I DON’T DO ESTIMATES. I simply charge $75 per hour for my time (with a $100 minimum). FYI Thumbtack charges every Pro you request (whether you use them or not) so PLEASE ONLY CONTACT ME IF YOU’RE SURE YOU NEED MY HELP. I’d appreciate that! I’m a Bay Area native with a Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University. My specialties include electrical, LED conversions, general household repairs, hanging artwork, assembling IKEA furniture, design ideas, painting, etc. I’ve been providing a handyman/honey-do service since 2001 so I’m very proficient and have all the tools needed to complete a job efficiently at a fair price. My reviews will tell you that. I can help you manage your home to keep up with projects in the future. I was nicknamed the “rent-a-husband” by members of the Burlingame Mothers Club. I have a creative eye and have worked with many designers. I enjoy helping people with their to-do lists and solving those home improvement projects that never seem to get done (or which just came up) Life can be stressful and I understand the importance of finding someone trustworthy and knowledgeable. Everyone needs help and that’s what I’m here for. Although I’m new to Thumbtack, I’ve been providing my service in Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Foster City, San Carlos and Atherton since 2001. Many referrals on Nextdoor, Hillsborough Together and the BMC. It is my mission to keep my clients happy and feeling accomplished. I’d love to help you with your projects! -GregSee more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

I needed an electrician to replace an outdoor outlet on a Sunday, and, thinking nobody would reply until the following day, I was thrilled that Frank would come that day. He purchased a new box, replaced the old, and demonstrated its use and practicality. Frank is very professional, efficient and certainly very responsive. You can rely on him for work well done.

Nate was very professional. He showed up on time and immediately put our family as ease by explaining the root cause of the electrical problem. He then went to the store and purchased the item necessary to fix the problem. The process took less time than I expected and the job was excellent! Most professional electrician I ever hired for job! Thank you Nate! highly recommended.

Installed Tesla charger for me. Stopped working after 2 months while also causing some major problem with the electric lines which led to the boiler not working any longer. I asked him to come have a look (and also offered to pay). Cancelled appointments last minute and stopped responding to messages. Now need to look for another electrician to come fix all this mess.

I thought Richard was great. We used him for 2 outlets that had stopped working. He skillfully and efficiently diagnosed the problem and fixed it. In addition to replacing the sockets, he figured out the wiring was incorrect behind them and fixed those as well. He was able to get to the root of the problem thanks to his electrician background, and I felt he went the extra mile. I'd use Richard again for future electrical needs.
