Marcel and his entire staff were fabulous. The food was fabulous, as was the service. They were very efficient and truly cared that our guests were all enjoying themselves. Many guests complimented Marcel's catering and I would highly recommend and higher him again. My experience was excellent with Marcel.

Gourmet Lovers recently catered my son's wedding reception and everything turned out wonderfully! Carolina, Boris and their team took care of everything from start to finish and they didn't leave until the place was spotless. The food was amazing. My son and his bride didn't want "traditional" reception food so Chef Boris put together some of the tastiest tacos, beans, rice and salsa we have ever had, not to mention a fun interactive build your own Nacho Bar for the hors d'oeuvres that all the guests raved about. Not only was Chef Boris' food amazing, Carolina's wedding cake was something special. She worked with us to design just want the bride and groom wanted. The cake was rich in flavor and beautifully decorated. She certainly knows how to bake an amazing cake. I am a fan of Gourmet Lovers Catering and highly recommend them to anyone needing a caterer who not only knows how to put together great food, but knows how to work within your budget. Carolina was always prompt in returning calls and always stayed in touch with us. I plan on using them for all my catering needs in the future.

Jose and his team did an outstanding job at our wedding. The staff was polite and the food was excellent. Everyone commented on how good the food was and the portions were more than enough. Jose went out of his way to help out and be available to us. His prices are great as well. I would absolutely use this company again in the future and would recommend them to anyone thinking about catering. Thanks Jose! You rock!

Anna and her crew at "The Grill and Pastry Creations Catering" were great! Anna arrived early before her staff and went work helping me with mixing punch and setting up the kitchen. She and her staff were very friendly and helped to calm us with their professionalism. Friends and family complemented us throughout the evening about the food served at my 50th birthday celebration. We were very happy with the products and services. Very professional with a casual feel. The Vegetarian Lasagna was the BOMB! We will be re-contacting you in the future. Thank you so much! I decided to look for a caterer for my Mom's celebration of life and my internet search lead me to Thumbtack. After inputting my needs I quickly received a response back from Tonya at Sierra Madre Catering with a detailed quote and attached menu. When I called to speak with Tonya I immediately got a good vibe from her voice. She seemed excited and eager to help plan our event and made me feel comfortable that everything would be taken care of. I am so thankful I decided to use Sierra Madre for my event. We ordered appetizers and desserts and they arrived and set everything up, brought their own trash cans and kept the tables clean as people were done eating. The staff was professional and nice and their food was DELICIOUS! Many of our guests gave feedback that the food was great and they even ran out of business cards because a lot of people were interested in having their info. At such a difficult time with the passing of a loved one, these details are important but not ones you want to worry about yourselves and Tonya and Sierra Madre staff took that burden off my shoulders and I am so thankful for that. I will recommend them to anyone in need of a caterer for any event and if I could give more than 5 stars I most definitely would!! Thank you Tonya and Sierra Madre Catering!!

Catering made easy. Tuition Bites offers appetizers, entrees, and desserts all made by them. No reheated food or prepackaged desserts. You can tell the quality of the food is more of a homemade cooked meal. That alone made me fall in love. Their staff was really friendly and I look forward to planning another event with them serving us their great food.

Steven and Mariel did an outstanding job catering my event (low key gathering of friends). I requested Latin American - theme. They prepared delicious guacamole + chips, fried queso, vegetable quesadillas, chicken lettuce wraps and pork tacos with corn tortillas. I was expecting guests with a gluten allergy and guests who are vegetarian. Steven worked with me to customize the perfect menu within my budget. I will be using Steven again in the future. Next time for a more sophisticated professional event in my home.

Food First Events & Catering Co. recently did two events for my company and the feedback was amazing! The food was stepped up in such a way that the impact was noticeable. The breakfast spreads that were delivered on time and set up impeccably were delicious with a few notable homemade pastry items that left people talking! I experienced nothing but professionalism, reliability and class from this experience. Also, working with David to make sure I met my budget was extremely easy and he was eager to help meet my needs without compromising quality. I highly recommend!

Work quality - phenomenal Professionalism - fantastic Responsiveness - Joanna couldn't have been more responsive if she tried. Value- heck yes! Do you know how pricey mobile bartending and catering vendors can be in LA? This company is a steal considering the amount of collaboration and quality of service your receive. Punctuality - On time, super fast in setting up, even faster tearing down. I highly recommend this vendor. I planned an entire event from another state and Joanna made me feel like I had nothing to worry about on her end. Will work with her again for sure.

Here are some highlights that stuck out: gave advice about all kinds of things leading up to the big day- rehearsal dinner location, invitations, wedding games; really listened to what we like & tailored her suggestions accordingly; was patient with us when we were indecisive; gave us a lot of guidance during the rehearsal; stayed all the way through the end of the night and packed up our parents' cars. One of her major "deliverables" is an awesomely detailed schedule of events! This was a huge asset for us. She was also extremely attentive & helpful! She was direct but not bossy- exactly what we were hoping for. I would definitely recommend her to any brides who need some guidance!

Chef Don and his team made my event extremely successful. Don was so easy to communicate with, and was very flexible and accommodating. He offered his suggestions and ideas when needed and made sure the entire evening went smoothly. His team was professional and friendly. I couldn't have asked for more. And the food? Amazing! We all loved everything and the report from these picky teenagers was a huge thumbs up! I will definitely contact this catering company for my next big event!

Sydney made a special/private dinner for my fiancé and I after our engagement. She was amazing!! She emailed with my fiancé ahead of time and found out what sort of foods we like and what was meaningful and special to our relationship and then based the menu off of that. She was present enough to explain things to us, but also gave us our privacy. It was the perfect balance. It was so fun to feel like we have a private chef catering to all of our needs and expectations. Very romantic! The food Sydney cooked was AMAZING! From the appetizer to the dessert, we could not have asked for a better meal. I would highly recommend Sydney. You will not be disappointed.

They offer large portion sizes, we had so much leftovers for black Friday. We will definitely use La Perry Catering in the future.

John and his amazing team are real miracle workers! Extremely professional from our first conversation through the entire event, John was a delight to work with. Reasonable prices, the food was great (I will definitely be visiting their restaurant), and completely self sufficient. I didn't have to worry about anything! Craftsman Catering barbecued on sight, providing a little entertainment and a few samples right off the grill for guests that wandered by. Not only were the main dishes phenomenal but I still have guests raving about the coleslaw and other sides! Thank you so much John & Craftsman team! I'll be seeing you soon!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
