Victor Ng-Thow-Hing says, "We hired Casa Utopia Builders to remodel both of our guest and master bathrooms. As we wanted high-quality materials and workmanship, I spent some time trying to find a reputable and flexible builder, with experience working with whole slab porcelain, solid material shower pans, curbless designs, licensing, design and a good network of suppliers and fabricators to work with. As these materials are expensive, it was very important that we find good contractors that are properly insured and licensed. Together with their designer Rinat, we came up with a design that met my requirements, as well as good suggestions to improve the design and alleviate costs by introducing us to new suppliers and options. The 3D renders were very accurate at predicting what the final project eventually looked like. The project proceeded in a streamlined manner, with the only delays associated with booking appointments for city inspections and some delivery delays of materials, both of which were not the responsibility of Casa Utopia. Casa Utopia was able to coordinate and work well with our glass installers to ensure proper drainage was supported. The team hired cleaners to ensure the worksite was tidy and clean and ready for use. Communication was frequent, prompt and professional, making project execution very efficient. The construction crew of Pablo and all his team, as well as the project manager, Raz were always very accommodating, professional and hard-working. Any requests we had were responded to within a day. We would definitely consider using Casa Utopia for any future projects due to this wonderful experience."See more

Sudarshan Kadambi says, "We hired Atlas General Construction for a large project, adding a 2nd floor and completely renovating the 1st floor. It was a complex, year-long project with a lot of infrastructure upgrades needed such as completely new plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. It has been a few months since we moved back in and we are completely satisfied with how everything has turned out, especially the finishes and detailing. We could tell Bill genuinely cares about the quality of the project, not just getting it done. And he's a genuinely good person who believes in keeping customers happy. Atlas' project manager Eric Rosales was very strong in execution and took pride in getting the details right without mistakes. Bill and Eric have a solid team of trades people, painters, carpenters etc. The Atlas back-office team was also of top of everything, clearly communicating payment schedules, invoices etc.Complex projects are never without challenges. Ours had its share of challenges too but the Atlas team was able to solve problems as they arose and if at all a mistake was made, it was quickly fixed when we pointed it out. You can tell how successful a project is based on what your relationship is at the end of it. Bill and Eric have now become good friends and I think that conveys everything."See more

Custom Home . is a Bay Area-based construction and design company specializing in remodeling, additions, ADUs, new construction, and commercial projects. Our mission is to combine high-quality construction with a streamlined client experience built around transparency, systems, and design-driven solutions. What makes us unique is our partnership with CLAH, an integrated ecosystem focused on construction, interior finishes, sourcing, furniture, and design innovation. Through CLAH, we are able to provide clients with a more connected experience—from planning and design to materials, finishes, furniture, and project execution. One of the biggest challenges homeowners face during remodeling is uncertainty in budget and final outcome. Our system was built specifically to solve that problem. We are able to provide clients with a detailed project budget from the beginning and work toward maintaining that approved budget throughout the project. Very few construction companies are willing to commit to this level of planning and transparency before construction starts. We also utilize advanced 3D rendering technology to help clients fully visualize their future home before construction begins. While many companies can create renderings, our difference is the ability to execute and deliver a final product that closely matches the approved design vision. Our goal is for the completed project to reflect at least 90% of the approved 3D rendering. In addition to construction and remodeling, we are expanding our ecosystem to source detached furniture and curated interior pieces that match the overall design and style of the home. This allows clients to experience a more complete and cohesive design process instead of managing multiple vendors separately. Unlike traditional contractors, our approach combines: • Detailed pre-construction budgeting • Design and construction integration • 3D visualization with execution alignment • Professional project management systems • Direct sourcing relationships • Technology-driven communication and tracking • Long-term client value and experience We specialize in: Kitchen & bathroom remodels Full home renovations ADUs and additions Deck and exterior repairs Roofing and termite repair Teardown and new construction Commercial tenant improvements At Custom Home., we are building more than projects—we are building a scalable ecosystem designed to bring better communication, better design, better budgeting, and better execution to the construction industry.See more

Layout, structural loads, and setbacks are easy to misjudge during building work. A qualified professional can typically plan around code, permit, and safety standards so the project is less likely to face rework, inspection delays, or rejected plans.

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

In a house plan, you can expect to see an overview of the construction site, floor plans, roof plans, foundation plans, electrical plans, exterior elevation and more. Always ask your architect what they plan to include in your house plan.
