Dave Foster primarily tutored my home schooled daughter extensively in pre-calculus, but also provided some SAT prep. Essentially, he was her math teacher for a year. Although my daughter is a good student, she previously did not like math at all and she had some trouble grasping higher level concepts, such as logarithms. By the end of their time together, Kate not only had a firm understanding of the material, but she also developed a liking for a previously detested subject. Her SAT scores improved significantly, and when she took a higher level math course at our local college, Kate was at the top of her class. I firmly believe Dave's teaching gave her a firm foundation to succeed at this next level. Always cheerful, patient, encouraging, and willing to go the extra mile, Dave has a heart for his students and a gift for teaching. We will definitely call on Dave again, if the need arises.

Dave helped supplement my calculus 3 course and he is very knowledgeable in this advanced subject. I have had four tutoring sessions with him so far and will continue to have them with him till the end of the semester. What went well is that he is very clear in his descriptions of the subject matter that we are describing, and as we go over examples he clearly sees mistakes that I make.

Triton tutoring specializes in one-on-one, in-home math tutoring. Unlike most "tutoring" services, our career tutors do things the right way: Our tutors will tailor lessons to the students' learning style and individual needs, utilizing proven techniques to facilitate deep understanding of the concepts required. Students turn to tutoring because they can't understand math in the context of a lecture format, where the instructor attempts to impart knowledge through memorization. Our tutors focus on math SKILLS and avoid memorization all together! Students excel at learning when they DO the math, through structured trial and error, instead of just HEARING IT!

I wish to attain graduate degrees in Education and pursue a career in the field, so I have spent a great deal of time devoted to understanding learning styles and crafting specialized curriculum. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
