I've been doing one hour of tutoring/day with a language coach from Spanish55 for about a month now. It's been an incredible experience!! I have learned so much this month and it's really helping to prepare me to care for Spanish speaking patients as a student midwife. I feel so grateful to have found Spanish55!

Lynne is great! I was unsure about trying yet another Spanish tutor, but it was necessary as my girls were not doing well with the never ending train of substitute teachers the school was giving them for their class. Lynne brought it all together so that it made sense and my girls could finally get some continuity. I don't know what we would have done with out her. In just a couple of weeks they were on track and their grades were back up where they should have been. Lynne didn't even need to know what the class was doing, she spoke with my girls and started to build on what they knew. It worked and we are very happy.

I needed last minute tutoring for a final exam and Nina was quick to respond and schedule me last minute. She explained everything very clearly and made sure to answer any questions I had. I feel like I learned more information in just one tutoring session than in most of my math classes this semester. I would highly recommend her for math tutoring.

Jenny was a fantastic ACT tutor for my son! I could not have picked a better tutor. Jenny worked with him this summer and was able to quickly ascertain his areas of strength and areas for needed development for the ACT. She also quickly assessed his learning style and put together an efficient customized learning/tutoring plan and tutoring schedule for the summer that helped him make huge strides in both his strongest and weakest sections of the ACT, improving his already high comprehensive test results by 5 points thus far with another week of tutoring yet to go! In particular she did an amazing job tutoring him on the English portion, helping him go from a 26 to a 35 in that section! He has really enjoyed working with her and looked forward to their tutoring sessions. I will be signing my younger son up for ACT tutoring with Jenny next summer for sure!

I was signed up to take a Kaplan course for GMAT prep and was talking to a co-worker about it when they told me their story. They took one of the same Kaplan courses I was signed up to take and didn't get their desired GMAT score. In their second attempt, they signed up for private tutoring with John Easter, one of Elite Home Tutoring tutors, and their GMAT score improved by over 100 points. After hearing this story, I called to cancel my Kaplan class & signed up with Elite Home Tutoring, with a special request to work with John. During my studies, I decided that I wanted to take the GRE instead of the GMAT. I explained this to my tutor John and to Eric at Elite Home Tutoring and the change was so simple. John is not only skilled in GMAT prep but GRE prep as well. So the only thing that would need to change were the materials. If you're looking for the best resources for test prep I highly recommend Elite Home Tutoring. I have no complaints!

I had a very tight schedule and a very bad grade in my College Algebra class. I submitted a request for a math tutor through Thumbtack and within minutes Dario and I were coordinating our first appointment. Met with Dario the next day and again over the weekend. He is extremely knowledgeable, professional and came well prepared to tackle the concepts I was struggling with. His willingness to be flexible with availability was clutch. Through no fault of Dario, I continue to struggle in my class but my tutoring with him really helped me identify my weaknesses and where I needed remediation. It got me asking the right questions in class. Would definitely hire Dario again.

Travis tutored me for about two years in my latter half of high school. He provided me all the necessary tools so score extremely high on the SAT and subject tests. He cares so much about his students and their success and goals in life. I'm currently at the college of my dreams, University of Southern California, and without Travis' constant mentoring I am unsure if I would have been given this opportunity. I cannot think of someone more highly recommended in my community to not only tutor kids but also guide them through the trials of growing up than Travis.

I found Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Services of San Diego Coast to be a very reliable and allows for quick access to quality tutors. The tutors are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Desiree, the Area Director, is a great resource as well when I have looked for guidance on questions with students, as I am a Special Education Teacher, and for my own children. I highly recommend Desiree and her tutors as a teacher and a parent!

Lauri has been tutoring my daughter Naomi now for almost two months. Naomi responds very well to her as she taylors the work around things she thinks Naomi would like and would be interested in. She got to know Naomi’s best way of learning and tailored her teaching around that aspect. Naomi is very shy and takes a while to warm up, but Lauri made it easy for her to get comfortable. Her reading has gotten better since, with Lauris constant encouragement and praise for good work Naomi had become more confident.

Many of teachers who work for Jackie at Amidon Studios taught me and my coworkers at our offices in Lima, Peru. We loved how cheerful they are and how much fun we had in our classes. We also liked learning about different cultures from them.

I needed my work computer cleaned from a virus immediately (same day). Even though he wasn't close to our business, I took my computer to him and he brought it back. He stayed until he knew it was up and running properly. He then left me with recommendations to try if the problems recurs. I am very pleased with the work.

Brooklyn helped my son with general middle school math and English tutoring over the past year and she has been a pleasure to work with. She is always prepared and has a multi-faceted approach to tutoring, so when one technique for learning didn't work for my son she was able to teach it another way until he understood it. I would be comfortable with her tutoring him in any subject, as his grades have gone up and she has been a great mentor helping him to refocus on school and reach his full potential. Brooklyn also helped him prepare to take the PSAT and he received recognition for his scores from the Duke TIP talent search program. We have loved working with her and it has been worth every penny!

I was looking to get some help with my child and I came across this great tutor. Ashley was very attentive and my daughter really enjoyed it. Her methods were very fun and effective. She was able to incorporate learning into things my child loves to do and teach her new ways of learning to . My child is a great speller now and she is learning new words daily.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
