We had an incredible meal and a great night with Pete. We had good rapport and timely updates ahead of time. The food. THE FOOD. Local, seasonal, delicious, of course, but really rustic Italian flavors that reminded all of us of time in Italy. Pete himself is down to earth, witty, fun and eased right into conversation with our group. We're planning on making this girls trip annual and we'll book Pete every chance we get.

Incredible food. And Sat was very flexible with timing. We watched the Warriors game and Sat somehow timed it so the food was ready when we were and the food was perfect. I'll definitely use him again.

Debbie was great giving me options of menus. I ended up ordering off her American menu and it was fantastic. Debbie was there early and helped set up the food. Everyone at the banquet loved the food and asked me who the caterer. I will definitely be thinking of Debbie when planning my next event.

Planning for my wedding was stressful at times, but Aliki definitely made catering food from them easy. The process from tasting to the day of the wedding was smooth, and they took care of everything that we needed for us: table linens, servers, and drinks. Pretty much anything that you need done at the reception or related to food services they will handle it for you. They charge very fair and their food taste amazing!

I cannot begin to describe Stephanie without using the word "unbelievable." As part of our wedding day, I could not have imagined the food and catering going more smoothly. From the initial bid process, communication prior to the wedding, and meeting up to get familiar with the site, Stephanie was responsive, kind, and flexible. She listened and modified her menu according to changing needs, and wow we were pleased. Our menu had three food options (vegan, chicken, and tri-tip) and all were 100% incredible. She had the food timed to perfection, and presented beautifully. Our guests could not believe the quality of the food, especially given that she fed 73 people entirely on her own. So many of our guests were coming up to us to describe how amazing the food was!! We would recommend Stephanie to ANYONE who needs caterer. We were incredibly beyond happy and pleased with her work. She made our day all the more special as we did not have to worry about a thing from set-up to clean-up. You would be silly not to hire her for your catering needs.

We hired Quiche & Carry to drop off desserts for a party. The selection was amazing (cookies, bars, brownie bites, cupcakes etc). The food was pleasing to the eye and to the tummy - we received rave reviews of how delicious the desserts were. And, we had a lot left over so I brought them to the teachers lounge at my kids' school...2 days after our party, the teachers also had rave reviews. We will definitely use her for another party!

I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

Graham cooked for me at 10 year wedding anniversary which was outdoors at a private location in Stinson Beach on October 24, 2015. I met with Graham maybe a month before my event. I was very specific about everything I wanted for my special day. We had a few kids and a total of about 50 people so I wanted to make sure that he was a good fit for me and my guest of families. I did not want a fancy foie gras chef although I think Graham is in that league. I wanted someone who would cook a good meal and I wanted to be satisfied at the end of the day. Graham met with me and my mom and made us a sample from my Mediterranean menu. After spending a little time with Graham, I knew I wanted to hire him. He was charming and professional and his food was delicious. At my party he helped make my event go smoothly. He made 3 different salads, grilled chicken, salmon and beef kabobs for my lunch party. It was a beautiful day and my guest were so happy with the meal and also found Graham to be very charming! He is gem! Thank you so much Graham! I hope we can have you cook for us again in the future.

Rose Johnson & her entire crew were fantastic! We hired her for a 50th wedding anniversary party that we were hosting in our backyard for about 50x guests. She's great with communication - she was quick to get us a quote, a sample menu, and walk us through what she would need/suggest for the day of the event. She was very flexible, and easily accommodated my mother-in-law's low sodium diet requirement. Most importantly though, her food was wonderful! Her appetizers were plentiful, and the main course & sides were delicious. I was worried about having dried out food (as we were doing a buffet), but the food was cooked perfectly. She kept me on budget, and really, she went above & beyond what I expected from a caterer! Her staff were friendly with the guests, they helped pour drinks, set up chairs, and left my kitchen clean at the end of the night!! I would recommend her to others in a heartbeat!

Basic Catering supported our recent Oktoberfest racecar show event and they hit it out of the park! They were easy to work with and very thorough during the planning process. And the onsite team was on-time, very professional and the food was so fresh and delicious, prepared right on site. Can't wait to work with them again. We've give them 10 stars if we could!

Dennis and his team did an absolutely fantastic job hosting a bbq lunch for 145 guests in a local park. The team arrived on time (early, I think), they were attentive and responsive to my preferences, they brought everything (drinks, food, plates, cutlery, condiments, napkins) they prepared an amazing hot meal on site (burgers, mac-n-cheese, salad, beans) that exceeded expectations for food quality, they cleaned up everything (including managing a lot of guest's trash), they were relaxed and friendly. We could not have been happier with their services.

Best food, best cooks, and best people hands down! Excellent customer service, beautiful food presentation and working with them is a breeze. The Avocado team are so thoughtful and considerate and really took care of me and my fiancé. The team helped us create a menu and made sure we stayed within our budget, ordered enough food for everyone to eat, and so I was well beyond satisfied with everything. My wedding day was truly stunning and more then I really hoped for. Their floral, decor and food displays are so beautiful and everything looked like art! I was especially delighted with the Burrata Bar it was truly unique and delicious. Everyone at the wedding was floored by how beautiful and delicious everything was. I highly recommend them for any event!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
