My 3rd grader enjoyed John's approach, she was happy that he actually helped her to learn some new concepts in the very first visit (abstract nouns - hope, wisdom, joy - "something you cannot put into the box and sell", as John puts it:)! We just started the lessons, so more updates to come. Also, I liked that he came with a work book right away - so I did not have to worry that we have no material to work with.

John Bertinetti helped me study for the GMAT exam over the summer of 2017 with concentrated sessions to review GMAT Quant. John got me started on a study path by sharing info about the best study resources for my problem areas, and would meet with me once or twice a week to go over key Quant problems that I needed help solving. John is an ideal tutor for students who are good at keeping themselves on track without a structured curriculum. Great value, flexible scheduling, and clear explanations of problems are all huge wins with him. About halfway through the summer, I realized that I needed a structured class and more discipline to keep myself on schedule, so I supplemented my study sessions with John with an independent online class with a live teacher. Key lessons w/John: John is all about understanding the concepts behind a problem before sharing tricks; his method is great for learners like me who need to understand the math conceptually and don't want to just memorize formulas. We did a lot of work on combinatorics and probability, which were my challenge areas. He was a great and affordable supplemental resource for me beyond the class. Results: I went from a 580 on my Manhattan GMAT diagnostic to a 730 score on the actual GMAT after 3 months of light study followed by 2 months of intense study.

I have been taking lessons from Nando for over a year now and really love the flexibility his lessons provide. He is so willing to help accommodate your schedule. His lessons are a good reminder to keep up with my learning and speaking Spanish. Since I only take 1 lesson a week, I have to do additional learning on my own (which everyone should do anyway) but I like the lessons so much that I just renewed!

Bruno is a one on one tutor for pre-calculus for my junior in high school. His knowledge of the subject and his ability to share it with my daughter are exceptional. My daughter's class is struggling to learn the basics so Bruno is basically teaching my daughter the new concepts. She is able to understand it and complete all her homework after her time with Bruno. She also felt confident taking her first quiz after her tutoring sessions.

Minok is an excellent math tutor for my daughter. Beginning of the school year my daughter has had some difficulties with her trig-algebra 2 class. She would like to improve her grade and prepare for finals. Minok came in fully prepared. I really appreciate that she genuinely cares about the student and she spent a lot of time preparing her class ahead of the time. Usually she will check with my daughter with what is on going in her class, and by time of tutoring she came with extra materials and practice to help the kids. By doing tutorial with her once a week, She was able to help my daughter improve her grade from B to an A and so far in the new trimester my daughter has been getting all As in her math test. We are very happy with her and will highly recommend her to all my friends.

Every class I took with Dan Wekselgreene was comprehensive. Mr. Wekselgreene did an excellent job with his lesson plans and made sure all students understood the material. All his class work and home work was designed by him which makes it even better. His math lessons were clear, thoroughly, and fun. Also, he was responsive of his students. Always available to meet with them during, before, and after school. He is a teacher committed to his work and students. More than a math teacher he was a great mentor and advisor. Mr. Wekselgreene is a positive, patient, and compassionate man. I saw him face teenage negativity with a smile and hope. He is a great role model and a hardworking math teacher. I can say with confidence that anyone that comes across Mr. Wekselgreene will be lucky to have him as a teacher, mentor, and/or advisor.

I had the privilege of being taught English by Leigh for a period of nine months (back in 2011 when I was studying abroad in San Francisco). I can honestly say that Leigh is the best teacher I’ve ever had (and I’ve had lots of great teachers, so that is really saying something). She is sweet, loving, understanding, patient and extremely passionate about her job. She cares for each and every one of her students, and is always willing to go the extra mile to help them, especially those struggling to keep up. Even outside the classroom can students always count on her support. Leigh is also a very enthusiastic and creative person, which is reflected in her teaching style. Her lessons are fun and engaging, also for those who are not naturally crazy about academics, as Leigh always finds a way to encourage and motivate her students (be it by having a meaningful one-on-one conversation with them or by switching up her lesson plan). Furthermore, Leigh not only distinguishes herself from the average teacher by her natural teaching ability, but also by her invaluable experience as an international language school teacher.

I can’t say thank you enough to Kisha and the staff at Moore 4 Moore Tutoring. Since middle school I’ve struggled to fully grasp the concept of math. Initially I was embarrassed admitting that I needed a tutor, however, I can proudly say that M4M has continued to help me throughout high school and college career. I don’t know where I’d be without them!

Sylvia is tutoring my daughters in Spanish. They never had Spanish before, and when they moved to a new school, the level of Spanish is very advance for someone who never had the lessons. Sylvia works with them in getting them up to speed. In a short time, both my children had become comfortable in following the lesson at school, and I have noticed that both of them have made quite significant improvements. My oldest daughter tells me that once she is comfortable with her Spanish, she wants to start French with Sylvia. I am sure that if either of my kids need tutoring in Math, Sylvia would be the one we go to. If your child or children need extra help in academic, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you call Sylvia. My children are very happy with how she teaches. Sylvia is also opens to different approaches in teaching. If my kids want more challenge, all they have to do is tell Sylvia and she will give them challenging lessons.

