Brian M. says, "We hired Promus for a custom (trapezoidal motorized [solar powered]) blind install. We have a unique situation; we have a wall full of windows – 11 total. The windows are large, tall (the tallest at 21’), and six are trapezoidal. They came a performed the pre-installation measure and then later returned to install. The pre-installation measure went flawless. During the install, we had some issues. You see, our windows ever so slightly bowed inward in the middle. My guess some it is from the drywall mud and tape during initial home construction. So, the blind slight rubbed and got hung up upon lowering. The Promus team went above and beyond the call of duty to slightly alter the blinds in order for them to fit windows and work properly. They are truly worthy of a 5 star rating and I would, without hesitant, hire again."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Some of the biggest benefits of caulking include the following:

  • Prevents water damage. Properly applied caulk creates a waterproof seal around sinks, tubs, and windows. This can stop moisture from seeping into your walls and causing rot or mold.

  • Improves energy efficiency. Sealing cracks and gaps around windows and doors can prevent air leaks, which helps keep your home comfortable and may lower your heating and cooling bills.

  • Keeps out pests. Caulking can block the small openings that insects, spiders, and other pests use to get into your home from the outside.

  • Creates a finished look. A clean line of caulk gives baseboards, trim, and countertops a professional, polished appearance by covering unsightly gaps and cracks.

  • Reduces dust and allergens. By sealing exterior gaps, caulk can help block dust, pollen, and other outdoor allergens from getting inside, which may improve your home’s air quality.

The main difference is elasticity. Caulk is fairly rigid and best for filling gaps in areas with little to no movement, like around trim. Sealants are more flexible, so sealant application helps where joints expand and contract, such as those found around windows or in bathrooms.

Caulking can be a DIY-friendly project, but consider the benefits of hiring a pro. For example:

  • Experienced pros know how to properly remove old caulk and prepare the surface, which is essential for a strong, lasting bond.

  • Pros typically know which type of caulk to use for different areas, ensuring it holds up against moisture, temperature changes, or movement.

  • Their experience and specialized tools allow them to apply a clean, smooth bead for a polished look that's hard to achieve on your own.

  • A professional job often creates a more durable, waterproof, and airtight seal that prevents leaks and drafts more effectively.

  • They can typically get the job done more quickly and efficiently, saving you the time and potential mess of a DIY project.

It’s recommended that you inspect and replace your caulking at least every five years. Over time, caulk can crack, shrink, or peel away from surfaces. This can lead to water damage, air leaks, and even pest infestations if it’s not maintained.

Some good questions to ask before you hire a caulking professional are:

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • What type of caulk do you recommend for my project and why?

  • Does your estimate include removing the old caulk and cleaning the surface?

  • How long will the job take, and what’s the required drying or curing time?

  • Can you provide a detailed, written estimate that breaks down all costs?

  • Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your work?

  • What do I need to do to prepare the area, and will you handle the cleanup?

It's useful to take the following steps before your pro arrives to perform caulking:Step 1: Clear the work area. Remove any furniture, decor, or personal items from the space where the caulking will be applied. This gives your pro easy access to tubs, sinks, windows, or baseboards.Step 2: Clean the surfaces. Wipe down the areas to be caulked to get rid of any dirt, soap scum, or grime. A clean, dry surface helps the new caulk adhere properly and last longer.Step 3: Point out the exact spots. Use painter's tape or sticky notes to mark all the cracks and gaps you want fixed. This ensures you and your pro are on the same page and nothing gets missed.Step 4: Provide adequate ventilation. Open a window or turn on a fan in the room where the work will be done. Good airflow is important for managing any fumes from the caulk as it's applied.Step 5: Secure pets and children. For their safety and to avoid any disruptions, keep pets and small children out of the work area. This allows your pro to focus on the job without any interruptions.
