishes with many vegetarian options. The shawarma was out of this world! Even though we eat a lot, we had leftover for the next day. It was fun to see the team cook and prepare the food at my house and they left the kitchen cleaner than it was before. I highly recommend Arkadi and Elinor service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