My son Tristan has always had a little bit of trouble adjusting to the learning pace in a classroom environment, but he is more than able to excel above and beyond what is expected of his age group. We signed up for AP calc last year and had a lot of trouble in our first couple months. Tristan began falling behind and dropping down in test scores because he was unable to grasp the methods that the teacher divulged in the short 50 minutes that were allotted for the advanced course. We signed Tristan up in the academic resource center at school with a classmate tutor, but his peers could only reiterate what they had learned from the same set of teachers. When he told me he wanted to drop down to the pre-calc class, which is considered the “standard” level for seniors, I realized we had to get serious about devoting some time outside of PALY to get him the help he really needed. He only wanted the AP course on his transcript if it made him more appealing to colleges, and not if it were simply going to weigh down his GPA. We found Misha online, and things started getting easier after Tristan’s first session. He noted that Misha was able to teach him the same problems with a completely different approach that seemed to just click for him. I was worried that this was going to be a problem with testing because teachers like to see a certain type of work on the paper that corresponds to what is taught in the classroom; the standardized way to solve an equation. I brought this up with Misha and he was very receptive to my concerns. He took the time to explain to my why Tristan benefitted from the style of solving that he was teaching him, which is something that no teacher has taken the time to do with me before. Every kid’s mind works differently, and therefore some concepts that are received well by one student, may be very difficult to grasp for another. There are different ways to visualize problems and Misha was teaching a personalized curriculum to each of his clients; something else that teachers with 30 students don’t seem to be doing. I still wanted Tristan to be able to work the problem in the way that his textbook described, so Misha assured me that he would be able to get there with Tristan. Tristan used the methods that Misha was teaching to conceptually understand the math that he was learning. Misha also taught him how to apply that method that they worked on to what his teacher was using with all of the students. This is really what helped Tristan to keep up in class, and brought value to the time that he spent there as well, instead of just wasting time, confused, until he could get the one-on-one attention that he needed. Tristan can now look at an equation both ways, and choose which path is the most relevant to solve the problem with. This really gave him confidence and the actual drive to sit down and go through with a difficult problem, start to finish; a place I never thought we could reach at the beginning of the year. I cannot say enough positive praise about Misha. He has worked my son through the most difficult points of his education, and doesn’t leave without giving me a snapshot of their progress for the day. Tristan also really seemed to look up to Misha and turned to him for help with college applications, which he was more than happy to help out with. Tristan is off at Santa Clara now, and told me that he still reaches out to Misha when is he is stuck on a problem!! I have Misha’s personal number, and so does Tristan… that’s just the type of tutor he is. Needless to say, I will be sending this tutor a little something extra for Christmas this year.

Darya tutored and advised me throughout my senior year of high school and my first year at college. Having Darya by my side throughout the stress of a year and a half journey has had a significant impact in my life. Although Darya's main responsibility was to tutor me for my Advanced Placement (AP) Literature class, she went above and beyond to what I expected of an English tutor. She helped me find my inner voice as a writer through tutoring me about grammar, organization, and vocabulary. She also helped boost my confidence as an underprivileged Latina studying in the STEM field as a computer science major at the University of California: Santa Cruz. I passed both my AP Government and AP Literature classes and tests which is significant because both required a heavy amount of analytical writing; I graduated high school with honors and with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA), 3.7, at any time of my academic career. One week before I was going to take my SAT for the third time, I mentioned to Darya that I was struggling understanding a large portion of the Math section of the test. To my surprise, she was thoroughly capable skilled in tutoring me in math, along with English. In less than seven days, Darya was able to successfully prepare me for my last SAT test; subsequently, my SAT score improved by more than 100 points. If we had more time to go through the preparation book, I could have further surpassed this amazing progress. Another aspect in which Darya supported me in my college application and preparation process was in guiding me to refine my college essays for both private and public universities: as a result, I was accepted to more than half of the colleges that I applied to. Finally, I am most grateful for Darya and her efforts towards my success because of the high number of scholarships that I received in the second semester of my senior year in high school. Through Darya’s excellent editing and writing abilities, I was able to accumulate more than $200,000 in scholarship rewards from four different organizations. I could never have imagined this much triumph before meeting Darya; without these scholarship awards, I would have been forced to work during my breaks and during school to afford a college education. Now, all that I have to worry about is learning as much as I can while I am at UCSC. On account of my strong achievements in less than a year with Darya, I still utilize the many tips and lessons that she has instilled in me. As a result of this, I excelled in my classes at UCSC with a cumulative GPA of 3.6. Because of my outstanding academic success in the first quarter of college, I was exclusively invited by the university to apply to the College Scholars Program; this two-year program selects 20 students out of about 200 students applying from each college at UCSC to help give them meaningful academic challenges. Not only do I recognize Darya as one of the most significant people in my life because of my solid academic accomplishments, but also due to the genuine passion she holds to be sure that her tutees succeed. As her tutee, she constantly reminded me of my own abilities to encourage my confidence. We are still in contact today which further demonstrates her enthusiasm for her tutees. She is evidently benevolent, motivated, and intelligent, and I highly recommend her tutoring and guidance talents to any student who is fortunate enough to be her tutee.

I wanted to start learning Spanish while I stayed in US one month and I found Lena through Thumbtack. Although she was surprised that I chose her among a number of other teachers since she didn't have any reviews yet, I felt right after reading Lena's self introduction, that she is exactly that teacher with whom I want to learn Spanish. I encourage also others to choose other starting teachers without reviews and give them a chance, because my experience with Lena is very good. Lena is smart, interesting, friendly, talkative, always on time etc. Probably it is impossible to learn a new language within a couple of classes (at least for me it is), but within this time I hope to get an overview of the nature of language and know some basic things. Learning with Lena is flexible - you can compose your lessons according to your personal needs and level. Lena always contributes my ideas and wishes, also offers them from her side as well.

In the beginning, I was really afraid of talking to others in English because I know that I can’t speak English well. However, after some lessons, I become more and more confident and fell in love with the lessons. I tried speaking to others and they answered me. This greatly encouraged me.

Ayesha was great tutor for me. She really helped me understand my math lesson and explained things more than one way. She was very helpful by reviewing some stuff from previous lessons that we had gone over. She also gave me some tips to remember the steps for some equations. I am thankful for the time she gave up to help me.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

        • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
        • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.

        • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
        • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
        • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
