Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

What is the best roofing material?

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a roofer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a roofer, choose virtual platforms like video chats instead of face-to-face consultations. When the roofer is working on your roof, avoid any physical contact, sanitize all involved spaces and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Price, Performance, Perfection! J&M Roofing is a family-owned company with over 40 years’ experience in roofing. They specialize in both residential and commercial. I received four bids for my home in San Gabriel, and I finally approved the winning bid by J&M Roofing. I was very hesitant to do a new roof due to the fact it would be so costly. Jose, the owner of J&M Roofing, assured me that his company could do an excellent job at a very reasonable price. From the very first phone conversation, Jose was helpful and professional. He was able to meet with us the next day and began to replace our 40-year-old, wood shake roof. This required new particle board since there were only slats under two layers of wood shake. His team did a wonderful job of installing a new, Corning Cool Roof, asphalt shingles, new vents, drain spouts, and replaced wood facing where necessary, new gutters and metal strips as trim. They did not hesitate to take on additional work, such as trimming the trees overhanging the roof. They did an immaculate job of cleaning the work site. The roof looks fabulous! J&M Roofing went beyond my expectations, including going to the County Public Works Department with me to get approval for the color of the roof, since new colors and reflective surfaces are now required by Los Angeles County. The J&M Roofing team was prompt, on schedule, courteous, and remained in constant contact with us during the entire project. They overtook a very difficult task of removing a 40-year roof and installing particle board and asphalt shingles in less than six days. They were responsible in all their actions. I would not hesitate to use J&M Roofing in any future project. Thank you so much, Jose and your outstanding team, for your diligence and fine work. Sincerely, John Teressi

I got 4 quotes from thumbtack contractors. All of them quoted about the same range of $26,000. Economy came in under $17,000. What?!?! Why the huge discrepancy? Art Gaxiola provided two references and after calling them, both were ecstatic about the value and service they received. They too mentioned the other contractors who were quoting higher amounts. I checked with my friend who is a contractor and he said the fair range for my roof should fall between $18-20K. This other estimates were also highly rated but were charging $8K more for the identical product and service! If I stopped at 3 estimates, I would have never found Economy Roofing and would have spend $8K more than I wanted to. Economy roofing and Art are not out to gouge customers. Everyone has the right to a fair profit but Art is truly fair and respects customers especially in these trying times. Art is responsive, communicates well, always available and not defensive when you have questions. Personally I am very particular and set high expectations often I cannot even meet my own. His crew were courteous, respectful and did a good job cleaning up. Of course no one is 100% and I did my own cleaning after they left. I will be telling my family and friends to use Economy Roofing. The roofer I normally use retired after falling off the roof for the last time so it was a journey finding a company that I could trust.

He never finished the job he started. Finished 3 quarters of the roofing and never came back to paint the eaves. Said he was running to Home Depot to match the colors and then disappeared, even leaving equipment behind. Never responded to any subsequent calls.
