Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Tyler was one of the best electricians that I’ve ever had the experience with working with. Great prices and clearly communicated what the project would need and how he would go about doing it. Even when he wasn’t comfortable with a job he was super honest and straightforward. He will be the only electrician I will be using in the Bay Area for a long time.

I wanted recess lighting installed in my living room. The electrician that did the work was amazing. Prior to the work being done, the electrician explained to me what he had to do before he started work. Isaac was great! I’ve had them do three projects and plan to do more business with them very soon! Excellency!

Kenny is a versatile problem solver when it comes to electrician projects. The expectation was that I would purchase all supplies such as the dimmer switches and then Kenny would schedule a time to come in and do the installation. I'm definitely planning on working with him again.

Kenny is my new electrician. Definitely my go to guy. He and his sister and brother in law did efficient and safe work and I’m looking forward to seeing them again in the near future. Absolutely recommended. Fair and competitive pricing.

We had her install a new light fixture (run wire and place dimmer). She also patched and painted, which is so difficult to find with an electrician. She was very communicative and did great work! We will definitely hire her again.

Jose did a great job installing an outdoor outlet and running outdoor lighting conduit, including fixing some work from another electrician that wasn’t properly done. Friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled. I’ll be using him for all of my future electrical work.

Marlon did outstanding work. He was punctual, fast, knowledgeable, and solved the problem of the overloaded circuits after a thorough analysis (unlike previous electricians we've tried). Most important, he took the time to educate is about what he was doing, and how we can manage our electrical use for maximum efficiency in this old condo. So impressed. Thank you!

Showed up 10 minutes early and did an excellent job trouble shooting and replacing two shorting circuits. Will definitely be using him again. When you need a real electrician who will get it right first time, hire Juan. He figured out an issue that two other handymen couldn't fix because they just don't have the knowledge and training that Juan has.

Eugene/Yevgeniy is an extremely good electrician, his work was impeccable and his team is equally skilled. Even more than this I was impressed with his professionalism, how respectful he is and what great value he provided. He suggested small upgrades (for example a USB outlet) which made a huge impact and he was not pushy. He knows his work and we highly recommend him. Thanks!

As a realtor who's always looking for good reliable electricians and handymen, I have to say I was impressed with Gin. He was at the property on time and got started quickly. For some reason, all my request weren't included in my job description but Gin finished for a little extra. We had lights that weren't working (he fixed them), replaced ceiling fans and other wall and ceiling fixtures that were not up to code. All around he was more than anything reliable with a great professional attitude.

Val arrived on time and completed all work same day as he came out to quote. Phenomenal work ethic, extraordinarily clean. Val put in recessed lighting in my kitchen, bathroom and powder room, replaced a light fixture and a bathroom vent fan. My condo has a completely different feel and I’m grateful for how much Val accomplished in one day. Highly recommend him - especially because another electrician left patches, Val went above and beyond to fill and sand over any holes he left.

Pablo arrived on time, was professional, and did an excellent job converting and installing our kitchen lights from outdated 4 prong can lights to Philips Hue LED lights. We ran into some more complex electrical issues on another light, and we decided not to move forward with that one. He was super thorough, and spent time working through the issue, and talked though potential solutions if we decide we would like to install light there in the future. I would definitely recommend Pablo for your electrician needs.

Listen up everyone, this is a 5 STAR public announcement. I couldn’t ask for a better electrician. This lovely couple (George and Alison) got back to me immediately after I left my number for them to call me. George is very knowledgeable, even when I had no clue as to what was going on. He sacrificed his time and fit me right in when I didn’t have an appointment. He did an awesome job at diagnosing and fixing my electrical panel. To anyone who is having electrical problems whether residential or commercial, George is your go to man.

