Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

How much does computer repair cost per hour?

It costs an average of $60 per hour for computer repair. Hourly rates range from $45-$50 on the low end and $85-$90 on the high end.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

My computer was restored and repaired to brand new in a matter of days and they even went out of their way to recommend and purchase a new laptop and get it completely set up for me. They did all the work! Then they came to my house and trained me on using my new computer as well. Total customer service! The best!

I had flown to Denver to check into a specialized hospital. Anyone who has spent any time in hospitals knows how boring they can get, and how important it is to have access to your important information, like how to pay your bills online, research you need to share with your doctor, and doing something other than watching TV! Unfortunately, a week into my stay, my computer completely died. Needless to say, I was devastated, and there was no way I could just leave and drop off my computer somewhere for repairs. After some trusty Googling, Thumbtack set me up with a company calls The Creative Technologies who came all the way to my hospital room, completed a preliminary diagnosis of the problem, and took my computer for a full 24-hour assessment of damage and repairs, after giving me an incredibly reasonable and competitive quote for repairs. The next day, we discovered that my computer was fine, but needed a new keyboard. They promptly ordered the parts necessary for repairs, and while we waited for parts to come in, they supplied me with my laptop AND a complimentary external keyboard so I could still use my computer. During this time, I transferred to an entirely different hospital. Once the parts came in, my personal technician came straight to my new address, picked up my computer and loaner keyboard, fixed my laptop with its new keyboard, and delivered my laptop in perfect, repaired, and clean condition. Now my computer looks it's best and works better than ever. I do not have enough positive things to say about Adeel, my technician, the great people at The Creative Technologies, and the people at Thimbtack for helping match me to the perfect service professionals. Wish I could give more than five stars! Thanks again to all involved; I LOVE my new/old computer!

This was an awesome experience, My son and I had a surge that caused our computer monitor and keyboard not to work. Researched online and none of fixes worked. Found Onsite Consulting in my search for computer repair via Thumbtack. I called several other places prior to calling Scott. The diagnostic cost was way out of budget. Scott indicated they would check the computer for free and then provide the solution and cost. Amazing, On our visit the staff was great very helpful and informative. My computer problem was more extensive than expected. Scott came up with an unbelievable solution that put our projects back in motion. We are so grateful!!!! I highly recommend Onsite Consulting for any computer or laptop solutions. Thanks a lot Scott and the staff at Onsite Consulting. Will and Jay

I called Boyce with seemingly unsolvable computer issues which he recognized; assured me he could fix remotely (which he did- fantastic);.. and did not even ask for a credit card number or any payment up front . He completed the repair perfectly. He certainly has my recommendation!

Hard to say enough good things about Fabrizio. He was knowledgeable, patient and professional. He methodically went through the process of diagnosis and repair, sticking with it until everything was fixed - and he did it all remotely. I can honestly honestly say he goes above and beyond - at a fee that is more than fair. I have never recommended a computer tech before, but I recommend Fabrizio.

If you ever have any hardware problems at all and you need someone who is capable of assessing the issue, fixing it, all in an extremely timely manner then look no further than Scott. I’m in graduate school and I accidentally had water spilled on my laptop and it was nonfunctional and unresponsive. I needed someone who could fix the issue ASAP because I had a huge deadline coming up and all of the files I needed were on my laptop. When I posted a job on Thumbtack, not only was Scott the first person to respond to my posting, but he was also able to meet with me and run diagnostic tests on my laptop within hours that same day. He got me my laptop back to me the next day and I am confident that if it weren’t for Scott I would’ve lost all my data, missed my project deadline, and probably paid an arm and a leg for someone else to not even get the job done. Go with Scott at IN2 Solutions for all your computer repair needs and you won’t be disappointed!
