Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tax preparer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to conduct an appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, as this will ensure that you remain within the CDC's social distancing guidelines.

Ask tax professional near you if they would be willing to give a consultation via phone call, Zoom, Skype or other video conferencing software to discuss the scope of work. Also, ask them how they handle payments and whether they will be able to conduct all of their services remotely.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.

How can I find out if a tax preparer os considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out which services are deemed essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city and look for information about essential services.

For information on a national level, visit CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a tax preparer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a tax preparer near you, ask if the tax preparation can be handled remotely. Most accounting firms and tax preparers may be willing to offer this. Before you hire a tax preparer, contact them and ask about their procedure for working virtually.

Is it better to have a CPA do your taxes?

Hiring a certified public accountant (CPA) could be a better option instead of doing your taxes by yourself, but it depends on your tax situation and preferences. Having a CPA do your taxes is usually recommended if you have a business or any type of side job, or if you’ve been contacted by the IRS for a tax-related matter. Others who can benefit are those who own rental properties or have many assets. You can also hire a CPA if you need help understanding what deductions or credit you might qualify for.

What is a tax preparer called?

A tax preparer can take the form of several different job titles, but they must have an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) to be authorized to prepare federal tax returns, according to the IRS. Some titles may include enrolled agents, who are licensed by the IRS, as well as certified public accountants (CPAs). Some tax attorneys may offer tax preparation and planning services, though not all are qualified to do this.

Is it worth it to pay someone to do your taxes?

There are several reasons it could be worth it to have an experienced professional do your taxes instead of self-filing. For example, it can help reduce the chance of you making a mistake that could land you in trouble with the IRS. And, it could save you time for other important tasks. If you have a side job, rental property or many assets, having someone do your taxes can pay off in the short- and long-run.

Contact several tax professionals near you to discuss your needs and get free estimates. Then, decide if hiring a pro is right for you.

Does a tax preparer need to enter my home?

It is not typically necessary for a tax preparer to enter your home. Many CPAs and tax professionals operate remotely. Ask the tax professional if they can conduct their services remotely, and see what precautions they have in place during social distancing.

Do tax preparers offer remote or virtual services?

Contact local CPAs or tax professionals to see if they can offer their services without in-person contact. Many firms can operate remotely or virtually, and others that typically operate face-to-face may be changing their procedures to keep up with social distancing guidelines.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tax preparation services?

Before you hire a tax professional, visit their business profile to see how they handle payments. Many CPAs and tax experts accept digital payments through Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. More businesses may be changing their payment methods to accommodate social distancing. Check with your tax preparer to see how they handle payments.

My tax preparer of twenty-five years retired this year, necessitating my having to find a new preparer. Having no choice, I read numerous laudable reviews and contacted Evan McWilliams at EMC Accounting Group. Evan was truly an unexpected blessing, preparing my federal and two state taxes carefully and quickly. I am delighted to have found my new tax preparer.

Christine Ohlen was very professional and at the same time made the experience of sorting through documents and finally being able to file a very positive experience. She helped me to prepare for anticipated taxes for next year and educated me in areas of tax preparation that were new to me. I will most definitely return to Christine for next years tax preparation. She was outstanding!

Is tax preparation supposed to be fun? Christine and I managed to get through my 2014 taxes and had some good laughs along the way. Most importantly, she is so knowledgeable and was able to make recommendations as to where I could save money, reducing my tax debt significantly. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Seriously, no reason to even think about going to one of the "usual" tax preparers, Christine will simply rock your tax prep like no one else can!

Christina was wonderful and fast for our individual married filing separately and personal business taxes. In the midst of this year’s tax prep, she caught 2 errors on our past year’s taxes (which was prepared by a different paid professional), one of which helped us recoup money via an amendment. Highly recommend.

Our experience with Christine was very pleasant. We purchased a home last year and were uncertain about our tax situation. Christine was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job preparing our taxes. In addition, she gave us some valuable tax advice to improve our situation next year. We will DEFINITELY be back next year to Advocate Tax Worldwide!!!

