Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Very professional and explained everything that was going to have to be done. Did not hire this gentleman because the job only requires a handyman not an electrician.

I was really lucky to come across Mark in Thumbtack. I was searching for an electrician to do electrical wiring fixes and lighting installations in my home and his name came out on the searches. Indeed he is a great electrician! He makes sure everything is well taken cared of. He responds quickly on questions and price reasonable for the work he's done. He even gives suggestions on possible options that I could have when adding motion lighting on my garage area. Thanks Mark!

We hired Dejan to install two pendant light fixtures (with a dimmer switch) in our townhome. Dejan was very responsive, thorough, and performed high quality work. We will definitely hire Dejan the next time we need an electrician.

I had to ask him over and over to speak clearly and to face me when he spoke. His price ended up being almost three times that of the guy that ended up doing the work. He wanted $750 for less than 3 hours of work. And he is not a licensed electrician. Seriously?

I tried to hire HG Electric, but he did not follow through on the scheduled dates/times. We scheduled a Friday for him to do the project. On the day he was scheduled to come, he asked to come later in the day instead of the morning. Same day, he asked to reschedule because he was not going to make it. We rescheduled for the following Monday. He did not show on Monday and asked to reschedule again. We decided to go with another electrician.

So frustrated! I know enough about electrical to be dangerous, but was stuck because my GFCI outlet which is daisy chained to my irrigation system was not working. The outlet appeared to have died so I replaced the outlet (taking pictures of the way it was originally wired) and still had no luck on either getting power. I hired Green Electric since they are local to my area and could come out today. So disappointed. The electrician arrived, I explained the situation and was quoted $333 to trace the line and fix the issue. When I asked what he thought the issue was, he said he didn't know and would need to look. TOTAL LIE! He fixed the issue with the GFCI outlet in 15 minutes. I expected the cost to be adjusted based on the work/issue that was completed, nope, still $333. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars is after calling management and complaining that I was not paying that kind of money for 15 minutes of work the price was negotiated down to $150, which is still crazy high. Oh and my irrigation system is still not working. I recommend looking elsewhere if you need electrical work. I won't be hiring these guys again.
