Refrigerator/Freezer not working. Mina discovered the prob: mother board and connector to fridge electronics. Very smart, efficient, speaks many languages. Only minor drawback: wished he had discussed billing with us. Price was okay.

Nick is excellent. His pricing is fair and he came prepared to fix our freezer immediately. He even cleaned a few parts in the back for no additinal cost just to be sure our freezer ran perfect. I appreciate the way he checked everything thoroughly before diagnosing the problem. Our freezer works perfect now. His work is worth every penny!

It was a pleasure working with Arnel. He was very professional and knowledgable. He arrived on time and fixed our leaking freezer/refrigerator in about 30 minutes, His price was quite reasonable compared to other appliance repairs we have had done in the past. We would definitely use his services again.

I called Andy on a Friday afternoon when we discovered everything in the freezer compartment of our refrigerator was thawed. I love that he uses technology to his advantage. He was very responsive, and even showed up late on a Friday night to take care of things for us. He took care of everything quickly and the price was right. He even spent some time suggesting ways to keep our dishwasher and washing machine in top working condition. I will definitely be calling Andy in the future.

Phil was recommended by a family friend. I called him for help my when husband and I came home from vacation to find our fridge on the fritz. Everything in the fridge was not very cool and the stuff in the freezer not frozen. Liquid ice cream - yuck! Phil called me back promptly and asked me questions to help diagnose the problem. When he came out to look at the fridge he was able to confirm the problem was fixable but shared because the particular replacement part (compressor) was expensive it wouldnt be worth it. Phil recommended a few options on refridgerator brands and stores. At the end of the day we saved hundreds because of Phil’s advice. About a year and a half we hired him to fix our washer. So glad we did. I would recommend Phil to anyone who wants to hire a very honest, hardworking, professional person.

We were having an issue with our Viking Refrigerator. The tech they sent, Brad, was fantastic. He was early to both appointments and efficient. He had excellent knowledge of the refrigerator/freezer. I felt very confident having him service our appliance. I have not always had such good luck. Brad was great and I'd highly recommend him.

This was the third place I called to have our expensive Samsung bottom drawer freezer fixed (as it wouldn't stay frozen). The first two told me nothing was wrong with it and that I had the temperature set too high - without ever taking any tools out or doing anything other than feeling the inside with a hand. The highest it may have been set was 8 degrees and nothing would stay frozen. I'm no engineer, but I know when something isn't frozen. Eric who took my call was very friendly and set up an appt for a technician to come out between 12-2. He called 30 minutes before he arrived. I think his name was Nick. He immediately pulled the fridge out and took the back panel off and unloaded the freezer to take the inside panel off. He diagnosed it within about 20 minutes, but the part he needed was at the shop. He said he would try to come back that afternoon or the next day after his other appts. He even helped me carry the food out to our garage freezer. He came back around 4:30 and had it fixed and did routine maintenance on it as well as our second fridge in the garage within 45-60 minutes. It has been 4 days and our freezer is actually keeping food frozen. What a concept! It was ridiculously expensive to fix, but I think that's par for the course with these things. It was still about $300 less than the first guy estimated, so I don't feel too bad paying it.

Paul is a great repairman! Quickly replaced new garbage disposal and fan in back of freezer. Also, got on the phone to complete a credit card transaction with the landlord. I will recommend him to friends & family.

Omar was very reasonably priced, on time, got the work done as schedule. His work was perfect and our freezer is working properly now. Omar also fixed a minor repair on our dishwasher that we thought was going to cost a lot of money, but not with Omar around. He is a very pleasant man and we enjoyed his company as well. Definitely will hire again.

We have a Sub Zero Refrigerator/Freezer and the ice maker died and the line to the ice maker leaked into freezer insulation which froze. This caused condensation on side wall which leaked on hardwood floor. What a mess. We tried to call Sub Zero and they said they could have somebody out to our house in a few weeks. Totally unacceptable! So we called up Los Angeles Appliance Repair. We have used them several times in the past and always been happy with the results. They sent out a tech 2 days later and he said that the hose going to the ice maker was loose and the water was running into the freezer insulation. He had to defrost the entire unit. Move the unit out to clean up the water and dry the wood, fix the water hose and clean everything up. It was a pretty big job, and I was surprised when he was finished at how reasonable the bill was. Los Angeles Appliance Repair is a really great repair company. Their technicians are honest and friendly, and they never over charge you or try to talk you into repairs you do not need.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