My situation involved a review of a past tax issue as well as standard preparation of my current year's taxes. I worked with Karen and Christine, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. Both Karen and Christine were remarkably friendly, professional, quick, and helpful, and the cost for their help was very fair. Christine was able to very quickly resolve my past issue and get money back that I thought was gone, and Karen prepared my current year's taxes while I waited. I cannot recommend Advocate Tax Worldwide enough. There's a reason they're rated number 1 on Thumbtack.

Preparation of taxes. Poor communication-sent tax form to be signed to wrong Email address after I told her I wasn't receiving her messages. I called and left voice mail messages without a return call until the day taxes were due! Then she hung up on me when we finally made contact.

Caryl responded to me about amending previous year tax returns. She was incredibly responsive and knowledgeable about how I should handle a mistake I had made on a property depreciation issue. Not only did she thoroughly respond to my emails, but she made time to discuss and give me her opinion on the phone at no cost to me whatsoever. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Caryl and Shoreline Tax Solutions to anyone with tax preparation or amendment needs.

Due to an unexpected retirement late last year, I needed to find new tax preparers for my husband and me as well as my mother-in-law. Brett met with us on two different occassions to do our respective taxes (one appointment for us, one for my mother-in-law). Both appointments went very smoothly and the returns were done very quickly and their office had excellent access for a frail elderly customer. They are easy and professional to work with and their fees are totally within reason.

We hadn't filed our taxes for 5 years, for a variety of reasons. Finally we called Advocate Tax Worldwide. We met with Christine yesterday. After an hour and 1/2, we walked out not owing the IRS a thing! We were astounded! Christine phoned the IRS while we sat and listened. It was amazing. We realized how crucial it is to have an Enrolled Agent who has qualified with the IRS to negotiate on behalf of her clients. There is immediate credibility established as soon as she identifies herself to the IRS agent. I had never even heard the term, enrolled agent. Your ordinary tax preparer does not have this special status. It makes all the difference. After 5 years of anxiety and guilt, we are completely free and clear! Do yourself a favor and get the monkey off your back. Call Advocate Tax Worldwide. Life is good again! J. W. Burnham

I contacted Jason because I had an abnormal tax year for 2020 and I wasn't sure I could do it myself. He was patient and assured me that he could deal with my situation so I dumped all the documents on him. In the process of preparing my returns his questions prompted me to further question the accuracy of the amount of a distribution. His questions led to my questions which led to a corrected 1099 from the issuer and an out of pocket savings of thousands of dollars. Great results.

Advocate prepared my 2015 Federal and State Income taxes. I received a message from Christine Ohlen, through Thumbtack, and we arranged a time to meet and go over my documentation for my filing. At the time we met we were more than a month from the April 18th filing deadline. Christine was friendly and professional at our meeting and gave me great confidence that my taxes would be filed on time, with little problem.... And then- flash forward to April 18th. After multiple attempted contacts with Christine I was told my taxes were not ready, and that my file required more information. I had tried multiple times to contact Christine and check my progress, and all I received were short text messages and calls from the receptionist assuring me everything was alright. It wasn't. We received our return via email after a ton of 11th hour phone calls to provide additional information, just shy of 11pm (1hr before the deadline) We had practically no time to review the return, or ask questions, and even if we did once we received the email, Christine was quickly unavailable. I had to rush to the IRS website to make my payment, print my state return and run to the post office. So basically, if you want to go someplace where you won't get the run around, and stress you out at the 11th hour (at an already very stressful time) then you don't want to go here to get your taxes done.

Mostly good, with a couple misgivings in attention to detail. David and his office were incredibly responsive and when we talked on the phone very helpful and informed. The reason for giving a non-5 star rating is the initial return they prepared said we owed approx. $8,000 in taxes and I thought this was incorrect - I basically had to do a free file on my own (whole reason for paying for this was so I didn't have to do this) and found out David's office mis-entered my income from my W2. With all the experience they have I would have thought they'd catch it was weird we owed so much with how simple the return was. Luckily I caught the error before they filed so I didn't overpay by thousands of dollars. Their office quickly fixed this for us once I pointed out the mistake. It was an honest mistake, but for the money I paid I feel like this shouldn't have happened.
