The catering staff was amazing and polite. We got one chef, one assistant, one server and one DJ. They arrived on time. Server helped us set up and clean up everything. DJ was great! They did a wonderful job! Price is very reasonable and acceptable. Paid them with extra tips when service is finished. Love the team! Recommend for any events!

From the quote process all the way through to catering our company picnic, Pam with The Pit Stop BBQ was outstanding. She was excellent in answering all of our questions, arrived on time, cooked AMAZING BBQ, and served all of our guests with a smile on her face. We couldn't have been more pleased with The Pit Stop BBQ and we will definitely be using their services again. I couldn't say enough positive things about their catering services and the food they cooked. The pig candy was my favorite and the ribs were cooked to perfection. Don't hesitate - they're awesome!

I contacted Ana to cater a resident event at the apartment community I manage (The Madrid Apartment Homes, Los Angeles). It was a holiday event and therefore our catering included buffett service for 2 hours of turkey, ham, her amazing mashed potatoes, stuffing, grilled veggies, gravy and dinner rolls. She also included amazing gourmet cupcakes! What impressed me about Ana is that she was extremely friendly and helpful, she did whatever she could do to help us make sure our event went on without a hitch, including making sure we got a bottle opener when we forgot one. She was on time and the quality of her food was outstanding! Everything was fresh and even better quality than what you would find at a restaurant. Her customer service was amazing, even when residents straggled in late and she had already begun to pack up, without hesitation she unpacked the food and served them right away. I could not be more happy with the service Ana provided and I look forward to calling her for our next event!

My experience with Alexis and So Divine was nothing short of DIVINE! She swept right into my last minute event and coordinated all the pieces efficiently, showed up early the day of with friendly staff, set up a beautiful display that had DELICIOUS food! My entire company has been talking about it since our Monday event--and have requested her to return for other events. We already have her booked for January. Alexis is an exemplary business woman that follows up, follows through and has amazing tasting food! Plus she brings ziplock bags and plastic so that her staff can make to go plates for people. Our entire staff was happy--and she made me look amazing. I highly recommend So Divine Catering for your event needs--especially if you like flavorful food with a smile.

KMR provided Cuban style appetizers for a Latin music concert. This was a charity event, and they helped subsidize a significant portion of the cost. Their staff delivered the food and were accommodating enough to help set up at the church, and also offered to stay and help serve. Please thank their representative and give her my gratitude. The food was excellent. I gave them an acknowledgement in the concert program. Several people asked me how to reach your organization in the future to buy some of your food. I listed their website in the program. I thank KMR for donating their portion of the food.

Food First Events & Catering Co. recently did two events for my company and the feedback was amazing! The food was stepped up in such a way that the impact was noticeable. The breakfast spreads that were delivered on time and set up impeccably were delicious with a few notable homemade pastry items that left people talking! I experienced nothing but professionalism, reliability and class from this experience. Also, working with David to make sure I met my budget was extremely easy and he was eager to help meet my needs without compromising quality. I highly recommend!

Work quality - phenomenal Professionalism - fantastic Responsiveness - Joanna couldn't have been more responsive if she tried. Value- heck yes! Do you know how pricey mobile bartending and catering vendors can be in LA? This company is a steal considering the amount of collaboration and quality of service your receive. Punctuality - On time, super fast in setting up, even faster tearing down. I highly recommend this vendor. I planned an entire event from another state and Joanna made me feel like I had nothing to worry about on her end. Will work with her again for sure.

Carolyn is so easy to work with. Planning parties, family gatherings, and/or holiday festivities can be very stressful, and that’s when you need someone like Carolyn to help you. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her for many parties and her catering have not disappointed me yet. The only reason I didn’t rank her perfect is because I’ve yet tasted all of her specialities. Best of luck Chef LaTay. Valerie

Throughout the catering process, Tanesha was very responsive and professional. Her food were good, however some of the hot entree were less flavor but her appetizer were very good. The size and portion of the food were in the smaller portion, thus I will definitely order more headcounts to compensate the quantity in the future. We actually running out on the hot entree. The presentation of her food were very elegant and delicate that she took a lot of time to prepare for the amount that she charges us. Just a note though, although she did some communicating with me in regards on running behind schedule, it just get me nervous and stress as she didn't arrive on time due to traffic. Luckily, most of the guest are close friends and they sort of understand. I will still give her another try for future events as her food quality is good.

Wendell catered a private event, for a group of all vegan / plant based guests. The food was phenomenal and some of the best plant based food I've had. There was a large variety of flavors and dishes - greens, tempeh, tofu, seitan, tons of veggies, quinoa and more. The variety of food was so good, I am looking to bring him as a private chef for a series of wellness retreats.

Heather is dedicated to her new one woman catering business! She had catered a friends party with appetizers and it was a great success; we loved her food and would recommend her to others! She came by my house with samples and we went over the menus. It’s nice to work with someone one on one you know. p.s. I really recommend her Savory Artichoke Heart Caramelized Onion Italian Cheese Quiche!

I have had amazing experiences with Andrea and her team. I started to hire her about 3 years ago to cater to birthday parties and haven’t hired anyone else since. She’s also brought new twists to our parties with Hungarian dishes. I can’t wait to keep working with her and her team.

I hired chef Saeed to cater a private dinner party for my parents 50th anniversary. I requested a Persian menu and the food he prepared was. outstanding. I cannot say enough about chef Saeed. His personality and his passion for cooking speaks for itself. My parents said it was one of the best meals they have ever had. I cannot wait to hire him again for one of our parties and I highly recommend anybody looking for a caterer to hire a chef Saeed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
