Keavan was on time, handled himself very professionally and took care of everything on our list and then some. He was there to make sure the job was done right the first time! He reconnected some heating ductwork that had fallen apart, adjusted some french doors that weren't closing properly, installed a bunch of babyproofing cabinet door latches and hung two large mirrors in our dining room. So if you are looking for someone you can trust to get the job done right and with a smile then Keavan is your guy! We will definitely be welcoming him back to our home again very soon for more items on our to do list :)

Steve and Judah did fine work on a big, miscellaneous project -- the deck they finished for us looks great! They also replaced a disposal that broke while they were here. They were friendly and so easy to deal with. I didn't even mind waking up extra early to open gates, etc. Pleasant, nice, nice people. Still a few bits of plastic I should have pointed out at the final walk-around/check-off. I will hire them again.

I'm delighted to have found a professional with years' of experience in irrigation. He quickly reviewed our problematic sprinkler system, found the source of the problems, obtained the materials, and installed them. He also helped educate us about the system and its use. Thanks, John!

If you want to have your stress released, Barry is the way to go! I needed him at the last minute and he came with his son and daughter-in-law. Not only did they get the job done, I hired the son and daughter-in-law for the next day. I litterally sat and watched them move. Barry also fixed patched some holes, fixed the stairwell, and my back deck. I will hire them again to move into my next place. Thanks Barry for being there for me and taking the load off my shoulders. I couldn't have survived this move without you guys!

Jeff is a highly skilled, experienced professional whom I would hire again in a heartbeat. He did several jobs for me ranging from replacing a doorbell and a door handle to plumbing and electrical. He reseated a wobbly toilet, cleaned out two sink drains, replaced two bathroom faucets and checked another bathroom sink, toilet and tub. He replaced a ceiling fan and installed several towel bars. He showed me how to use a borrowed drill and answered an electrical question I had. I felt comfortable running to Home Depot while he was working in the house. His work was very thorough and he guarantees it. I feel confident in recommending him for any type of handyman job you might have. In addition, he is very personable and easy to communicate with.

He was very communicative and thorough, which made for an job so well done that it met all our expectations. Hi requested a walk-through at the end, with a crew on hand ready to respond right then to anything we may have found. His excellent communication skills and thoroughness at the beginning gave us the confidence that he was going to be so throughout. During the initial walk through, he was seeing the same types of things that we were in areas pertaining to dry rot, and he asked very specific questions as to trim paint style preferences. He definitely gave us confidence that he was going to do a good job, and the end product proved to be great!

Jeff installed a water line for my fridge. The water source was on the opposite side of the room and we have a slab foundation. A couple of previous estimates said it would be very difficult to get the water line installed and quoted costs that reflected high difficulty. Enter Jeff. He too a look, climbed into the attic and said "it will take about three hours, maybe less." Then quoted us a VERY reasonable price. He did it after returning with some parts. It works great and can't be seen...a worry of dropping down from the ceiling. Will call Jeff again.

Todd moved a spa and removed a deck. He was thorough and cleared the site completely and even disconnected the spa wiring in a way that it can be reused in the future. I will hire him again.

Hired Mak to change my den into a bedroom. This meant creating a wall and adding a closet. He also added trim to match what was currently there and when he was finished, you would never know what was original and what was the new wall. He also painted. His work was outstanding, especially for the price. I plan on using him again for my next job.

I wasn't able to be there, but my roommate was there to supervise the repair. He repaired my pocket door, repainted everything, and all for a very nominal fee and extremely quick. He was even able to use my existing hardware, and didn't put anything in he didn't need to have! I picked him, eventhough his rates were higher then other quotes I received, but I thoroughly was impressed with his professional response, and a detailed background on how long he has been doing handyman work. I would recommend him anytime, and will definitely use his services again. Remember folks, you get what you pay for!

If there were a sixth star, I would award it to Osbaldo. This is a bit of a late review as the project was completed prior to Thanksgiving 2014. We had carpeting, tile, and baseboard removed. New tile was laid in the kitchen and half bath. Hardwood flooring and 5 1/4" baseboard were installed in the family room. Moreover, a custom hearth, mantel, and stone facade were added to the fireplace. The result was excellent and we are still pleased with the craftsmanship. We will be hiring Osbaldo again for additional projects.

1 review 6/11/2017 Professional, efficient, and affordable. They also have an ingenious billing system that allowed me to control expenses and monitor day to day activities. This was critical to me as I live four hours from the project site and could not check work in person. I received daily reports on status and costs. Buying blocks of time, and paying for materials in real time, keeps the project costs from getting out of hand. My project consisted of 1. removing dry rot from leaking French doors in second floor bedroom and on balcony, 2. replacing subflooring and balcony deck, 3. removing and replacing replacing a wooden gate, 4. removing and replacing garage side door, 5. painting deck, gate, and interior molding, 6. removing French doors, and 7. hauling away debris. I will definitely hire Spectrum again!

This awesome lady cleaned the stove, kitchen cabinets, hallway, the bathroom, and bedrooms. Might not seem like a long list, but all of those things had been used and not up kept as well as it should have been by 5 college girls and included some serious pet, make up, and grease stains thay were no joke. We had not even a shadow of a chance getting done on time without her. Really reasonable and a great personality, you won't go wrong with hiring her and might make a new friend in the process.

Nate has done a great job in doing a deck on a very difficult sloppy terrain. The deck size ~900 sq. feet. The deck was done using redwood, the railing was very creative solution as the products in the store were very expensive. The railing was custom and so was the whole deck.

I had water intrusion during a storm in the winter. I called a big roofing company, they evaluated the issue and told me that the roof system was poorly designed and needed a major re-design that would involve re-construction of roof sections. I contacted Anthony for another opinion. Anthony and his team came out immediately, removed several roof tiles and found the actual problem: 15 years of dirt and debris had backed up the drainage system. They cleared the blockages and the issue was resolved. Anthony returned later in the season and did a complete cleaning of the valley flashing and gutters, beefed up the water proofing in key areas, and added an additional downspout to a long gutter line to improve drainage. Anthony's team was on time, very efficient, and cleaned up the work area. I highly recommend Cortek for any roofing issues.

Jerry suggested I paint my old redwood deck with rustoleum and did a great job. He also found some boards that were rotting (the deck is 25 years out) and worked hard in replacing those too.

I hired Nick to work on several house projects. From the very beginning he provided me with expert advice on the best way to complete the project along with a fair estimate. His work is very professional and he doesn't cut corners. He is hard working and arrives at stated times. The quality of work is top notch and very professional. If he encounters a problem not originally detected he will take the necessary steps informing the customer along with revised estimate. I have several additional projects that I need done and Nick is the person I trust and will call to complete the work. I am very confident that if you hire Nick you will be very satisfied with his work. Rich D.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