I ordered a Nest thermostat which Nest claimed would be compatible with my system. It wasn't. I was quoted 240 dollars by Camex builders for the installation. The device was not charged as I did not know so we had to wait one hour to charge it. We took a long break to get coffee. After it was charged and many conversations with Nest Support it was determined that the device was not compatible. He told me the new rate was 300 dollars not 240 because I took more time than initially stated. I guess an estimate is after all only an estimate. The device was not compatible and not his fault to be honest. Nest did not fully look into the matter but since I was charged more than the quoted amount AND there was no finished product I cannot give 5 stars. I do not know if the electrician should be able to determine compatibility by looking at the system or not. But I think Nest said I should have taken a photo of the wall unit which they never asked me to. Overall, it was a disaster. I also got a very high quote from this gentleman to paint my small one bedroom apartment so that is not an option for me as well.

We hired Ryan as he stated he was a licensed electrician and his fee was $50 per hour. We asked for proof of his license and he provided a copy of his application for California electrician’s license. However, it was not legible and difficult to know what the document said. Nonetheless, we moved forward with Ryan as we believe he displayed good intention and was readily available. Unfortunately, he worked with my husband as I was out of the country, and we pay a full day of work plus an additional $200 charge for “parts” without a receipt. Ryan promised to return and complete the work as one chandelier arrived broken and needed replacement, and at that point, he was going to provide a receipt. An issue on our end, my husband paid Ryan from the wrong checkbook and his check of $800 was return. However, we honor his fees and replace it with cash immediately after we learned of the incident, yet the total amount exceeds the day per diem based on $50 per hour. We also take responsibility, for moving forward when we should have waited for proper documentation and better communication. It was an expensive lesson for us to learn.

Mr. Ghafouri is a quintessential professional gentleman. He provided a prompt response to my inquiry and arrived the following morning 9AM sharp. After inspecting my main electrical breaker and sub panel breaker box he determined there was no visible problem. He was very polite and not at all opportunist. I was so concerned being a single woman with no electrical background I would be gouged. Another electrician quoted $350 without even visiting the property. Mr. Ghafouri did the consultation free of charge and informed me to call him if my circuit breaker continues to trip. He informed me that since I have additional guests in the home the circuit is being overloaded when everyone is using all the appliances and outlets and to speak to the guests about not using everything all at once. He did suggest that if I wanted additional amps I could install a new sub panel at the cost of $2000, but it would be less expensive for me to have my guests monitor there usage. I'm sure others would have taken advantage and insisted I spend $2000. I respect, trust, and highly recommend Mr. Ghafouri!

Please be careful with this guy, his communication is not good, nor complete. I say communication because I don’t want to say lie, but maybe by omission. Craig answered my need for an electrician to take care of a knob-and-tube issue I have. Now I know quite a bit about electric wiring and how it is done, just not knob-and-tube. We did two contacts through the system and he asked that I call, which I did. I explained what I needed and he seemed confident that he could do what was needed. He said he would need to see the work before giving a quote; I had noticed that he was in Milpitas and mentioned I didn’t want him to come all that way just for a quote. He said he had another job in Oakland and it wouldn’t be a problem. Next day he calls and says he will be at my place at 3pm and would check it out. I arranged for the time off and was there at 3. I get a call from him at 4:45 that he is on his way, an hour and 45 minutes late. He arrives and starts looking at the job, never gives me a quote and asks me to turn off the power. He says he’ll cut the wire and put it in a box and that will be fine (not sure that is the best or safest solution) and says the other two wires are dead. I can’t verify that as he has the tester but it isn’t going off when he touches them, so maybe he’s right, they were live before with my tester. We turn the power back on and he says how much did I quote you (What?) I said you didn’t, he says well my minimum for coming to Oakland is $250.00. (?!?!?!) But he says he’ll give me a deal and says $175.00. I pay him, grudgingly thinking that is way too much for what he did and if he’d told me that Monday morning I would not have engaged him. All the time he was there he was condescending and didn’t listen to anything I said. After he leaves I get my tester out and the wires he left were live so now I need to get someone else out to fix my still existing problem and I’m cheated out of $175.00. Two hours late, condescending, not truthful or forth-coming about his rates and doesn’t finish the job. Please, please, please get him to tell you upfront what everything is going to cost and what he is going to do. Be very careful with this one. One star is really too much. BEWARE.
