Michelle is a warm and inviting person who made me feel comfortable very quickly. She has been a great mentor and helped me overcome many obstacles in the aftermath of a serious life event I experienced. I felt I could be me without any concern for fear of how she may react. I have done traditional therapy but have preferred her holistic approach to combining therapy with a goal oriented approach to solving problems one may be experiencing. I have been able to get to a much better place in my life thanks to her support and the perspective she helps me obtain through self reflection. She encourages you just enough to help you push past your self-set limits without ever feeling like she is pushing you past your boundaries. Somehow, I always get to the realization I need on my own terms but with the help of her encouragement. I love her approach and feel that her respectful manner along with her warm, understanding attitude creates a space for one to really get down to one's core and find one's self in the process. She has truly been a gift to my life.

I would recommend Cristi! I was skeptical about starting therapy, but Cristi made me feel comfortable the moment I walked in her office. She listened to my issues without being judgmental and she offered several suggestions on ways I can work to improve things. She also made me laugh and I never thought that would happen in therapy! I feel like I can trust Cristi and I plan to keep working with her.

Taylor is the ultimate Pop Music Producer! He understands every kind of Top 40/Hit Music/Swedish Pop music which is why I chose him for my project. This is a professional you will be working with. He works faster on Pro Tools than I can keep up with my eyes, and I'm a Pro Tools 10 user myself. If you are looking for a HIT SONG, this is the man you need to contact. I have worked with many producers across the country, & he is the opposite than a lot of others. A lot of other producers do NOT like to always be told different ideas and directions, because it takes up their time. Taylor encourages talk within the project at all times. He always says it's the little things that can make a song huge- so speak up! THIS IS KEY to having a song that's not only a hit, but a hit in which you feel comfortable to sing live. I can't say I WOULD go back to him, because I already AM back in the studio working on the next project! :) Taylor is embracing of any styles/flares you prefer your music to have, so let the imagination go crazy while he starts exploring any direction or fusion of directions in music you like, because he will ultimately transfer a "crazy idea" into something radio friendly. I'm a very straightforward person who needs my music mixed/produced professionally, yet kindly with a personality too, in order to make me feel non-vulnerable while recording. Taylor is the ultimate in laid-back and friendly- with a genuine kindness to the table that can't be faked or authenticated. This implies passion within his work, and it shows. Book him yourself to find out, I'm glad I did, have no regrets whatsoever and highly advise people who want to fast-track their pop careers to contact him immediately to have him start working magic.

Kim is such a wonderful kind and caring therapist she took her time to get to know me and ask questions about me so that I may get the full benefit of the therapy. She wrote a program that was tailored to me and what I wanted to accomplish. I came in and out of hypnosis 2x. She is so positive and it was easy to talk to her. Will be going back to her. If you have a problem I recommend you see her you will see a difference in your first session.

I am very happy with the services that I received from Dr. Murray S. Kaufman. The first time that I visited him I literally was a mess. I was dealing with IBS, and the condition was killing me because I didn't know how to live with it. I went to see Dr. Kaufman with the intention to receive a hypnosis protocol for IBS. I started the protocol; however, the doctor realized that I was suffering from anxiety disorder that was making the IBS flare up, and I started a therapy to work on that. Dr. Kaufman helped me to find the roots of my anxiety and how to deal with them. Every session was very productive, and I learned a lot about myself and dealing with my conditions. Now, I am in a much better place in life, and so thankful to Dr. Kaufman, because he helped me to overcome one of the darkest moments of my life. He is very knowledgeable, dedicated and professional. I recommend him from my heart to yours.

I highly recommend Miss Briscoe to anyone seeking a good hypnotherapist! I only went in for a single session of self-discovery, but came out so much more enlightened and at peace with myself. Miss Briscoe is incredibly professional and works hard before, during, and after the actual trance to ensure that you benefit as much as possible from your therapy, and she truly cares about her clients. Whether you go in once like I did for a single self-discovery session or continually for a chronic problem, you will not regret choosing Miss Briscoe.

AG is a relationship expert! I personally trust no one else with my sensitive topics about love and communication. Coaching is NOT therapy and Coach AG does a wonderful job at defining the two. She creates a welcoming environment for my partner and I to openly express our thoughts about our love life, friendship and overall happiness levels with each other. My love life has flourished and the relationship with my employees has also improved; thanks to her encouraging communication techniques. I would recommend AG's Relationship and Sexuality coaching to individuals who have skepticism about life coaches and relationship gurus; her expertise will set even the shyest and most obstinate communicator at ease.

About

Are you worried about your child or teenager? Is he or she struggling socially or academically? Does he isolate in his room with the door shut, or cry more than you would expect? Growing up can be tough these days, and some kids and teens need just a little bit of extra guidance to help them through these years. This is where I can help. I have experience working as a school-based counselor as well as with challenging populations such as children with behavioral issues and on the autism spectrum. I use behavioral modification techniques to help your child improve on social skills, academic struggles, anxiety, overcoming bullying, and coping with major changes in the family, including divorce or any other significant loss such as that of a pet. I am a registered marriage and family therapist intern with a master's degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University. I may be younger than many of the other therapists you have looked into, but that is exactly the reason why I would be a great choice for your child or adolescent. My age helps me relate to and understand your child, which creates a better counseling environment. I am also fluent in Russian. I am available weekday evenings and weekends.

About

I believe that people basically know what they want, so I take the approach that each client is an expert on herself or himself. My role in your journey is to help you identify and remove obstacles on the road towards developing a stronger sense of self, as well as a more clear vision of what "success" means to you. Helping people realize that most of our behaviors are learned and were appropriate at some other point in our lives. That pattern was probably functional at the time, but is no longer serving you as it once did. Changing our lives for the better, therefore, can come down to simply learning new and more adaptive behaviors to cope with every day situations.

About

I am offering tutoring, behavior therapy and socialization skills for all individuals/children/people with special needs. I am experienced.

About

We offer autism integrative therapies. We do individual therapies in ABA, Discrete Trial Training (DTT), positive behavior support, parent support and training, social skills training, parent education, and training in home and school.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
