    David Williams Music

    (15 reviews)

I've been taking guitar and singing lessons with David for a few months, and I've got to say I've had a really great time learning from him! David is an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable teacher who clearly cares about his students and their goals, and better still has played and performed with the artists that I like best. It took me a while to find a teacher who was willing to teach me the music I wanted to play instead of starting with their core competence, so it was really refreshing that within a month or two with plenty of practice I was able to learn one of my favorite songs (Three Rounds and a Sound by Blind Pilot, if you're curious), and a little longer to start singing it, which I was really stoked about. He has been great about breaking things down when the piece we're working on is too challenging. David has also pushed me to pursue my goal of creating music, helping along the way to create melodies and lyrics. I have to say, it takes a great teacher to get me to sing and to share lyrics with them (do you know how embarrassing that can be?). I could go on, but suffice it to say, David is a great teacher, and I'm really glad I started taking lessons with him.

Marla is a wonderful teacher. I was looking for someone who specializes in classical vocal training and she was perfect. I've had 4 lessons so far and am learning a lot about the mechanics of proper diaphragm usage, placements in order to produce the ideal sound. One thing to remember about learning any instrument (and yes, your voice is an instrument!) is that you won't master it overnight or even over the course of a couple of months. It takes time, practice, and perseverance. So far Marla has been an excellent teacher and I look forward to continue working with her.

    Julia Norton

    (11 reviews)

Julia is a gifted teacher who brings multidisciplinary experience to each student to customize the learning process. For someone just starting voice lessons for fun I had no idea where to begin, but Julia has worked with me to break music down to a level I could grasp and helped me set realistic stepping stones to each goal. Her lessons are a combination of no nonsense exercises and just plain creative fun, something only the best teachers can achieve, which she accomplishes through her work ethic and delightful sense of humor. If you are not sure where to begin, feel you are missing blocks of information in your understanding of music, or have an emotional block to voice work I recommend Julia because she can meet you where you are and help craft a path to where you want to go.

Allie is a down to earth, experienced musician and instructor. I feel like she was able to quickly gauge where I was at and start the lessons there. After just a couple of ukelele lessons I understand concepts I hadn't grasped through a previous guitar class or music books. I also love that she includes my curious one year old and lets her explore the instruments.

    DCPiano & Music

    (9 reviews)

As a professional musician, I have studied and worked at my craft for many years. Longer than a doctor went to med school and longer than a lawyer went to law school. I am first and foremost a pianist. I perform, I teach, and I share. I also do lots of vocal coaching since I have an extensive background in professional theater. I have played the piano for nearly a dozen Broadway shows in NYC and have musical directed hundreds of musicals from high school and community theaters, to regional and professional stages. I have also accompanied and played for many high profile entertainers, politicians, and Broadway stars. I am also the new Resident Music Director of the Berkeley Playhouse Theatre in Berkeley, CA. I want to continue to offer personal and private lessons to kids and adults alike as I make this transition from the East Coast to the Bay Area. I also run a very successful in-home music studio in the DC metro area, and with my passion to teach, I want to continue that here in CA. My services include piano lessons; vocal coaching; audition prep; musical directing; music transposition services; music arranging; recording backing tracks; piano accompaniment for your performance, recital or audition; and piano entertainment on any style of music for your event. All lessons are collaborative and hands on, and not at all stuffy or boring. This is not your mother's piano lesson. I am only accepting 10 new students, so join now.

    Christine Jarc, MFA, soprano, musicologist

I am a fabulous teacher! Really. Teaching voice is my primary employment. I am highly qualified with years of experience and enjoy a reputation from students, parents and my own peers as an effective, perceptive and empathetic instructor and mentor. In a way, voice lessons are a bit like therapy, only less expensive and lots more fun! Often, I incorporate musicianship skills into my lessons. In addition, I work as a general tutor specializing in study skills, language arts, history and biological sciences, incorporating combinations of learning modalities to increase successful outcomes. An organized learner is a more confident learner, and minimizing anxiety leads to increased success and imbues a greater love of learning. Lessons are not a "one-size-fits-all" way of working. My goal is to meet the individual student's needs and create a program to help that student meet his or her goals. One other thing, I am the mom of two college-age sons, one of whom had challenges in executive functioning and auditory processing. Both challenges he "outgrew" by applying fundamental study skill practices. Today, he is a consistent honor roll student. In many ways, he taught me how to support learning. On another tutoring site, I have over a dozen references I'd be happy to provide you. Meanwhile, contact me, so we can discuss your interests and options.

I am an embodied art therapist. Through creative expression and the tapping of the imagination, clients examine their body, feelings, emotions, and thought processes. Therapy is tailored to each person's unique needs, moving freely between drawing and painting, dancing, music, storytelling, and energetic and hands-on somatic work. Multiple forms of expression aid with deeper exploration. I also draw on my training and licensing as a Reiki Master and bodyworker when situationally appropriate. I am a professional artist and art teacher in Pacific Heights dedicated to giving people of all ages the artistic skills they need to express themselves and find the power of their own voices. I also welcome art commissions of all kinds. Give the gift of connection. Give art.

What do you love about your job?

What I love about my job the most is to see my clients succeed. Whether success for them is learning one whole song, or even just being able to play or sing a couple of measures that they couldn't before, is a very rewarding experience for me. I am blessed to experience that every day. I can say that I am blessed to live in the city I love and do what I also love and most passionate about; music.

Who or what inspired you to start your business?

I worked for many companies in the past teaching music from LA Phil, Guitar Center, Take Lessons and all of them had something great to offer; something good to bring to the table. But I always felt that I could offer my clients more if I could have the power to tailor each lesson to my client’s needs. Yes, I have a curriculum and my goal is to meet and complete that curriculum, but not at the expense of my client’s goals. As a professional musician and music teacher, I know music like the back of my hand but I always try to learn new ways to pass on that knowledge and I am willing to listen to what my clients need and want in order to help them reach their goals.
