Kevin was on time, pleasant and professional. He did a great job cleaning my sectional sofa, chair and area rugs; they look cleaner and brighter and have no pet odor. The area rugs lie on hardwood floors and Kevin was careful to prevent any fluid from getting on the wood floors. He's the sole owner and operator of the business, and I appreciate that he did not attempt to up-sell additional products or services to me, which some of the larger services tend to do. I will definitely hire Kevin again.

Amin showed up exactly on time and he worked on a wide variety of projects are around my house. He was very respectful of my floors and carpet and he cleaned up after himself. We ran out of time (too many projects to tackle at one time) so I am planning on having him back soon to finish off my "honey do list". I would definitely recommend him to friends and will be using him again in the future.

Robin built us a door/wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. It took 3.5 days (including the necessary drying time). We were impressed by the quality of his framing. He had great judgement about where to place the door. He relocated the recessed lights in order to center them in the newly created hallway. Robin made sure that the molding, wall texture, door and door knobs would match our existing stuff. I cannot wait to hire Robin back to replace our carpets with hardwood flooring.

Extremely happy that we hired Daniel to install our laminate floors! His team was hardworking, honest, and quick. We had new floors installed throughout our entire home with new baseboards, and I couldn’t be happier with the finished product. Would highly recommend Daniel and his team. Beyond the great quality of work they provided, they are extremely fair with their installation pricing. Thank you so much!

We had a small bathroom renovation planned. We requested 2 bids from contractors in the Thumbtack network: Top Knotch and another contractor. Both contractors bid very competitively. (We’d had prior bids from other contractors – not from Thumbtack - at 3 to 5 times the price.) Though Top Knotch was not the lowest bidder of the 2 Thumbtack contractors, we selected this company because they had a variety of skillsets that other contractor did not. In addition to the tile work, they moved a bathroom light, installed an exhaust fan, installed a medicine cabinet, repaired some drywall, could remove and replace the toilet, etc. We have a 1930’s home with hanky wiring and unsquared walls and unleveled floors. Mike was meticulous in his work and was able to overcome the unique challenges of this home. The mosaic rock backsplash (floor to ceiling) and the porcelain wood-look floor tile is beautiful. Mike and his assistant were always on time and worked a full day, every day until the project was completed. We were impressed that in this day of technology and constantly being “plugged in” to the world by cell phone, he didn’t drop everything to answer the phone every time it rang. His time in our home was spent on our project. Mike is very professional and meticulous in his work product. We’d use this company again and have plans to use him for our upcoming kitchen remodel. We’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for quality work at a reasonable price. Rodney R.

Mike was very professional and prompt from the get go when we were searching for someone to refinish our hardwood floors. He came out on a Sunday for an estimate and was able to finish the entire job by the end of the week! Also, there was minor damage to our wall due to the refinishing. After notifying Mike, he personally came to patch up the damage. You can expect A+ work along with great customer service from Mike. He is highly recommended!

I have known Mike Martin for over 20 years and he is very hard working, always punctual, reliable, organized and efficient! A few years ago he did a wonderful job removing carpet from my living room, hallway and stairs and replaced with new hardwood, blending and refinishing with my existing kitchen hardwood. The floors turned out amazing! Mike has many years experience in refinishing and installing hardwood floors. I would definitely recommend Mike for your handy man needs! Sincerely, Georgia Hallett

Antonio and his team did an outstanding job. They really went above and beyond to ensure we were happy with their work. Very honest, punctual, polite, and most of all they are good at what they do. Concrete floors can be a challenge to work with, so it's important to find a team who is well versed in the trade. I would definitely hire them again if another job comes up in the future.

Steve responded quickly to my inquiry regarding putting in a wall mounted dog door. He arrived on the designated day and time; even arriving a few minutes early. He professionally went to work installing my very expensive “Hale” dog door. He protected my kitchen nook floor and outside area where work was to done. His attention to detail and cleanup was great. The dog door needed to be placed under a window, and he was able, with confidence, adjust electrical wires in order to accommodate the door. He is very friendly and his price for this project was very reasonable. I will definitely use him again for other projects that I need done. I am very happy with his work. My photo of this door came out horizontal, instead of vertical, but hopefully it shows how well Steve installed my double wall Hale dog door.

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

Scott and Victor were great to work with. We hired them to replace our first floor tile, baseboards, and paint half the interior walls. They also fixed an unexpected water leak during the tile project. Towards the end of the tile project, we decided to have them replace our patio deck and build a vegetable garden box. They were responsive, polite, showed up everyday, addressed every question and request we had. We will definitely hire them again for future projects, since they pretty much do everything.

HIGHLY recommend! Edwin and his team were RELIABLE, professional, honest and very hardworking. They painted my 3b/3ba home from top to bottom. He completed it all and applied the new baseboards with quick turn around. He was reasonably priced compared to several other quotes that I got. He also helped with some minor handyman work. I would most definitely hire him to paint again. He was wonderful to work with!!

Sid does amazing work. He is very attentioned to detail and collaborated well with me whenever there was a discrepancy in my apartment since it was so old. He did my bathroom floors and even though I was happy with both of them, he felt he could have done better on the grout work and offered to re-do it for free. I’ll use him for future projects no doubt, but he was a bit pricey for me. Regardless, you’ll get your money’s worth.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
