Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

How much does computer repair cost per hour?

It costs an average of $60 per hour for computer repair. Hourly rates range from $45-$50 on the low end and $85-$90 on the high end.

Get free cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you so you’ll know exactly how much you should expect to pay.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

My computer was shutting down after a few minutes. I signed on to thumbtack and he sent me a quote within minutes and then wrote me once he noticed I saw it. Even though he works full time he was able to take care of my computer and even give my computer extras that I didn't request but was definitely grateful for. I recommend him to anyone who needs a computer repaired.

Of four estimates, Derrell's was most logical. He immediately followed up his quote with a concise email and phone call. I liked his Web Site and You Tube video. He inspected laptop (notebook) computer at his business workshop, and a DC output jack was ordered. During the two week repair process, I received timely updated status by email and telephone. Repair part did not resolve a shorted (no power) motherboard, and I decided to not repair this computer. He is professional, and I would not hesitate to use his services again.

I was very impressed with Derrell and his service. He quickly responded by text message to my request for repairing the "black screen syndrome" on my Macbook Pro. He let me know when he could start the work (same day), when the work would be finished ("probably within 24 hrs, 48 hrs max"), quoted a fixed price of $70 plus parts (none were needed), took delivery of my computer with no down payment, and said if he couldn't fix it, there would be no charge. He completed the repair that night, he clearly explained what he did to repair it, and I picked up my computer the next morning. He runs his business out of his home's well organized garage, he is a very polite, professional young man, and he clearly enjoys what he does. I highly recommend Derrell's Computer Repairs.

My HP600 desktop computer experienced a major "meltdown" (the screen kept flashing from black to green ad nauseam). I had to take the device to Geek Squad for major repairs - it took them 10 days plus a factory re-set to finally fix it! Upon bringing it home, I couldn't figure out how to re-connect all of the cables - my countertop was a "snake pit" of wires and cords! I twice requested in-house visits by Geek Squad to get "the beast" breathing again...and twice Geek Squad screwed up on arrival times. At that point, I went to "Thumbtack" (first time user). I scrolled thru the computer techs, and was very impressed with what I read about McKenna & Associates...and so I made a "connection." Warren McKenna arrived on time, was very professional, got the computer all hooked up, restored all of my programs + backed up files, got the printer/computer connection functioning and answered all of my questions. I should add that I screwed up on his first visit. He arrived all ready to get to work...but we (...he) discovered that my HP electrical cord/box was missing - I had left it at work! Warren was very gracious and didn't charge me anything despite the fact that, due to MY carelessness, I had wasted his time and his trip to my home (I did pay him $10 for gas...but he never requested that). McKenna & Associates will, from this day forward, be my sole provider for all of my computer and tech-related needs. I should add, by the way, that his pricing is extremely reasonable! I highly recommend him!!!

When asked what you liked about working with SD Computer Specialists you could only select three of the five options, but it should be all five which would include value & punctuality. Gabriel responded within minutes after selected by Thumbtack as a technician. He arrived at the scheduled time, listened carefully to the problems I was having, & quickly went about fixing the ones he could on site. I was told by one tech that because of my Internet problem, I needed an extender, & after two hours he couldn’t get it to work. Gabriel solved the problem in five minutes by resetting the router; increasing the internet speed; & recommended returning the extender. Gabriel solved other problems I was having with a iPad, & printers. He took an old Dell tower to his shop to determine the feasibility of repairing it, & after we agreed on a price, made arrangements to get my laptop on an upcoming weekday, do the repairs, & return it the next morning. Gabriel is professional, personable, & worth every minute reflected on his invoice.
