Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

I called Nicholas for humidity issues in my house. However, i knew that he was an electrician, but i wanted to get an opinion about changing the bathroom fans. He was very clear in his communication and came on time. He was very honest and told me to contact HVAC company as he didn’t think upgrading the bathroom fans will help. I really liked his honesty and if i ever decide to hire an electrician, it will be Nicholas. Thanks.

Very rude unprofessional! He replies to install bathroom fan and then when I say electrical is already run and only needs the fan installed so how much is it now that the electrical is done? He says I’m an electrician. “I don’t install ducts, I’m an electrician”. Ok so how the hell do you install a bathroom fan properly without knowing how to install the ducts? Why do you even reply if you can’t read my details!?

There panel upgrade was horrible.... they almost burnt down our house by the shotty work they did. Had other electrician inspect work and they were appalled and we’re surprised that my house did not catch fire.... never solved the initial problem and they ruined our new roof and concrete.

I had a very pleasant experience with the electrician, Nicholas Vinson. He came to fix a burnt electric outlet and I could tell, he was knowledgeable and certainly knew what he was doing. Don't be deceived by his youthful look, since he accumulated many years of experience working as an electrician. Surprisingly, he was able to come out the same exact day I contacted him. It was jiffy, to say the least. I asked him if he does other projects and he stated the estimate is always free, so I would highly recommend anyone needing electric work to consult him because his rates are below other contractors, but best of all, he did the work perfectly. Two thumbs up!!!

Michael arrived on time with all the tools and equipment needed to do the job. I was able to verify his electrician's license which came in handy when he found some existing wiring that was not up to code and posed a safety hazard. Michael quickly fixed the problem and completed the rest of the work at no additional charge. I am very satisfied with his work.

I had a previous electrician come a week prior to calling Craig, that individual could not figure out the problem and didnt even bother to give me an estmate or relate to me what I could do to resolve my problem. Craig came out gave me a quote. He explained to me what issues he was facing (not an easy task) and he said he could fix my electrical disaster. He was fantastic! He had the job done in a few hours and the cost was very reasonable. I will recommend him to everyone and hire him for all future projects that may arise. Thank you Craig, you are awesome!!

First time with Thumbtack, my experience with Hessam is pleasantly positive. I live in a rented old house, need to charge my new PHEV at home, garage gives 2-prong outlet, charger refuses to work when it doesn't detect the ground line. Communication with Hessam is excellent, he understands the job and knows what he's doing. More importantly when the initial plan doesn't work as I imaged, his experience and willing-to-try attitude greatly helped and saved me hundred of bucks potentially. Truly appreciate what Hessam done for me last Saturday morning. Now Hessam becomes my go-to electrician, highly recommended to everyone !!

I am a picky reviewer. But I found Juan systematic, punctual and professional. Juan is willing to work with you and understands your preferences and provides best advices and options accordingly. He didn’t come in with “I get it all, will do it my way” attitude unlike others. I used to prefer another good Electrician but working with Juan is better. Juan worked around my schedule and did a job better than I had wished. Also I landed up having a car problem and he gave me a ride to my work as courtesy. 👍🏼 Juan guarantees his work for 1-2 years and plans to change my fuses as courtesy whenever I will need that.

This is a review of Jonathan's customer service and professionalism. An appt. with Jonathan was scheduled for 4/15/20 at 10 a.m. He never showed up and didn't call. I contacted him after 11 a.m. and he said he was busy. I reminded him he needed to call and not just be a "no show." He wanted to reschedule so we booked it again for 4/16/20 at 10 a.m. I reminded him of the importance of keeping appointments. I have a busy schedule. But, again, today the 16th, he was a "no show." I left voice and text messages. As an aside, when we talked yesterday, I also told Jonathan I couldn't find his electrician licence as listed as verified on Thumbtack. There's also a discrepancy between his name, which he says is Merz and the license name listed on Thumbtack. Also the license number inputted into the CA Contractor's site says the number doesn't exist. When asked about it, he said he was a journeyman. I was never able to verify his license. Then I asked him about having liability insurance, which I would expect any professional to have. He never confirmed if he did but understood why I said liability insurance was important, especially for electrical repairs. So after he didn't show today, he wrote me these emails, ver batim. ME: It's 10:48 a.m. We had a 10 a.m. appt. RU coming or not? Jonathan: No I can't make it sorry ME: You had 2 chances to keep your appointment and didn't call either time and didn't show up. You'll be getting a bad review as a result. Jonathan: Dude I haven't even start work for u and ur trying ask me for insurance I don't have any the moment so if I mess something up I. your house I don't have any way of paying For it. Find another electrician. I don't work with bad customers like you. So, in summary, I don't know what Jonathan's real name is and if he actually has an electrician's license. Secondly, he stood me up two days in a row. Third, he does NOT have liability insurance Fourth, if you question him about it, he says you're a "bad customer." He may do excellent work, I don't know, but I question who he is; what licenses, if any, he has; that he does not have liability coverage; and lastly, that he's irresponsible about keeping appointments. He never called to say he would be late or that he was not showing up at all. UPDATE: 07/23/20 Rather than take responsibility for his actions, Jonathan has chose to refute my review. Be advised, everything in my review is truthful and correct. I have text messages to prove it and the conversation was taken "ver batim" from my cellphone. Again, this is not a review of his electrical expertise. He never showed up. But it is a review of his customer service (or lack thereof) and his attitude toward a potential customer whom he stood up, twice, didn't call, and they called me a "bad customer." Please, check out his licenses and insurance. None checked out for me with the licensing board and he admitted he did not have any insurance.

I don’t like giving negative reviews, but I reached out to talk about my experience with them and did not get a response. The two brothers who came to do my electrical repair were very friendly, but it was pretty evident that their equipment was not good and their methods not efficient. Because of this, it took them 2.5 hours to diagnose my problem ($450) and during that time they changed their mind about the problem several times. Each of their meters read something different and lots of time was wasted in their scattered approach to finding the problem. A PG&E electrician came over the next day with quality equipment and basically said that most of what these guys did was wrong - probably based on bad readings from their equipment. Problem not solved all the way, but they charged me $450. Not very happy with the service for the price. I don’t mind them taking their time trouble shooting and trying to see which of their meters work best, but disappointed that they charged me full price for a job half done, where it was obviously slowed drastically by the bad equipment and lack of alignment between the brothers.
