I had an amazing experience with Dr. Looby. She was thorough and expedited any edits in just a few days. All of her corrections were spot on and recommendations for wording and clarity were much appreciated. I couldn't have gotten through the editing process of my dissertation without her. I would highly recommend!!!

Kim is an excellent project manager, and has a commanding digital skill set including content creation, editing, marketing and publishing. Combined with her talent in photography, there's no project that Kim can't deliver on time, on quality, and on cost. Kim recently composed a professional Bio for my participation as a technology panelist. I was struggling to capture the right mix of education, skill and relevant experience. Kim found the balance I needed and made me shine (again).

I highly recommend Nancy Sparrow and Sparrow Solutions for all business and household support! I have used their Business Services and their Personal Concierge services since 2008. I have 100% trust in them. Nancy is a dynamic person and I trust her and her team to do whatever it takes to get things done. On the personal side...they manage my credit cards, finances, my son's schedule, my calendar, travel arrangements, household projects, errands, storage units, etc. As a note...she is also a very solid editor of copy. On the Business Services side, SS provides admin support, inventory, operational support, business development and research, marketing and sales, writing and editing as well as lots of projects we don't have specific staff for. It would be a mistake not to go with Sparrow Solutions.

Ana was very professional and easy to work with. She brings a unique perspective to my writing needs. Her voice is illuminated through her word choice and storytelling. In addition, she has exceptional editing skills and I will be going back to her for any of my future writing or editing needs.

I had the opportunity to ask Dana to edit and proofread a short review paper I sent for publication. She was always available for questions and also constructive with her comments on my writing. As a non-native speaker of English, it is always good to know why some combinations of words are less frequent than others but seem ungrammatical. Her training in Lingusitics definitely helps her making that kind of commentary. I am pleased with her job and would recommend her to anyone who needs a sharp eye to look at their writing.

Alec edited my book for me as well as helped to create marketing materials for my new start up business. While editing the book he was able to articulate complex concepts in a beautiful way--very clearly and succinctly. He challenged me on areas that were inconsistent in the book which made the overall result SO much better...much higher quality and consistency. I could finally relax knowing that Alec had looked at my work and fixed what needed fixing! He is a treasure and I am so grateful for his work and his guidance.

      About

Many other copyeditors advertise themselves as writers. While I am a capable writer, especially in the context of editing, I always wonder (and I'm sure many prospective clients do too) if these editors might rather be writing, or if the author's voice will get lost in the editing. I've seen that it sometimes does. Rest assured that I am here to edit for you, not make my own voice heard.

      About

I offer reading, writing, and test prep tutoring services to all ages. After graduating with honors from Lesley University with an M.Ed. in English Education, I worked for three years as an English teacher. During this time, I taught English 8, English 10, English 12, AP Language & Composition, Creative Writing, and SAT Reading & Writing. I also taught after school and weekend SAT Prep sessions. I am a licensed educator for English 8-12 in both Massachusetts and Texas. I also hold a supplementary license in special needs education in Texas. Additionally, I have experience working with both special needs students and English language learners. I left teaching when my husband's job moved us to Colorado and we decided to have a baby. I've been working as a freelance writer and editor for over a year. However, I miss working with students and am looking to expand my services into tutoring.

      About

I don’t edit for writers, but with writers. Yes, I’ll make changes and comments and suggestions and omissions and give you my educated opinions, but writing is a communal activity. It exists in an interactive space, a place where a writer can explore all types of creativity. My job as your editor is to guide and shape your writing, to bolster what’s working and encourage it—and you—to keep going. You write. I observe, engage, and respond. Then together we comb out the tangles and add in some conditioner—because that’s what working with me as your editor will be like: we’ll smooth out the rough drafts, give it all a solid foundation so then the story can continue to grow. General edits and line edits. Private lessons: Tell Chelsey what you want to work on, and she'll choose a book that she thinks would be helpful in accordance to your wants/needs, and will read the book with you. She will assign weekly lessons and questions about different craft aspects in the book, as well as writing exercises. Each week, the writer emails Chelsey a piece of writing under 2000 words (either a single piece of writing or a selection of smaller pieces), and she'll do those hardcore edits. The amount of writing you send to Chelsey is up to you. Some people like to get comments on the writing exercises provided to them. Some like to submit the latest version of a piece she/he/ze is working on. Either of these options--or any other ones you might come up with--are fine. The focus here is on your writing. Chelsey will accommodate for and support all of the ways in which you want to learn and work.

      About

Much of my background has resulted from writing and editing for major newspapers, including the Wichita (KS) Eagle, the Denver (CO) Post and the Pacific Stars & Stripes, and also the Tokyo Bureau of Associated Press. I was co-publisher of three books for attorneys and judges, one of which was purchased by the Colorado Bar Assn. and now pays us occasional royalties. I have produced dozens of periodical newsletters for public and private sector organizations, as well as speeches, brochures and advertisements for political candidates and referendum sponsors. My university major was creative writing.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
