Milko was wonderful, professional and detail oriented. In fact, he was the very first person to respond to my post and within a couple of hours, at my door to give an estimate. And even though the job ended up taking an extra three hours of his time, he stuck to the original estimate which is a sign of professionalism and someone I’d hire again and again. Highly recommend Milko Yong!

Fred did a great job, squeezing three projects into one day. (A closet install, door lock change, and a kitchen faucet install). Managed to troubleshoot some slightly unusual situations with creative solutions. There was a glitch in the faucet install, and Fred returned promptly to repair at no charge (even though it was likely due to the age of plumbing and not anything he missed).

I recently hired Jasper for a kitchen cabinet job that involved installing new hardware and hinges on all of my kitchen cabinet doors (as well as some touch-up work on the doors, themselves) and then installing/hanging them. He also installed a new surface for the under-sink cabinet. I would definitely hire Jasper again. Top notch, quality work, reasonable rates and he's a super nice guy on top of that. Definitely recommend.

My garage door track got wrecked by car. Ace was the only shop that was able to replace the track for me on the same day so I don't have to leave the garage door open for the night!

Smooth process. One day total from submission of job request through to installation of garage door opener. I wish all jobs I needed done were that easy. Ben was the service technician that showed up. Talked me through the issue I thought my garage door had and explained it was actually do to the slight sloping of my floor. He said he could account for it when he installed the opener, so it didn't really need a tune-up or anything. Explained to me the various garage door options I had to choose from and the flat rate installation fee. Ben steered me away from unnecessary power and upgraded me to the belt drive for no added cost. I knew I wanted the belt drive for the quieter operation, so I was glad this was already priced in. He said he needed a little more than an hour to get the job done. After a little more than an hour I came out and he had just completed. Showed me the operation of the equipment, configured the homelink system pre-installed in my car, and walked me through the paperwork. The 10 year warranty helps put minds at rest and the system is clearly a cut above the off the shelf units available at the local home depot center. Glad I went with professionals to get the job done...and I know my wife will be happy I made that choice too!

Our garage door is 67 years old and one of the support arms broke in half. I was worried that the repair would not be possible and I would be looking at a complete replacement due to age. Mike discussed all the possible repair options with me. Precision was amazing and was able to update the old hardware, install a new door opener, and the original door is still in use. . . Totally AWESOME! Cory is extremely knowledgeable and answered all my questions regarding door opener types and door opener failures. He also answered all my questions regarding reliability and warranty. Should I have another garage door problem or failure I will definitely use Precision Overhead Garage Door Service.

Garage door motor was not opening my garage door. The Vulcan Technician showed up a little early, was very polite and professional. He did a full inspection of the door and found out my spring was broke. Turns out, we have 4 springs. We replaced them all and also the rollers. The motor was fine. My garage door never ran so quietly and I can actually lift it myself now. Great job, Vulcan.

Melvin is a licensed and experienced installer of garage door opening systems. He put in a LiftMaster with Wifi, replacing our 25 year old Genie system. He showed up early and worked for two hours. He took our old unit away. And he left his business card near the button so that if there is any problem we can call him. His price was 150 to 200 dollars less than his competitors for the same unit. And he's really nice. We are glad to give him our business.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

    • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
      • Without insulation: about $900
    • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700

    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
      • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
