Needed tile done in my basement for a remodel underway and wanting to find someone that was not only able to help with that but other projects in the house. Forrest quickly proved that he was the man for this. He was always quick to respond and his team as well. They all did quality work for me and I'm pleased with quality of work. I'll be hiring him some more as more projects emerged. Even recommended him to some family members as well.

Steve and his team installed drywall in our basement. They were professional, courteous, and even worked late to get the job done in the time frame given. They did a nice job and I would definitely recommend Mountaintop Construction to my family and friends.

Chris is working on a big basement project for me and I wasn't sure if I could rate him more than once on the site, so I've been waiting, but honestly, he just keeps getting better and better so I have to tell the world! Chris is honest, professional, patient, creative, meticulous, kind, smart, and reliable. His work is quality and his work ethic is impressive. I continue to add projects to the list as he works through this one because now I can't think of another professional I'd rather have on the job! I'll post photos and more details of his work as we go, now that I know I can rate him more than once!

I worked with Bryan for about 6 months. In that time we completed condo renovation, basement finishing, crown install, baseboard install, door install and building/installing units. Bryan is fantastic, diligent, punctual and detail oriented. He is the best I’ve ever worked with at installing crown moulding and baseboard. I would highly recommend him for door installs also.

There were a few delays at the beginning but overall, Jeremy (and his team) were able to complete my basement project in relatively good time. As the project began, there were a few changes and Jeremy was able to not only accommodate the changes but keep it within budget and the original timeframe for completion. I plan to use Jeremy and his team for other home projects in the future. Thank you again!

We hired Galvan Remodeling to finish our basement with two conforming bedrooms and a 3/4 bathroom with a double vanity. We were very happy with the results and found that Jose and his crew were very fast and courteous. They even moved all of their tools and supplies through the basement window so they didn't make a mess in the rest of the house! Jose was always making sure throughout the build that we were happy with the progress. Galvan Remodeling finished the build on time and in budget! We would definitely hire Galvan Remodeling again!

I contacted Parasio Construction through Thumbtack regarding finishing our unfinished basement in our new home in Loveland. Fran Garcia owns Parasio Construction and came over the same day we contacted him. We explained we wanted 2 bedrooms, a entertainment room with a fireplace, a finished bathroom with tile shower and light within the shower. He agreed to submit a bid on the project and within a few days replied with his proposal. We had also contacted several other contractors and had their bids as well. Fran's bid turned out to be the lowest of the bids submitted. He explained that as a small company, he could keep costs down. I was also impressed by Fran's general character. He has a calm, positive personality. He is a very good listener. He was realistic in estimating how long it would take to complete the project, and finished in literally half the time that another contractor thought it would take. When the project was completed, Fran sent in an excellent cleaning crew and cleaned our entire house! There were minor issues that came up, but Fran made it right. I can recommend him without reservation, and would use him again in a heartbeat!

Cannot say enough great things about Scott and his colleague! They were professional, had great ideas and actually cleaned up the mess created from their work! We are in the process of finishing our basement (hence wanting to cut the window wells) and our general contractor was so impressed with Scott that he asked for his information to use him in the future. This is probably way more of a testament to his workmanship than my layperson’s opinion. :)

I had a FANTASTIC experience working with Denver Developers. The co-founders of the company, Justin and James, are extremely professional and were very willing to work within or budget and timeline. We needed a deck built within 5 days, and they finished within 1.5 days! Their crew was prompt, highly communicative, and tremendously respectful of our property. I also needed a very last-minute demolition job completed in my home, and Denver Developers was able to accommodate our extremely short 24 hour turn around time period with ease. I have never had a more enjoyable experience working with any other contractor in the Denver-metro area, and look forward to having them manage & execute our 1200-square foot basement renovation within the next few months. I hired Brandon to basically pick up where another contractor had left off after that contractor proved to be unreliable, unprofessional and lacking in quality workmanship. After having one (costly) problem after another with contractors, I am so relieved and thankful to have finally found Brandon. He showed up when he said he would, worked until his goals for each day were complete, showed a complete respect for me and for my home the entire time he worked, and left me with a finished product that rivals even my keen attention to detail and bend toward perfectionism. If you've read this review to the end, then I'm guessing you may have also seen the reviewer who left him only one star with no explanation. I saw it, too, but decided to hire Brandon regardless. I really am glad I did, and I hope that you will put more stock in my thoughtful and detailed review than in the review of someone who left a bad review with no words to back it up. Brandon is completely worthy of my five stars, and I only hope he doesn't get so busy with future business that he won't have time to come back in the future when I need him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
