Unstoppable Handyman Services was the first to bid on my small home project of installing an in-wall doggy door, and was also the lowest bid. Their communication was regular and excellent. I never had to wait any significant amount of time for a reply before the job started. John (who is the main service person and co-owner) showed up EXACTLY on time, giving me a 30-minute courtesy call before arriving. It took about 5 minutes to look over the job parameters, and then he was immediately immersed in getting the job done with care and quality. He had all the tools needed to fit my Endura aluminum doggy door with double flaps into the wall, cutting out both drywall and stucco to make it happen. When he was done, there was no patchwork to be done....his expert skills resulted in a doggy door that looked perfect, straight, functional, with no damage to walls. He was friendly, informative, and cleaned up the worksite both inside and out. I was able to make the service appointment 24 hours ahead of time (even though they were very busy that week), and John came out at 6:30 pm on a Friday evening to complete the job! You can bet I will be keeping his business card for future projects! Thank you John, and your brother (other co-owner) for running a reliable, economic, and professional service

We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

Shay is very knowledgable regarding the care of tile, grout. She will be coming back to finish this bathroom and then my kitchen. Evidently, the contractors I used never sealed these two tile areas.

I have a few rental houses, I can always depend on David to give me quality work and a fair price. What I appreciate most is his diversity, it is rare to find an individual that I would trust in my personal home as well as my rentals. I need to rely on someone who can do many things, electrical, plumbing, drywall, building decks, & roofing you name it he can do it. I've had a working relationship with David for over 20 years. He does a great job! I've posted a large tile job he did for me a few years back and it still is in Great shape. David laid a wood floor in my home as well. I've received many compliments on how beautiful it is. Strongly recommend him!

Dennis is great! I hired him to install some tile in our kitchen where a previous homeowner had removed the backsplash to put in a window, but never finished the job. He was quick to respond, gave a reasonable quote, gave me some suggestions about where to look for tile to match the rest of the kitchen, and even tried to find the tile himself. Once I found/ordered the tile, he made himself available on a Saturday to install it. He showed up on time, did an excellent job, finished in just a few hours, and cleaned up afterward. I hope to use him again when we remodel our bathroom.

I am so glad Alex worked with us to bring my brick backsplash idea to life! He was very informative and provided valuable information that helped me with picking the right brick, the right grout color, and even the right spacing between the grout! I sent numerous pictures and he made sure that I was pleased with his work. He is very professional and knowledgeable! He really knows his craft. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that needs tile work! Thank You Alex!

After arriving at a fair price Patrick and his assistant began work the following day. They attired as promised and completed the work on time. The atrium that was tiled required a great deal of prep for proper drainage and a level surface. I don't believe a less experienced team could have done the job properly. They kept their work area clean and orderly thru out. All of the furniture was put back in its place. I would recommend them happily and will use them again in the future.

Dario tiled our fireplace and added shelves to it for us. We are so happy with his work! What impressed me most about Dario is that he really listened to what we wanted and was able to translate our vision into a quality finished product. His work was timely and professional - he knows what he’s doing and works to serve his customers. We heartily recommend Dario’s services and will hire him again if we need tiling services.

Freedom Renovation finished our kitchen remodel about 4 weeks ago and we LOVE it! We found them through door hanger. We live in La Jolla area, so we drove up north and stopped by their showroom, met Anna and set up an appointment. Alex and Anna arrived on time 2 days later and really listened to what we wanted, while other contractors did not. A day or two later we got an email with our initial estimate and a 3-D picture of expected result. A few adjustments needed to be made, so we called in with Alex to discuss about it in further detail. Alex and Allen were also super nice and willing to work with us to reduce the cost. We talked for a few days, and finally made our decision to go with them because they appeared down to earth and reliable. The first 2 days guys showed up to demo the kitchen, tile floor and the soffit. By the end of day 2 demo was done, half the drywall was in and 1/4 of the tile floor was laid. By day 6, all the tile was in, drywall and mud was done! These guys work hard and fast and their work is top quality. We chose their cheapest cabinets which is real wood front and compressed engineering wood side, very sturdy and built to last. We were quoted a 5-week time line and they finished in 4 weeks - Alex the project manager was terrific and always available. The tile looks so good. Their work ethic and quality are solid and I would be happy to work with them again.

Georgino and his crew are incredibly talented. From a design perspective I had no idea what to do with either of my bathrooms and Georgino helped me find something that was both modern and timeless. The quality of the work he did is impeccable—projects were completed on time if not ahead of schedule and have not had any issues with either bathroom. Very professional, clean, did not leave any debris throughout the course of either project. Highly recommend him for any indoor or outdoor Stone/tile work.

It was obvious that Joe Depaz takes pride in his work from the attention to detail he gave in doing even this relatively small job. He was quick to return my phone calls, answer questions, and got the job done in the time frame I needed. I'm impressed with the quality of his work and would definitely recommend him for any tile jobs.

Marcial was wonderful to work with. He was always on time and the job came out better than I expected. He was flexible with our schedule and even came back to finish the project a day later than expected due to my error; not his. He worked neat and cleaned up after the job was complete. Overall, a wonderful experience (both price wise and job turnout). I recommend him 100%

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

        • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
          • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
        • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
        • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
