Dr. John McGrail is truly wonderful and amazing!!! I attempted to stop smoking on my own, but was unsuccessful because of the level of anxiety I would experience each time. I started researching online in order to find different methods of breaking this addition. I came across several online articles where Dr. McGrail had commented in regards to how hypnotherapy can assist in quitting smoking by changing the way the mind perceives it. I decided to call and discuss this matter with him as I was a bit skeptical. I was very pleased and impressed from the moment I spoke to Dr. McGrail as he truly took the time to answer all of my questions and concerns. Because of his professionalism and level of compassion, I made an appointment with him and became a nonsmoker within a week after one session. Given that I had never been to a hypnotherapist, I can say that the entire process was very relaxing and enjoyable. I also greatly appreciated the fact that Dr. McGrail followed up with me from time to time in order to check on my progress. If I knew quitting could be this easy, I would have stopped years ago. It has now been a little over a month and I do not know why I ever smoked and am actually handling stress a lot better than I ever did as a smoker. Thank you very much Dr. McGrail for helping me through this journey.

"When I first called Susan I felt like my life was so toxic that I would die. I Susan helped me to zero in on how the toxicity in my life: alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and general negative thinking were not my fault but neither was I powerless to overcome them. Susan helped me to see the how these behaviors stemmed from the trauma I lived through as a child and that I could rise above them by understanding the reasons why I hid behind the alcohol. As I came to understand these connections, I was able to acknowledge and accept the behaviors without blaming myself. The hypnosis we did made it so much easier to find that inner peace and self acceptance that the need to drink and smoke seemed to melt away without effort. I was able to stop drinking for the first time since I was 15 years old. I also quit smoking. I learned to use self-hypnosis to reinforce and recreate this calmness when needed so that the cravings disappeared.. Susan taught me how to love and accept myself as I was. That I had worth and value.. She taught me how to have compassion and understanding for myself so that I could begin to lay a new foundation for healthy self-regard. I learned the how to take care of myself and my own emotional needs instead of draining myself by constant people pleasing. I felt instantly connected with Susan as she shared her own journey in this battle of drowning self-hatred in alcohol and how she found her own inner peace. I felt she understood me and that helped me to accept and love myself. The compassion she showed me enabled me to have compassion for myself. It was as if she walked alongside me on my journey. I felt heard, acknowledged, understood and accepted for the first time in my life. My thinking began to change. I saw reality more clearly and without self-judgement. I remember it was like a lightening bolt hit me when I realized I could make choices about alcohol, my mind and way of thinking. It became easy make better choices and easier to forgive myself when I made a mistake. I found myself more able to pause and think before jumping into familiar self-destructive situations. I learned how the emotional side of the brain and the logical brain worked in my behavior. I learned how the emotional brain could disconnect from the logical brain and cause me to operate on raw emotion. As I learned about that phenomena called Emotional Hijacking so that I could navigate back to logic when emotion took over. I learned was meant by the saying "when the student is ready the teacher arrives". I was ready and thank God I found her. "

Do yourself a favor and go see Brian. He was recommended to me by a good friend. I never thought anybody could get me out of the deep dark hole I was stuck in but even at the end of the first session I walked away feeling euphoric because I knew I would be able to find balance and happiness again. I was smiling in my car on the drive home. It was unbelievable. Life changing. After each session there is some kind of breakthrough. Brian is able to cut through the issue and help you find the root of the feeling that you never knew existed. It is a freeing experience. This is how life change takes place. At first, the hypnotherapy part made me nervous but actually there is nothing scary about hypnotherapy. You are still very aware, however it helps you go deeper into your own mind. It is the perfect way to end the session and probably crucial in helping the session have a lasting affect. Brian has a gift for helping people and he genuinely cares. He is a rare find. If you want to help yourself see Brian. You won't find anyone better. Thank you so much Brian!!!

