I am a general contractor who has used many flooring companies. These guys did all the wood laminate flooring on our multi unit project. I was really impressed with their ability to level the subfloor throughout the unit which was 1-1/2" out of level in some areas! They gave me an extremely reasonable rate and got the project complete in 2 days! I was really impressed with the outcome and would recommend them to anyone.

We hired Mike and Brandon at Top Knotch Flooring and Construction to re-tile our BBQ island. They were timely, reliable, and did a great job. They were detailed- oriented and took time completing the job. It's difficult to find contractors who will keep their word. Mike and Brandon did that for us.

We write this review here based on our great experience with Eyal at Excel Construction. Eyal’s vision for our new layout of the kitchen, worked out very well and was set within our price range. He spent several hours back and forth with us in order to understand us first and then to bring us the best design while walking us through the entire remodeling process from start to finish. All the people that worked at our house, were polite, quick, responsive, experts and focused. Combined all of that together, ended up with a terrific results. Each day the house was cleaned and organized before they left home. The complete remodeling took 5 weeks and it was fully worth the wait. They installed all the required appliances, hardware flooring, marble countertop, all the cabinets, backsplash, sink and faucet. Eyal who was the main supervisor on our project, replied to all of our questions and he made sure that each change or tweak will be done at no time. It was clear enough that their customer service and satisfaction was very important to Eyal and the crew. They left the new kitchen in a very high quality and workmanship. We would recommend them!

Mike is a miracle worker! He was able to get out same day of my request to get me an estimate. We were on such a tight timeline, I was really stressing out. He ordered the carpet and installed it two days later and it looks amazing. He saved my life and we may use him for the rest of the flooring in our property now that we're not on a time crunch.

I first met Brad Snapir in 2011 when we met to discuss adding a second story onto our house in West Los Angeles which included a master bedroom, large bath, two closets and an additional reading room in back of the bedroom. All in all we added around 900 feet or perhaps a little more. It took us many meetings over almost a year's time before my husband and I were ready and prepared to begin the building process. Throughout this whole time Brad was understanding, patient and excellent at offering suggestions as to our remodel and willing to spend hours and hours meeting with us. We began the remodel in September of 2012 and we were back in the house in March of 2013 which was extremely quick. Needless to say there were questions and problems which arose during the building process but my husband, Brad and I were always able to work out whatever the problem was to everyone's satisfaction. If something had to be altered or changed in any way, Brad did it and did it well. We were very happy with the outcome of the remodel and happily moved back into the house after only 6 months although everyone told us it would be a year at least. Well they were wrong. Brad and his crew did the work quickly and well. If anything was not done exactly as I wanted they fixed it to be the way I wanted. I so appreciated the work that when I decided to remodel my kitchen in 2015 I immediately called Brad for the job. He worked with me in designing what I needed and ordering the necessary appliances, tile and countertops. I absolutely love the kitchen and would change nothing. It is exactly what I had in mind. The one other thing I want to point out about Brad is that over the years I have had several very very small jobs at the house which Brad has been so willing to just send one or two or three of his guys in a most timely manner and get the small job done. This has been a god-send as we all know how difficult it is to get work done on small jobs. I would recommend Brad and his company to anyone who wants a remodel large or small done and done well. The guys at Rite-A-Way Flooring did a fantastic job at my dad's house. Victor and his team are very detailed oriented and extremely professional. They provided a great service for me at my dad's house while he was away in the hospital. It was a very hectic time for my family and I and Victor was able to navigate around the scheduling problems I had due to the medical issues my dad had. When all was said and done, the job that Rite-A-Way Flooring did for us far exceeded our expectations. We are so happy with the job that Victor and his crew did that we are currently in the process of having them come back out to do some extensive exterior work on my dad's house too. I must mention that during the 1st contract with Victor I had a couple of other issues come up outside the scope of what their contract was for and he put me in contact with someone he highly recommend to fix some wiring issues that I had. They came out while Victor and his crew were still working and completed the wiring job without interfering with the current work going on. They also did a fantastic job for a great price in a timely manner. For any future work I have that needs done on any home I will go to Victor at Rite-A-Way Flooring

There were some hiccups at the beginning, so the project took longer to finish. However, Robert did a good job on our guest room's laminate flooring. He is friendly, too. I will hire him again if I have a project near Downey.

We are very pleased with our home remodel done by JC Builders & Design! Joe and his team completed all new flooring, paint, light fixtures, baseboards, and installation of 5 ceiling fans. All finished work is of highest quality. JC Builders & Design responded quickly to all inquiries, and were very thorough. Work progressed steadily from day 1, and the whole project was completed on time. We even added a couple of items, and those were also completed on time. We love our "new" house and recommend JC Builder & Design to all of of our neighbors and friends.

Ramon was friendly yet professional when he visited to see what the job entailed. (Sanding and staining areas of wood floor damaged across 2 rooms and trying to blend them in with existing flooring.). He followed through with appointment date and written estimate. His workers knew what they were doing and surprised me with a result that exceeded my expectations. Ramon stopped by while work was in process to make sure all was going well. When he realized the work would be completed earlier than expected he had his workers tackle other areas not included in estimate to improve overall quality of the floors. I was thrilled at how they had blended the new with old so well. Ugly stains gone! I recommend this company wholeheartedly.

Luka and his team are incredible! I had him refinish the concrete floor at my new business location and it looks fantastic. Originally I just wanted someone to buff it out, fill patches and put a nice, clear sealent coat on it. Luka agreed but once he got into the space he saw that the job needed more than that to look it’s best. He ground the floor down, restained it, filled patches and then gave it a nice glossy coat. It’s a brand new floor! His bid was extremely fair especially given the fact that he did a lot of extra work to bring the space up to his high standards. Look no further if you are looking for an honest, professional flooring company who produces exceptional work.

Alfred's team was great to work with. They were quick and professional and were amenable to changes we had. He initially said the floors would take 4 days and the team only needed 3. Would recommend him and his team for any floor install needs! We had nasty carpet and laminate throughout the house and the new floors look amazing!

Gerardo and his team have been super proficient, they did an excellent job at refinishing our 100-year old hardwood floors. Not only they meticulously fixed some sanding grooves we accidentally made when trying to sand the floor ourselves, but they also provided us with another stain which was a better fit than the one we initially bought. Their bid was also unbeatable. Bottomline is: Gerardo’s work is flawless and very reasonably priced, we strongly recommend!

JL Flooring has been managing the original maple floors in my home almost since I bought it 25 years ago. From the original restoration work necessary when we first bought the house to ongoing maintenance through the years of kids and pets, they always leave me with beautiful floors. The team has also installed hardwood floors in a couple rooms in the addition and they match the original flooring perfectly. It is all too rare to find the quality, value and responsiveness of JL Custom Flooring in this day and age. I cannot recommend Joe and his team highly enough. Call them. You'll be very glad you did.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
