Trinity Exteriors did a fantastic job on an urgent repair job I had in my house. I worked primarily with Kealan. He was punctual and reliable. He provided a detailed estimate of the job, and the actual price of the job matched the estimate. Kealan's communication was very strong. Before he began the work, I had a clear understanding of exactly what he planned to do and why each piece of the job was necessary. In addition, Kealan did a really nice job on the finishing. The job required installing new drywall on my kitchen ceiling and new tile in part of the shower. No matter how close you look, you can't tell where the old drywall and tile end and the new materials begin. Highly recommend.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Get started today by contacting the best deck contractors near you

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How do you find a good carpenter?

To find a good carpenter near you, do the following:

  • Use Thumbtack to find a list of carpenters in your area.
  • Filter the list by selecting a specific carpentry service, such as general carpentry or cabinetry.
  • Identify carpenters who have high ratings.
  • View the carpenters’ profiles and learn more about their specialties.
  • Read their customer reviews and look at photos of their past work.

After you get a good sense of their quality of work, make sure the carpenter has the necessary credentials in your state. Then, request several cost estimates for your project(s).

I have a large ten year old TREX deck in my back yard. The TREX was laid over a wooden frame and the benches were coming apart due to the wood rotting. Also, the deck lights were no longer working. Rhino Head came out and bid the project on a Tuesday night, gave me a price and told me it would take two days to fix everything. They came out and started the project on Thursday and finished up late Friday afternoon. It looks like I have a new deck. They completely disassembled the benches and rebuilt them with new wood rated for exterior usage. They also removed about a quarter of the flat deck to take a bow out of that portion of the deck and fixed the lighting system running under the deck. They cleaned up everything when they left and left no evidence (other than the "new" deck) of having been at my house. Their work was extremely high quality and sturdier than new. I would not hesitate to use them again on future projects.

I used them to clean and stain a deck at a home I had recently purchased. The deck was a few years old and in a state of disrepair. They cleaned one day and stained the next. They recommended a stain and it was an excellent recommendation. Overall great job.

As a single woman I was nervous about seeking out a professional contractor to renovate my deck. I noted that Red Earth Construction on Thumbtack was a father/son family owned business out of Castle Rock. Jim, the owner and father promptly responded to my Thumbtack ad and we began to speak on the phone to share my dreams for a deck. Upon meeting Jim, he was friendly, fatherly, and fair-minded. I trusted him and his judgement for my deck design. I quickly realized that my $4,000 budget does not cover the expense or the quality, no maintanence materials I desired for my deck project. The estimate was double my budget but I went forth. I had family coming into town for my daughter's wedding and my current deck was unsafe and unsightly. The deck project was delayed a bit due to rain, however once started it was completed in 10 days. I made it in time to entertain my company. The father/son/son team along with contracted help were present, available to talk to about design issues and unforeseen concerns. Unfortunately those unforeseen issues like beam spacing and stairwells increased my costs $2,000 beyond my original estimate. Ouch, that was tough because at that point I was committed. My advice would be to really be accurate on those estimates, check for the unforeseen, as those additional expenses are challenging to afford. My finished deck is beautiful. Red Earth Construction LLC, owned by Jim Endley and sons are truly men of integrity and quality workmanship. I know that I will call them again for any home project and recommend them to you. Yes, because of the charming, safe and beautiful deck that I enjoy but moreso because I know that if I have any issues with the deck or materials Jim will return my calls and address my concerns. The attention to detail, passion for creating beauty in homes and warm, friendly service, that's what makes Red Earth Construction LLC outstanding!

Even though he had a couple of major incidents occur in his personal life while working on our deck, he was ALWAYS there, on time, and professional. He is also very personable. We Build It did a wonderful job building my deck. Even my neighbors have comments on how nice it looks. I enjoyed working with the crew so much that I also hired them to finish my basement. I’ll keep you posted about how the basement turns out and even include photos. 🙂

Rich treats his jobs as though they are his own property. He wants everything to be perfect. He listens to your desires, does everything to accommodate them and offers his advice which is usually better than yours. I will have him out next year to maintain my deck and keep it looking as well as it does now since completion.

Quick review - He's amazing and we will never go with anyone else. Detailed review - Let me start off by saying that we have had our fare share of projects, and have hired and worked with many contractors, so this wasn't our first rodeo. The project was a very large (around 1800sqft) and complex composite deck that had to be built from scratch. We had 5 different companies give us a bid and in the end Jon won us over. He wasn't the cheapest nor the most expensive, but the second we sat down with him we knew he was knowledgeable and prepared for this project. He has truly blown us away with his craftsmanship, communication, dedication, honesty and perfectionism (which really bodes well with my type "A" husband). It may have taken a little longer than we all had expected, but it was completed with perfection and was done right. Jon is someone who you can trust to do it right the first time and who is honest and fair. JT Construction will be the only company we call when we have a project and we hope you will too!

Terrible communication and OK quality I recently had a project done by Mr. Handyman. It was supposed to be a very simple and inexpensive ramp off of my deck for my older dogs to be able to walk up and down. During initial discussions, there were two options for materials (with one being more expensive than the other) and I made it clear that we didn't want the cost to go up significantly with the more expensive material and would be fine with the cheaper option. The initial quote for materials was 100-200 for the cheaper option and 200-300 for the more expensive material. Handyman showed up and took measurements and I talked to him about what we wanted. Once the job was complete, the invoice was for almost twice what we expected and agreed to! Material costs were $570. Good customer service would have called from the store to make sure we wanted to move ahead with the project with the higher cost, but they never called or gave us any reason to think it would cost that much more! The job itself as OK. The handyman himself was very nice and the ramp was CLOSE to what we wanted - not quite gradual enough or non-slick enough for my dogs to go up and down safely. The first step I took in the ramp I slipped and fell! I had to go out immediately and spend another $100+ to make it safe for us to use. This was pretty close to being a complete waste of time and money (over $1,400!! for what was supposed to be simple and functional) On top of all of that, the first time I called after the project to pay the invoice (but dispute the total cost), I was told a manager would get back to me AND I have called 3-4 more times since and left messages with no response. This has been 3+ weeks now and no response, only 2 invoices in the mail. I would not use or recommend this service unless they get their communication skills in order...