Phyllis used a number of techniques such as guided meditation and hypnosis to help me focus and realize my goals. After our sessions I felt relaxed and filled with positive insights which made it possible for me to see a path forward. Sometimes all that is needed is for someone to remove the blindfold you have gotten used to wearing.

debra cucci is masterful in her field. i have had the most wonderful and positive experience with hypnosis that debra facilitated. i orginally contacted debra regarding a swallowing issue that had escalated to a point where i was in tremendous fear. after ONE session (which i went into doubtful that i could even enter a hypnotic state), my fear subsided considerably (i felt 80% "recovered"), and by the third session i was back to feeling myself. words cannot adequately describe the experience i have each time debra has worked her hypnosis magic with me. besides being accomplished in the area of hypnosis (she really knows her stuff), debra is a wonderful person to just sit and talk with. always welcoming and kind. it is reassuring to know that this gentle and peaceful intervention with a highly skilled and artful hypnotherapist is available whenever needed. thank you, debra!

I was quite skeptical about the benefits of hypnotherapy, but I desperately wanted to quit smoking without the use of drugs or nicotine patches. I heard about Jeremy through a friend and thought I would give hypnosis a try. Jeremy gave me good advice on how to manage my stress and control cravings. I was surprised that within a few sessions I was able to cope much better with stress and actually quit. It's been 7 months since I had my last cigarette. Jeremy's methods were very effective and within minutes I felt comfortable with his personality, making him easy to work with. I highly recommend Jeremy for someone looking for a way to manage stress in a healthier way and deal with bad habits.

I 1000% thought that hypnosis was a load of bull until I actually tried it. I went to Greg when his business was still based in San Francisco and he was extremely kind and made me feel very comfortable right away. Since doing the quit smoking hypnosis therapy I haven't had any urges to pick up a pack of cigarettes. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

"I was looking for a Life-Coach / Hypnotherapist with an NLP background and I must say that NLP Master Practitioner Charles did not disappoint me! He has a thorough knowledge of all the various NLP techniques, and most importantly knows how to apply them in the most effortless and telling way. My mind was a mess but after a couple of sessions with Charles I felt clear and focused and most importantly for the first time in ages I had control over my thoughts. They didn't control me! If you're not quite sure where to turn, then I absolutely recommend Charles if you're looking for a fresh start, a pick-up or a new direction."

If you want to make a change from the inside out, go see Brice. I used to think that I would never be able to quit smoking (1 pack a day for 16 years) but I did it in just 3 sessions with Brice. It's now been 5 months and 7 days and I can't tell you how much I love letting my hair down and it still smells like shampoo! Brice is a master at understanding the forces that shape our behavior and prevent us from achieving our goals. He truly cares about his clients and his voice alone makes you feel comfortable and at home. My first go-round with hypnotherapy and I can't imagine going to anyone else. Highly, highly recommend!

As children, we are very impressionable, open to suggestion and receptive to our surroundings. We accept almost anything that people around us do and say through a default process of our brain called “association.” This is how we learn from infancy -- we identify, we associate, and then we respond. The first 8 years of life forms a blueprint for our future. As we get older, we continue to react and behave in similar ways as in our first 8 years of childhood. This stage impressesthe subconscious mind which is a total of 88% of our brain’s power. As we continue to mature, we develop logic, reasoning, analyzing, decision-making and will power, which makes up 12% of our mind’s power. Everywhere you look, you can see people facing so many difficulties and challenges every day. They want to have an ideal body weight make lots of money enjoy successful relationships, happiness, stop bad habits, maintain good health, and find the motivation to achieve many other goals. When you realize that 88% of yoursubconscious mind is a lot more powerful than 12% of conscious mind, then you can see why only wanting or hoping for something is often not enough. Sometimes we experience upheavals in our lives that we don’t know how to deal with. It’s important that we have someone we can talk with in times of crisis and stress. The way that you take a shower to clean your body is the same way you need to clean your mind every now and then. Your stress, tension, fears and phobias can mount up and turn into anxiety and depression that can paralyze you so you cannot feel or act in a positive manner. It’s time to take control of your life with a safe therapy that has no unwanted or dangerous side-effects. Hypnotherapy is such an effective therapy that in September of 1958 theAmerican Medical Association approved hypnosis as a safe practice with no harmful side effects. Clients achieve noticeable results in a very short time as compared to other healing methods.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

        • Irritable bowel syndrome
        • Tension headaches
        • Alopecia areata
        • Asthma
        • Phobias
        • Insomnia
        • Addictions
        • Bedwetting
        • Fibromyalgia
        • Labor and delivery
        • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
        • Stress
        • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
        • Cancer-related pain
        • Weight loss
        • Eating disorders
        • Warts
        • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
        • Post-traumatic stress disorder
        • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
