I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

Jose and his staff catered my wedding of 200 people. To say their service was amazing is an understatement. He came through for me not once, not twice, but 3 times! He catered our dinner, which was described as the best wedding food anyone has had. The food was all gone and people went back for seconds. He also made all the desserts for my dessert bar; cheesecake, chocolate cake, lemon tarts, and fruit tarts. Then, he also catered the best taco bar towards the end of the evening. All the good was exquisite. I spoke to 5 different caterers and Jose had everything I needed for the best price. My wedding coordinator also mentioned he was the best she's seen! No one could out do him! By far, incredible! I recommend him multiple times over.

Everything went off like clockwork. A true professional. This was a party for 40, and Shawna made brisket, turkey, a few side salads, grilled asparagus, and lemon cupcakes. Everything was a hit. In hindsight the only thing I would have adjusted was adding additional brisket. We ran out of meat and while the count was for 40, several folks didn't show up. My husband didn't get any. With that said this should not take away from my excellent experience. Just something to think about with headcount going forward. Some people went back for seconds which added to the issue, but in my opinion not enough to make an impact, as the headcount was 40. I also think beef was more popular so something I need to manage also. The guests raved about the food and asked for her business card. Shawna and her helper took care of everything from picking up finished plates from people, to cleaning up, and placing leftovers in smaller dishes. Shawna will be my go caterer forever!

Chef Mumsie and team are the best caterers I have ever worked with...everyone at the event raved about the food...staff was professional and efficient. Chef Renee presented the food and we all began to immediately drool over her signature items. She created unique flavors and items that we had never seen before and couldn't wait to try. OOOHHHHH and when we did!! I can't recall when i've tasted things that just made me want to close my eyes and dance... MMMMMM Mmmmm mmmmm. They took care of everything with magnificent precision. Arrived early, set it all up without a word and fed 80 picky ladies to perfection. The price was very reasonable...you cannot get this caliber of service excellence for this price anywhere. They even helped me select the venue based on what I was looking for since they were familiar with all the best sites. The venue needed no Insurance documentation because of their great experiences in working with Chef Mumsie and her team. If I could I would give them 7 stars and it still would not be enough!!!! If you want OUTSTANDING food and FABULOUS customer service then you're here. . . they will take care of everything without missing a beat and leave you and your guests with very happy palates with delicious food. THANK YOU ladies for the BEST High-Tea we've ever had!!!! We wil definitely be hiring again for our needs !!! Kisses

I am beyond grateful to Thumbtack for connecting me to Chef Keith Prante and his team at Hautè Productions Events and Catering to cater my mom's 80th birthday celebration. They are absolutely A-MAZING! Chef Prante was one of two chefs who responded to my request via Thumbtack, and I also received a personal referral. Neither of the other caterers offered ANYWHERE NEAR the quality, selections, variety and value that Hautè offered at my price point. We had our tasting today, and it absolutely sealed the deal! Everything was delicious and the presentation was outstanding. I highly recommend Hautè Productions to any potential customer who appreciates excellence, accommodation and genuine customer service.

Zeke Casas catered my daughters Quinceñera, he made Chili verde, rice, beans, fresh salad, an amazing salad dressing, rolls, and salsa. So many people loved the food.. so much flavor with every bit.. there was not one thing without flavor.. the family rated his food as the most amazing, delicious, dish they have tasted. Zeke and his crew are very respectful, helpful, and caring. They take the time out to make sure everything was to your liking.. they left the hall kitchen spotless, like no one had ever used it.. I give Zeke and his crew 10 stars.. amazing job, amazing food, and I recommend him for your next event... never can go wrong with a great caterers..

I am thrilled to share with you my experience with Chef LaTay. First it must said, her food is AMAZING. In Jan 2015, I married the love of my life; I had a small backyard wedding of about 75 ppl total and Chef LaTay catered the food for my special day. We decided to go with Tri-Tip Roast, Fully loaded mashed potatoes, Green Beans, and Salad. Her food was a hit. Delicious and memorable. My guests were happily fed and pleased with every bite and so was I. In the past, Chef LaTay would do weekly orders every Friday and Saturdays where she would deliver her meals to those local near her. It was a huge meal that came with dessert and a drink, worth the price indeed. That’s where/when I would also have some of her other delicious foods. My personal favorites are her Macaroni and Cheese, her Salmon, her Enchiladas, her Chicken (every way she makes it), and her Oxtail. She also makes wonderful tasty desserts. Her cakes are all homemade and are to die for. I love her Chocolate cake and her frostings are the best! Better than any other cakes I’ve had. And I can’t forget the dessert my husband and I always ask for throughout the year, Banana Pudding! Again, AMAZING! It is an honor to have Chef LaTay’s food be a part of my life. Every delicious bite makes you wish there was no such thing as getting full. Having her for your events or for a small special occasion, you won’t be disappointed. Chef LaTay is very creative with her food and service. She comes with class and excellent customer service. She makes sure you get what you asked for; just very professional with a welcoming loving spirit. Chef LaTay It’s Made Devine is worth your time to try her food, because I guarantee you, you’ll be asking for more!

Sydney made a special/private dinner for my fiancé and I after our engagement. She was amazing!! She emailed with my fiancé ahead of time and found out what sort of foods we like and what was meaningful and special to our relationship and then based the menu off of that. She was present enough to explain things to us, but also gave us our privacy. It was the perfect balance. It was so fun to feel like we have a private chef catering to all of our needs and expectations. Very romantic! The food Sydney cooked was AMAZING! From the appetizer to the dessert, we could not have asked for a better meal. I would highly recommend Sydney. You will not be disappointed.

Meraki is a Greek word used to describe putting a lot of love, creativity and soul into something which is why Jory Pomeranz chose the name. It is easy to smell, taste and see that a lot of love goes into each Meraki Meal. Jory has a natural ability to combine flavors. He can time every course so they are not only cooked at the perfect temperature, but served at the correct temperature and add flare to something basic like a chicken thigh. Even the grill marks on a piece of chicken are perfectly spread out and just enough to give the chicken a grill flavor without ruining the juicy tenderness we all strive for when making chicken. Jory can make things that you hated as a kid taste delectable. Jory adds spices and sauces up until the minute prior to serving to make sure each plate is perfect. I once saw Jory save what was about to be terrible chicken tacos by creating a homemade taco sauce from a nearly empty refrigerator. With Meraki Meals the food suits the season. Who wants to eat watermelon in October when pomegranate and apples are so delicious. Every Meraki Meal tastes like the season and uses fresh fruits and vegetables. Meraki Meals put a healthy spin on what looks and tastes like a calorie nightmare, but each meal is filled with proteins and vitamins. Not only is the flavor impeccable, the presentation is a work of art. Even when catering for 35-40 people, Meraki Meals are served in beautiful silver dishes. Meraki Meals are great for crowds of any size. I have to make a conscious effort not to scrape my plate clean every time I have had Meraki Meals. I highly recommend Meraki Meals for a party of any size, but especially 8-12 people because this might give the chef a chance to sit and talk with you which is a treat of its own!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
