I am a college student majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I sought Sushanta's help after I came among the last thirty in my Network Analysis class of 180 students. After one and a half months of rigorous online tutoring sessions I was among the top six in the same class. What sets Sushanta apart is his clarity of understanding of the subject and his ability to transmit the same into the student. I wish I had contacted him at the very beginning of the quarter as I am sure I would have been the class topper.

Archie has been tutoring me in college level algebra since March. He is extremely knowledgeable in math and has extensive teaching experience. He can explain the more difficult concepts very clearly. I tend to get frustrated easily and Archie is always very patient and encouraging. He tells me, "yes you CAN!" when I think I can't. He is punctual and always has a smile on his face. He has helped me gain the confidence I need to be successful in math classes. I highly recommend him.

Jeriah Kiang is an excellent tutor. He definitely helped me with not only my school grades, but my ACT grades (even though I was just in 8th grade). He is super easy to interact with and also makes the tutoring session fun. He a friend as well as a teacher!

My son has always felt confident in math but seemed to get bogged down by the small details and mistakes. He really wants to be an engineer. Kingsfield came in and gave a free assessment, which broke down his problem areas and how they related to the majority of his mistakes. As part of his math program, they also worked on his study skills, such as effective note-taking. I saw my son's confidence and enjoyment for school change in just the first few sessions. Over the course of his program, he told me he learned more from his tutoring sessions that he did in his high school math classes.

Troy has done exceptionally well working with my 16 year old son regarding his high school Pre-calculus subject.  Prior to getting Troy's assistance, my son was averaging in the 50-60% range on his quizzes.  After 3 sessions with Troy, my son scored an 89% on his most recent quiz.  I am pleased & I am looking forward to seeing more progress as he continues his sessions with Troy.

My daughter does not enjoy math. This year, as a freshman, she was given an unusual math class (Algebra) where the lesson is to be learned at home via YouTube videos and the homework would be done in class. In theory it sounds like a great idea, however, if you’re partially through a lesson plan and you have a question or if you are confused it’s very hard to continue. Especially in math. Lisa has been my daughters tutor for most of this school year and some of the last school year. She is wonderful!! She connects with the kids so well, she is patient and explains things in a way my child understands. My daughter truly enjoys working with her and it’s nice having her come to our house. As a parent, I appreciate her competitive prices and her flexibility. We’ve tried other places – Lisa is far away the best. My daughter was really struggling. Lisa was the missing link in getting her and keeping her up to speed. I would recommend Lisa to any parent looking for a math tutor for their child.

We have used Ben to tutor two of our kids in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. He is good at making difficult math concepts easy to understand. He is encouraging and will patiently work concepts from many angles until the student has a firm grasp of the material.

I found Meghan on Thumbtack after being extremely disappointed with 3 other tutors! Meghan always showed up on time and worked with my hectic schedule, I know she was in high demand with several other tutoring jobs but she still made me feel like I was her only customer. I passed my college Statistics course with a high B! Math has always been my largest struggle and this was my third attempt taking an upper division math course, Tutoring was pricey but completely worth it in the end!

Jennifer Wagner tutored my daughter in Algebra and Algebra 2 over 2 school years. She is an excellent tutor and I recommend her without hesitation. Jennifer presented math in a non-threatening way that enabled my daughter to learn and progress in ways she had never been able to in the classroom. Most regular classroom teachers only know one way to teach, and math is not a one-size-fits-all subject. I know that many students struggling with math also have severe confidence problems when it comes to math, which further hinders their progress. Jennifer not only understands all that, but she finds a way to present the material without making the student feel like they are somehow inadequate. Jennifer Wagner is an outstanding tutor! You will never regret having her work with your student!

DD Levine is the best math tutor ever! Each Saturday she gets on Skype with my 8th grade son, helping him to make sense of the advanced math he faces at his prep school. As a self-described "humanities kid," math is not my kid's strong suit. It's not mine, either. So I was thrilled to find DD. She is patient around various different learning styles, she is intuitive and knows exactly where in a problem my son is having a hard time understanding, and she enthusiastically finds work to challenge my son. I cannot rave enough about her! My son has seen his math scores go up, but perhaps more importantly, he has a new confidence around math that even his math instructor has commented on, several times. Plus, he doesn't have the anxiety-based "math freak outs" that he used to. This alone, has made DD's tutoring so valuable. We've had such a positive experience with DD that my 6th grade son is now working with her. Thank you so much, DD!!!

It was a pleasure to work with Ms Buller. She helped me with my pre-algebra lessons. We would meet either at her house or at a place close to both of us. She was always on time and very patient in helping me grasp some concepts I wasn't familiar with by explaining them in a straightforward, methodical way. In the 6 to 8 weeks she tutored me, my class grade went from a middle C to a high B which was my final grade. I am now eligible for Algebra I. I would recommend Ms. Buller to any struggling algebra student.

I primarily help students learn or develop their piano or clarinet skills. I have enjoyed playing these instruments for almost 12 years and have been fortunate enough to perform all over the United States. Math has a surprising connection to music. As a student of the agricultural sciences, I look forward to sharing my passion for art and math with you.

I am a current college student at Sacramento State. I transferred from Sierra College where I was awarded two associate degrees in Natural Science as well as Social & Behavioral Sciences. During my time in college I have taken numerous college level math courses in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. I have been a tutor for approximately 3 years and have tutored 3-6 students a semester. I have experience of tutoring common core math to students in grades 5th-10th grade.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
