Elena K. says, "We hired Sami & Sons to do a big deck remodeling project. They were highly recommended to us by our neighbors who were very happy with their work. The Scope of our work was such as we had to completely demolish existing deck and arches, rebuild Everything from scratch, add lighting, add glass railing, replace the entire siding on one side of the house and change the supporting beams on one part of the house. I met with the owner, Sami, who is a very knowledgeable, professional and a pleasant person in general. After talking to him, I had a sense that I will be in good hands if I worked with him and his company and that he is trustworthy and a man of his word. He did not disappoint! He delivered on everything that he promised and even more. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. What I also really liked about working with this company is that everyone was immediately accessible by phone! I could call Sami or one of the project managers (Shai or Anthony who both are the most pleasant, polite and professional young men to work with) and someone is always always always there to answer or respond by a text message. The longest I ever had to wait was 30 min for a response. This is very impressive and it is important considering a lot of my neighbors complained that their contractors are impossible to get a hold of. I also wanted to address some complaints some people in previous reviews had about workers leaving garbage or not always showing up every day. Yes, it is irritating and yes, I had the same issues but let me tell you that these are things that just come up during big remodels. Everything will not be smooth, you may get a few bumps in the road. This is normal. What is really important here is how The Contractor responds to your issues and concerns. In my experience, when I brought up an issue (and they were very small), it was remedied right away, no questions asked. I would call Sami or my project manager and I would say, hey there is garbage here and I want it out and the response would be “No problem, it will be removed tomorrow.” And it was! So if you have anything of a concern just bring it up and they will always take care of it right away. They really try to do the right thing. And that’s what matters! Finally, I am happy how my deck turned out. It is gorgeous! Thank you Sami & Sons. It was a pleasure working with you and I would highly recommend you!"See more

Sabby N. says, "We engaged NT Bay area construction to help renovate our home. We remodeled our guest bathroom and also expanded/remodeled our Master bathroom. In addition, we replaced the electrical panel, had our HVAC moved into the attic and reconfigured a few closets to open into different rooms. Our experience was very positive from the get go. Unlike several contractors we spoke to during the selection process, we found NT Bay area and Nash to be highly responsive. He was easy to communicate with and during the initial walk through made a couple suggestions that actually helped make the plan better. He was able to connect us with a good structural engineer and stayed in communication with us throughout the permit process. Once the construction began, we found him to be reliable and his crew was trustworthy as well when we had to leave the home unattended. Nash conducted regular video calls with us when we had to travel away from the area to keep us updated on the progress. The crew did a good job in being detail oriented especially in the bathrooms. They were flexible when we wanted to make minor cosmetic changes and got the job done much to our satisfaction. I would definitely give Nash and his crew two thumbs up and will use them in the future if we ever need to renovate again! Here are a few before and after pictures."See more

Christy S. says, "My husband & I met with Alan from Ibuilders design and build. The company was referred to us by one of our friends, who is currently having his home renovated by them. We've been looking to renovate the master bathroom, and guest bathroom. A live person picked up immediately! The lady who answered was very nice and asked the right questions. Alan was timely, wore a mask, was extremely pleasant and very professional to work with. He took the time to see the bathrooms we needed to remodel, asked what is important for us to be in the renovated bathrooms, and gave us great ideas. He made both my husband and I feel very comfortable. Everything went above and beyond. The process went so smooth and finished in the time frame that was assigned. We love our new bathrooms! Thank you, Alan."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.
