Chris came out to clean my carpets after some renters and their pets trashed my basement. He was very professional and friendly and provided a great explanation of his services. He is very honest and realistic. The carpets turned out great! It's like a completely different basement! I can not thank him enough. Highly recommended!!!!

Needed tile done in my basement for a remodel underway and wanting to find someone that was not only able to help with that but other projects in the house. Forrest quickly proved that he was the man for this. He was always quick to respond and his team as well. They all did quality work for me and I'm pleased with quality of work. I'll be hiring him some more as more projects emerged. Even recommended him to some family members as well.

Steve and his team installed drywall in our basement. They were professional, courteous, and even worked late to get the job done in the time frame given. They did a nice job and I would definitely recommend Mountaintop Construction to my family and friends.

Chris is working on a big basement project for me and I wasn't sure if I could rate him more than once on the site, so I've been waiting, but honestly, he just keeps getting better and better so I have to tell the world! Chris is honest, professional, patient, creative, meticulous, kind, smart, and reliable. His work is quality and his work ethic is impressive. I continue to add projects to the list as he works through this one because now I can't think of another professional I'd rather have on the job! I'll post photos and more details of his work as we go, now that I know I can rate him more than once!

We love how everything turned out & we are definitely hiring this firm to finish our basement. Good guys! Highly recommend them!

Thank you Thumbtack for helping me find Nichols Finish Carpentry! I have never used Thumbtack before and I was thrilled with the results. Frank, the owner, contacted me shortly after I put in my request. They built a walk in closet in my basement. The pricing was more fair and beat all of the estimates I had obtained previously. They were timely, hard working, conscientious about their work, helpful with questions I had, and supported challenges I presented with. They did an awesome job, cleaned up the job and were very easy to communicate with. Frank seemed to know exactly what it was I was looking for. I definitely plan on hiring them again SOON and would highly recommend this company to anyone. There is no need to look anywhere else. And if Frank can't do the job, he probably can get you set up with someone who can. This is the one you need to hire for your construction needs!!

I worked with Bryan for about 6 months. In that time we completed condo renovation, basement finishing, crown install, baseboard install, door install and building/installing units. Bryan is fantastic, diligent, punctual and detail oriented. He is the best I’ve ever worked with at installing crown moulding and baseboard. I would highly recommend him for door installs also.

Although I required a basement finished to be done a day quicker, Joe was upfront with me on the time he required to finish the job and needed more time. He was meticulous in his finish and did a great job at this, especially considering the time I required it done.

After looking for the right and affordable contractor for months, it can be a little frustrating but it was worth the wait. I found GALVAN remodeling LLC, they were very prompt at price, work and time frame. They worked on my entire basement from scratch to finish, all the plumbing, walls, floors, paint even door sizing. Their work was done fast, efficient, and very well organized. No middle man on contracting work. Very affordable, efficient and well done. I truly recommend the work that GALVAN remodeling LLC, can do for you.

Edward did an excellent job with the project my fiancé and I hired him for. Edward was responsive and upfront with my fiancé from the very beginning. He listened to exactly what we needed. We needed to turn a basement living room into a master bedroom with a closet as well as texture the remodeled master bathroom. Edward did great work with the metal framing; did great work with the drywalling, mudding, and texturing as well. I have nothing but great things to say about Edward. We have had a lot of bad experiences with contractors throughout our remodel and Edward’s professionalism restored our faith that there are good contractors out there. We would recommend his services to anyone.

I had a FANTASTIC experience working with Denver Developers. The co-founders of the company, Justin and James, are extremely professional and were very willing to work within or budget and timeline. We needed a deck built within 5 days, and they finished within 1.5 days! Their crew was prompt, highly communicative, and tremendously respectful of our property. I also needed a very last-minute demolition job completed in my home, and Denver Developers was able to accommodate our extremely short 24 hour turn around time period with ease. I have never had a more enjoyable experience working with any other contractor in the Denver-metro area, and look forward to having them manage & execute our 1200-square foot basement renovation within the next few months. Dan Hall inspected our new home and took care of resolution of several different items. His attention to detail and experience in a variety of projects is amazing. Separately, we had him install an undercounter ice maker and he ensured that it looked good and blended with the decor in addition to making sure it worked appropriately, including adding a custom drain into the basement. Highly recommended.

JG and Curtis of Made Right Builders do great work! They turned our unfinished basement that was just an empty weight room into a framed bedroom with an egress window. They worked as quiet as possible in the basement to make sure the rest of our house was not in a construction zone while they were working.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
