Alex and George were my movers and they were great! They handled everything with great care. My only disappointment was their arrival time. I was given an eta of 2 to 5 pm and they showed up at 5 pm which was quite late to start moving. I'd recommend booking a morning time slot with them.

The guys were all great! Showed up on time, moved ALL my stuff so quickly and safely. I’ve used other movers before and it seemed like every piece of furniture was damaged but not today! Moved all my heavy objects without issue and even assembled the bed frame without me asking so by the time they left everything was where I needed it. Would definitely recommend them and use them again!

Pavel and his guys SAVED the day!! Because of his amazing crew, I did not have to take a day off from work to move when another moving company screwed us over. Well, I am sad to report that another moving company booked through Thumbtack cancelled on us at 7:30 AM on the morning of the move. Initially stressed out, we ended up lucking out with Leclair Moving. Pavel answered the call at 10 AM offered us a a cash flat rate for 2-3 guys and completed the work in less time (4 hours including driving and breaks) than the other company had quoted us. We couldn't believe it. We saved time and money. The main challenge was that they were a few hours later than promised. However, given that they squeezed us in at the end of a long hard day, we were very grateful that they helped us out. Another difference that my girlfriend noticed is that they were a little bit short on the typical accoutrements of moving companies (wardrobe boxes, moving blankets). Thus, some of the items were not wrapped as much as she was used to. However, that did not matter a lick to me because all my furniture showed up in excellent condition. They helped me arrange the furniture in the new place, which my girlfriend was really grateful for. They worked really hard at both ends (two flights of stairs on either side!) We gave them a $100 tip for their commitment and professional execution of the job.

Hired 3 movers for 2 hours. To start with, they reached on time, after giving us a heads up about 30 mins in advance. We had hired them to move primarily the big items to another apartment within the same community and wanted them to be done in 2 hrs. Once they arrived and the paper work was done, we showed them the items they had to move (including dissembling and assembling). They were quite fast with their work and wrapped everything carefully. They completed the move on time too, and moved additional items as well (smaller items). I would recommend their services to others.

Main Movers were absolutely awesome! The 3-man team had very positive attitudes towards a pretty huge job that expanded as they not only loaded our main house and 2 cottages/offices, but also at last minutes notice they brought all boxes down from our attic. This was a HUGE job! They never complained and were super quick and courteous. When I made several requests, they replied reassuringly by telling me to "have no worries." They were super well-skilled at disassembling large furniture (a bunk bed in particular for us) and keeping all necessary parts organized and attached so we could reassemble the furniture upon arrival at our new home. I can't give them enough praise. Julian had said they would stay as long as it took to get the job done and they sure did. I highly recommend Main Movers!!! Thanks so much guys!!!

These guys were very friendly and helpful. The moved our junk out very quickly. It was a bit pricey when you compare value to all the work our apartment movers did for us recently, but it was worth it because they came at short notice even though they'd clearly had a long day. Would recommend them to others.

I hired MP Movers (Marquiz) to assemble a 6 drawer IKEA dresser. He arrived right on time and was very polite. The dresser came in 3 different boxes which had to be moved downstairs to my daughter's room, which he did for me. He was so conscientious that at one point the instructions didn't match the materials and he brought this to my attention. He quoted me a flat fee and stuck to that. All in all, I couldn't have been happier and I will definitely hire MP Movers again. I highly recommend Marquiz and MP Movers.

I give Pratt's Trucking a 9.5! As a Realtor, I sometimes stage my own listings. I hired Billy Pratt of Pratt Trucking to "de-stage" a listing. I was deeply impressed with the level of care he took with my beautiful furniture. He wrapped all pieces in shrink wrap as we were storing it in a very dusty warehouse. He was polite, hardworking and on time. Billy's rates are competitive. I appreciated that he took the time to do the job correctly, and did not cut any corners. Yes, there are others out there who are faster, but they tend to damage my expensive staging furniture. I want a careful mover. I have also seen Pratt's assemble furniture from IKEA at a client's home. They lay all the pieces out on moving pads so your furniture is assembled without a scratch and is assembled correctly. Why squander your valuable weekend assembling that annoying IKEA furniture when you can just hire Pratts? They will do a better job than you, and you won't have a sore back! They also deliver it!

I got two notifications (one text, One call) letting me know their ETA in advance. The movers were friendly, professional, and efficient. They packed my belongings with care and were very thorough in explaining everything I needed to know. Great experience!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
