I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

When we remodeled our bathroom we wanted to install porcelain shower panels (with matching sink backsplash) and, since it's not traditional tile, it was very difficult to find a tiler who had experience with them and was willing to do it. Juan took on the task and he did an amazing job. His measurements and cuts were great and the grouting (on the few seams we do have) is so smooth. The end result is beautiful.

Geoffrey was professional and friendly when he arrived to estimate the job of installing ceramic tile flooring in a sunroom. His bid was fair and I hired him. He was on time each day and the floor is beautiful. I already plan to hire him for several other jobs. Thanks, Geoffrey!

I worked with Floor Coverings International (Concord) for my bathroom remodel and love the worm they did so much I had them install new hardwood throughout my whole house and I could not have asked for anything better. I'm so lucky I found out about this company, after years of different contractors and big name business giving me nothing but headaches and hidden charges, this team came through and made everything easier. They don't your time with a tacky sales pitch, no sugar coated fees, and No surprises. Just a professional, dedicated, and diligent team that were with me every step of the way. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE on their team is amazing, from the front desk to the installation crew- they all treat their customers like family and go above and beyond to get you what you want! Thank you FCI!!! I love love love my new tigerwood floors, marble and white porcelain tile batbroom😍 You have helped me create my dream house and I will be telling everyone I know to use you!!!

I can enthusiastically recommend Steve Chui and his company, Kinetic Construction. My wife and I hired Steve to undertake a partial kitchen remodel that involved destroying existing tile so a new countertop could be laid, installing a backsplash, electrical, plumbing, painting and assorted other elements. Steve and his crew were great. First of all, Steve came in with a very fair bid and as we went through the process, there were no surprises. We were very pleased that the only change orders that came up were all items that we decided to add, and in all cases, the price Steve quoted was very fair. Steve was very focused and always one step ahead of the process. He identified issues early, getting our decision, solving small and large items that came up. He made some excellent recommendations along the way that improved the final outcome. The quality of the workmanship was very high. Our backsplash was complex, involving glass tiles inside ceramic tiles. The workmanship and attention to detail of his crew were amazing. It was the same with the painting and every other detail—very precise and careful. He and his crew also coordinated easily with the countertop layers, the stove installers and all the other folks who were in and out through the process. The end results were beautiful and we were thrilled with the final product. We know we could have paid a lot more but doubt we could have gotten a better kitchen. The logistics as we went through the remodel were also surprisingly easy. The workers were there when we were told they would be there. They were neat, quiet, and cleaned up every evening. Steve was always available, whether or not he was on site. He was always straightforward and easy to deal with. We always knew exactly what was happening. The whole experience was all much less stressful than we had anticipated. Our entire experience with Kinetic Construction was very favorable and we would highly recommend the company to others. We have since used Steve for a number of other smaller jobs, both electrical, plumbing and painting. It is always a pleasure. His team is always precise and neat, always on time. And Steve is very responsive. Once when we had a plumbing emergency with our disposal, he rushed over on a Saturday night and saved the day. But the best part is that Steve is such a smart and resourceful guy. He always comes up with the easiest, most efficient and thus most cost effective way to get you the result you are looking for and always with an end result of the highest standard. We are big fans!

Mike is a great contractor, adding a second bathroom with ceramic tile steam shower and tankless hot water in about 6-8 weeks. He does excellent work (the shower glass contractor commented on the great tile work). He sets expectations, listens/explains well, is sensitive in delivering news that will require a change in plan, and has multiple suggestions for changes so there are informed choices. He and his crew clean up at the end of each day, and were all pleasant to be around. I have two dogs and was able to work out a plan to keep the dogs calm and out of the way; it helped that the crew are dog-friendly. I am in the planning stages of the next project I'd like to propose to Mike.

Enrique just finished a large tile and slate job for us. The floors included three large rooms where the pinwheel slate pattern had to visually flow seamlessly between rooms and then up two walls all the way to the ceiling. The bathroom floor slopes to a linear drain. Enrique waterproofed the walls and floor and got our shower pan inspection passed by the city inspectors. The design required tile adjacent to millwork, a tub deck, a shower bench, a shampoo niche, inset mirrors, and window and door surrounds. Every minute detail is magnificent. The project posed every advanced design challenge and Enrique of Horizon Tile accomplished them with masterful skill. His suggestions made the project even more beautiful than we could have envisioned. The project was finished on time and on budget. I wish I could post some photos here for you to see. Beautiful work!

Oliver recently installed porcelain tile in two of our bathrooms and I can't recommend him more strongly. Oliver's quote was very reasonable and I found him to be great to work with. Most importantly, Oliver's work was of very high quality (flat tiles, clean grout lines) and Oliver is extremely honest (he'll indicate when he doesn't know something/or isn't best suited). He has a customer-first attitude and did a few things that weren't explicitly in the contract just to make sure we were completely satisfied with the results.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

      • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
        • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
