Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Phillip found time in his day to come investigate several missing roof shingles that had left my roof completely exposed to winter elements. He and his staff had already climbed on the roof to look at it before I even arrived. He gave me a detailed estimate, acquired matching shingles and completed the work that day, did a great job exceeding the quality of the original roof, and communicated extremely well throughout. His prompt service, workmanship, and professionalism stood out as unusual of today's contractors. Thanks! I will call him without hesitation for any/all of my future roofing issues.

What the Hail roofing is more than just the best name for a Colorado roofing business ever, they are the fastest, most professional, contractors I’ve hired in many many years. They led us through the entire process from identifying the damage to our roof, helping with the insurance company process, choosing the right new shingles, and getting the permit from the city. They replaced our entire roof in one day! They even painted the ugly galvanized vents installed by a previous contractor to match the shingle color and cleaned up all of the shingle gravel around the house and in the garage - at no extra charge! Finally, they prepared the ladders and left notes for the inspection, which they also arranged. Start to finish, WTH roofing was awesome and I would recommend them for any roofing job you need, from small repair to total replacement.

AAC is a five star company start to finish! Karl and Logan did a free estimate for replacing the roof and painting my 1941 garage. They explained the process, gave a choice of high quality materials and were there throughout the project. Their roofing and painting crews were highly skilled, hard working and friendly. I’d use them again.

Phillip is the consummate professional- incredibly communicative & competent. We had already had our roof repaired once, or so we thought- the first roofing company we hired did a shoddy job & the leak actually got worse after they were done. Phillip came in & did an outstanding job. Not only did he have superior knowledge & the capability to fix the leak, he provided a 5 year warranty on his work & was a pleasure to work with.

The quality of the roof was terrific. The cleanup was great. The communication was exceptional. The only reason I detracted one star was that they had said they could do some facia, but it wasn't really their thing and didn't work out. Honestly, I'd give them 4 1/2 stars if I could. Terrific people and great service.

We live in a house with additions that were added (we suspect by do-it-yourself former owners) over a number of years, so I cringe whenever I have to have work done - there's no knowing what the construction people will find. This roofing project was no exception. Randy and his team took it in stride and still managed to get the job done on time and within our budget. In my mind, the true measure of the quality of a construction company is how they handle it when things go wrong and in this area, Mountaintop Construction shines! I most highly recommend Randy, Steve, and the rest of their crew - they did outstanding work and cleaned up so well after the job that you would never have known they were even there. You won't go wrong hiring Mountaintop Construction - they are good people.
