I don't know where to start! This man Larry is from a time that believes in hard work and fair prices. I mean he showed up with a smile and I'm pretty sure he doesn't know the word "can't". He did an exceptional job installing 4 ceiling fans and requested a modest payment I had to tip him big. Others were asking $600 or $140 per fan and just price gouging as much as they could. Honestly Larry's prices were too low for the level.of work he does. This guy is a professional on a level that has been long forgotten. I can not speak highly enough about him and when I finish my basement he will be the one that I call. Only thing about this experience is that the bar has been set so high I'm afraid for the next service.... If you see him hire them trust me you WON'T be disappointed. fast, efficient, people person, knowledgeable, and hard working!!! Thank you for being you Larry.

I needed some interior ceiling painting done so after submitting a bid through Thumbtack I heard from Forest Ponder. He came to give a more precise bid and was honest, reasonable, professional and friendly. He then had his painting crew come over to get an even more precise bid and the beautiful work was done in a blink of an eye. I would recommend Forest, Beyond Boundaries, his crew and his professional opinion to anyone. In fact, I already have. I hope to use Beyond Boundaries for my future projects.

Daniel was prompt always returned calls and the work he did was spectacular. I am going to have him do some flooring work for me in the future....I would highly recommend to complete any of future projects!!

Kyle did a great job of helping us decide how to achieve the look we wanted for our patio ceiling and trim. He was flexible about arranging the right materials and figure out how to make it all look good. He completed exactly what he promised right on schedule, and we are very happy with the final result!

Paul came too our home and agreed to put up 17 osb boards in our garage ceiling. He gave us a date and time he would be here and he was spot on. Paul went to work on the date said and the first day completed half of the project and said he would be back the next day to finish the job. He was on time the next morning completed the job and I couldn't be more pleased. I will definitely use him in the future for any jobs I need done.

I hit the jackpot finding Maurice! I bought a townhouse that needed some renovating. My original plan was to remove popcorn ceiling, remove wall paper, paint, remove tile floor and lay carpet, upgrade tiled fireplace and tiled window seat. I knew I would need to coordinate the different jobs, while sticking to a tight timeline of one month. I happened upon Superior Floors while looking for someone to remove tile. During our first phone call, I explained my plan and found out he could do all of my projects. I was ecstatic!! From the moment I met him, I could tell he was passionate and very knowledgeable about his job. He noticed the mismatched texture on the walls (two other painters didn't notice), gave suggestions, and was very creative in designing the fireplace. I added a few things to the project (install/wire ceiling fans, new flooring in the bathroom, upgrade interior doors) when we met and was assured they would be done in time. After they started working and I saw progress, I became excited and asked about doing a few other things that I had planned for the future during this renovation (new bathroom cabinets for both bathrooms, new countertops, new lighting fixtures, and granite countertops for the bathroom and kitchen). Though I knew I was adding more work and possibly delaying my timeline, he accepted the challenge. Maurice kept in constant contact throughout the entire project. He kept me within budget and he maintained my one month timeline, even with the added projects!! I was very lucky everything was delivered on time or early. The finished project is amazing and I love my "new" place! I have already had him back to make my laundry space more functional. He did a great job with this too! I will be hiring him again to retile the master shower and guest bath. He is personable, professional, and thorough. He does a fantastic job and does it right the first time, he does not cut corners. I really liked his excitement and design ideas throughout the project. I highly recommend Maurice with Superior Floors! It was my first experience with a contractor, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Nick and Eric remodeled our master bathroom -- everything from rebuilding the shower stall, fixing a plumbing leak, tiling in and around the shower and bathtub, all plumbing associated with three new shower heads and new bathtub hardware, adding can lights, installing a new wall sconce (and outlet), running HDMI from master bedroom to bathroom, making custom mirrors, designing and making a custom barn door (and installing), installing new flooring in master bath and master bedroom, installing new baseboards, installing new vanity and all the plumbing and hardware associated, installing new ceiling exhaust in master bathroom, custom building and installing new glass block windows (2) and finishing exterior of window casing to match rest of house, installing new valves for toilet, and installing new toilet, and many other minor adjustments throughout the project. The best part was working with Nick and Eric throughout the process to continually find the right solution and produce a spectacular new bathroom.

I hired Cody to rewire and install the new lighting in my kitchen during construction, and he did an amazing job. The project was a bit complicated due to the structural beams in the ceiling and the original wiring, but Cody was able to work through those challenges with ease. He takes great pride in his job and does it very well. He communicates promptly and clearly when problems arise, and is always available and willing to answer all questions and provide alternate suggestions if necessary.

Mark was Great!! He treated our home and our family pet as if they were his own! Mark and his partner installed about 700 sq. ft. of flooring Personally,(NOT a crew of guys that can not speak English) :) His rates were also better than any other local company quotes I received. Shockingly satisfied, I have now hired Mark (Budget Construction) to come back next week to start another flooring installation for us to do the rest of our home!

The job greatly expanded over time because he did such a fabulous job on the first work order, which was to do all of the construction remediation in a badly flooded basement: drywall repair, painting, replacing damaged floor molding, replacing pad and carpet. I cannot recall the square footage of the basement now, as the house was sold some months ago. Then, I hired him to help get the house fixed up for sale. The house is about 2900 square feet. He painted the entire interior, replaced the carpet, had all the numerous windows cleaned (in and out, including a 450 square foot sunroom with a two story glass ceiling) he fixed all the interior woodwork. In addition to all that he basically oversaw the sale of the remnants of an estate sale while there was no one else there to help me. This was all done with exceptional craftsmanship and timeliness. Even in a very hot real estate market, I honestly believe that the house sold as quickly and for the price it did was due to the work that Joe did. Joe is as honest as the day is long. We have become friends as a result of these many projects and I can truly say that the only good thing that came out of the events leading up to the need for this work to be done was meeting Joe. If you need any of the many services that Joe can provide, you would be foolish not to hire him.

Tim installed our tongue and groove wood ceiling perfectly! It's the focal point of our house and every guest notices the exquisite skill it took to make it exactly right. This was no easy task since our roof trusses weren't square. He also did a lot of trim carpentry, baseboards, doors, framing, etc.. and did so with unrivaled expertise. We call him the 'wood whisperer' since he was able to customize many of our doors which weren't made right and you could never tell any adjustments were made. His work is truly flawless. He does all of this with such a positive attitude, it's remarkable. He's a tremendous talent and a man you enjoy having around for his easy going and happy disposition. Highly recommend!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
