  6. #6 Julia Padilla Music

    (3 reviews)

    Marian W.

Julia is an exceptional teacher and gifted in her ability to explain the execution of what you are trying to achieve, whether that is in correct breathing, hitting notes on a scale, or bringing a song to life. She is a delight and I will miss my lessons with her after I move from the Bay Area. I feel confident though that I can take with me a solid foundation as I go forward with my singing.

Pat is amazing. In just four short weeks, I'm already noticing improvement in the way I handle my voice -- much, much healthier way! She's also a joy to work with. Extremely positive and honest. I'm so happy to have found her and finally am able to fulfill my lifelong dream of being able to sing at my family's karaoke parties. :)

Thumbtack Spotlight

Joseph Murphy

(9 reviews)

Dancing is fun and a good form of exercise. Joseph Murphy is an experienced dance instructor who offers dance lessons to those who want to learn personally or for special occasions and programs. He is flexible to his students and conscious of how they will use this skill.

Each client that he has worked with has various reasons to dance. Some clients are in preparation for a special event, to update their skills, and others just do it for fun. There are also clients who are passionate dancers and find dancing a form of release from their emotions.

One memorable project was

a waltz I danced at a showcase in 2013. My student and I had worked together off and on other things and when showcase time was rolling around, I was thrilled when she agreed to do a number. It was a nice balance of basics, more advanced content, and some nice tricks/showy movements. It's a routine I'm very proud of because it really showed off my student and our understanding of American Smooth waltz as a style.

If you want to learn dancing in an artistic way, let Joseph Murphy handle your dance lessons.

  1. #1 USPTA Certified Tennis Instructor

    (47 reviews)

    Kristie I.

I’ve enjoyed working with Fred and have been very happy with the results. I had been taking group tennis lessons, but was making slow and minimal results. The one-on-one time with Fred really made a difference and I’m seeing real progress again. Separate from the instruction itself, Fred is just fun to work with. There have been several sessions when I was so tired and exhausted prior to seeing Fred that I was sure the added hour of tennis training that day would feel like too much. I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that after working with him for a few minutes my mood instantly perked up and felt a second bout of energy coming my way. I recommend Fred to anyone who’s looking to improve their tennis game and prefers to work with instructors that are flexible, easy to get along with and most important for me…fun to work with.

I have been taking voice lessons with Marla Volovna for 7 months now. In this short time I have progressed faster than I ever had before, in vocal technique as well as in interpretation and musicianship. Marla is very demanding, very honest and very encouraging… a killer combo for success. And Marla’s commitment to her students’ progress really extends beyond the weekly lesson, with regular communication of tips to improve technique, interpretation, links to performances, documentaries, archives, etc… I highly recommend Volovna Vocal Studio.

    Dimitar S.

Joseph taught me and my fiancee to dance salsa. In six lessons I went from a beginner who doesn't know a single to turn, to being able to dance a whole song chaining a series of moves. He was providing very actionable and specific feedback which helped me improve my technique and timing. I'd be happy to work again with him in the future. Thanks!

  7. #7 ISport

    Amron D.

Quality of Instruction: Excellent My husband and I went to Al for lessons in preparation for our Hawaii vacation. My husband was afraid of the water and didn’t want another vacation where he sat on the beach while I had all the fun. He had previously spent a bundle on semi-private classes for adults who are afraid of the water to no avail. My Husband worked with Al for about two months and learned various swimming strokes and techniques and the proper use of equipment, including snorkels, masks, paddle boards, fins, wetsuits, etc. My Husband was so excited about his progress that I signed up with Al as well. I have always loved water but still wound up learning a great deal by refining my swimming strokes, breathing techniques, etc. Al loves all water sports. When we expressed an interest in scuba, Al generously spent a whole Saturday with us, about the tanks and BCD's in tow, in a friend’s pool teaching us the basics. Our vacation was wonderful. We swam, snorkeled and even got our first scuba certification together. Amazing! I do not believe this would have been possible had it not been for Al’s excellent instruction. Al is very keen on safety and I feel it was this emphasis on safety that helped my husband overcome his lifelong fear of water because he FELT safer in the water and consequently, much more confident in the water. Al is very thorough and takes pains to make sure you understand each step of what he is teaching you, prior to going on to the next step. In between classes, we would receive emails reinforcing what we learned. We were so pleased with our experience that we signed up, our 16 year old for lessons as the only exercise our son was getting was pushing the buttons on the video game controller. His physical condition has improved to the point that Al's now taking him out to the marina and he can swim 3,000 yards non-stop. Our son has passed the lifeguard certification swimming requirements testing and will be getting his lifeguard certification this month. Make no mistake. Al’s lessons are not lightweight. He will work you out, he wants you to give it your best, but he is also sensitive to what your needs are, is not pushy, gives positive reinforcement, and takes the time to develop one-on-one relationships with his students. I would not hesitate to recommend this knowledgeable and capable instructor to ANYONE. You will learn everything you need to know and more and have a great time doing it.
