Working with Alberto, I can see improvement and confidence quickly because he is focused on speaking and practicing as much Spanish with me as possible. My gauge on value is when my brain is exhausted from the concentration but the hour is up before I realize it. This is the experience I've had working with Alberto. Flashcards were used to practice conjugation drills in a fun and memorable way. Looking forward to more lessons!

My daughter Caroline has been going to Coastal Music Studios since January and really enjoys her voice lessons. She received a gift certificate for a series of lessons from her grandmother as a Christmas gift. Andy was really great at working with my mother long distance, connecting the two families (as we had both made inquiries) and getting the gift certificate out to my daughter by Christmas. We initially contacted Coastal Music as my daughter LOVES to sing in the car - and as a soccer family we spend a lot of time in the car! Sometimes the singing needed some help. After only 10 weeks of lessons, we can clearly hear a difference in my daughter's voice and enunciation. The singalong sessions are a lot of fun now and we get to appreciate Caroline's beautiful voice - who knows, Caroline may be referring me to singing lessons next!

I have taken lessons from Ed for about a month and I think he's an excellent teacher. I have been playing guitar for many years and taken lessons from several other teachers and Ed has me working on things that are helping me learn the theory that other teachers did not do. I find his approach very useful and it doesn't overwhelm. Plus he's willing to take the time to learn songs and solos that you want to learn, which adds an element of fun so you're not just learning and practicing theory and exercises. Ed is an excellent teacher, a nice guy, and a fun person to talk with. Highly recommended!

Omar is an excellent teacher, very patient and understanding. Lessons move quickly and I am learning both theory and application (piano). He also helped me decide on which piano to buy and what would be the most affordable options. I would greatly recommend taking lessons with him!

I took singing lessons with Sharon for a year, and I have to say it was one of the most rewarding experiences. I have a hectic schedule as I work full-time and i go to school full-time. Sharon was able to work with my busy schedule for weekly meetings, and she was able to work with my learning approach. She reads student's needs and personality really well and she knows what is the best approach to get you to understand the subject. When I started I literally knew nothing about music or singing. Everything I know today I owe to Sharon and her amazing teaching skills!

Ryan was referred to us by our neighbor whose daughters have been taking lessons with him. He has been an excellent choice thus far and my 5 year old is really happy with him (and she’s a bit particular at this age with respect to who she is comfortable with). I would highly recommend him.

Mark is an outstanding teacher. We have found him to be extremely professional and knowledgeable. Most importantly, his style of teaching resonates very well our daughter. Under Marks instruction, her abilities have elevated, and she has better comprehension of her music. She is enjoying her lessons and practice a great deal more. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone taking lessons from Mark.

I feel Jennifer and I have a great connection , we get along fabulously. She is a tremendously talented musician and singer (obviously ). Her abilities as a pianist and singer is equally matched by her ability to professionally yet pragmatically teach, mentor, tutor and guide one in the art of operatic singing. We have established goals. She is the epitome of promptness. I always look forward to my lessons with Jennifer. It is an honor to be her student . Sincerely - Dave

My children had music lessons with "Miss Lisa" for over ten years now, in both piano and voice. Now, she is even helping my young actress daughter with her audition monologues. She is a very gifted instructor, and is willing to step out of the box to encourage students and to develop their skills. Patient, kind, and thoughtful, she is nowhere near the "scary piano teacher" stereotype. We have followed her through several locations, and are excited for the new Encinitas Music Workshop. My daughter now has hour-long private voice lessons weekly, and still learns new things on a regular basic. At the new workshop space, there is also an opportunity for a break of pace with Guitar Hero, percussion learning, piano, and other musical pursuits.

I took both guitar and ukulele lesson from Kenny at the Ed Brown Center over a two year period, and found him a fine teacher. I learned a lot, and enjoyed my time in classes with him. He also formed us into a group to play for special occasions like July 4th. He's a good guy, loves teaching.

My 10 year old granddaughter had a wonderful first lesson with Amy Long! Miss Amy is talented and creative. Her enthusiasm is contagious! By using a variety of techniques including placing notes between bar lines on the floor, to naming all the notes on the keyboard, and figuring out basic melodies, we came away excited and looking forward to next week's lesson!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
