Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Are bathroom remodels worth it?

Remodeling your bathroom can lead to high personal satisfaction, as perhaps even a return on your investment when it comes time to sell your home. When you replace old and worn out surfaces with high-quality materials, it is almost guaranteed to improve the look and functionality of that space. A bathroom renovation can also improve your home’s curb appeal to future buyers and boost its overall value.

To determine if this project is worth the cost, start by getting free estimates from the best bathroom remodelers near you. And if you plan on selling your home, consult with your real estate expert to identify which remodeling projects you should prioritize.

What should I ask a bathroom remodeler before hiring?

It’s important to ensure that you and the contractor are on the same page before any work begins, so don’t be afraid to ask potential bathroom remodelers plenty of questions.

Start by reading the contractor’s reviews online. Ask to see examples of their past work — specifically, work that is similar to yours. If you need the bathroom remodel done by a certain date, ask the contractor if they will be able to complete the work by your deadline. And you should always ask how they handle payments.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

  • What materials do you recommend for my budget and overall vision?
  • How much are the materials and labor? What will my final cost be?
  • Do you have the proper license and insurance?
  • Can I see photos of past bathroom remodels you’ve worked on?
  • How long will it take to complete the remodel?
  • How do you handle payments?

Do I need a general contractor for a bathroom remodel?

For a small bathroom remodel, you may not need a general contractor. For example, if you simply need some plumbing or electrical work done in your bathroom, hiring a plumber or electrician should be sufficient.

However, if you’re tackling a large-scale remodel, a general contractor can coordinate a team of designers, painters and other specialty contractors to get the job done. Typically, the rule of thumb is that you should hire a general contractor if your project is large enough to require a building permit.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Our bathroom was old and the victim of some horrible DIY attempts by the previous owners. BathPerfect did a total remodel and they gave great advice on ways to save money. Our quote was fast and super helpful, and although we had to wait a bit (they are crazy busy for a reason!), our contractor was so polite, professional, and kept us updated through the whole process. He even finished a day early! Would highly recommend to anyone looking to remodel a bathroom.

Home Renovation Denver remodeled a bathroom for me in September 2017 in Congress Park, Denver. I had a great experience and was very pleased with the workmanship. The scope for my remodel included: demo, tiling, painting, moving plumbing and installing a new vanity and light fixtures. They were on time everyday and worked hard. I hope to work with them again in the future! Highly recommend.

KT Services completed a full kitchen and bathroom remodel, plus a few other smaller projects in our Capitol Hill condo. Todd was flexible and easy to work with and he provided alternate solutions when needed due to obstacles presented with the age of the building.

This was the first time I ever hired a contractor to do a remodel. Brandon was the 2nd person I had come give me a quote and his quote was more than the first but he took very detailed notes and held our hands through the entire process. We were able to do a bulk of the demo ourselves to save some money. Throughout the entire process Brandon was constantly checking in to make sure we were happy with the progress. We are absolutely thrilled with the work they did and our bathrooms look absolutely phenomenal. We had Brandon remodel the two bathrooms in my condo and there were a bunch of other companies that wouldn't even touch the job because it was too small. I highly recommend Brandon and Colorado Premier Construction and already have him pulling together a quote to remodel the kitchen as well.

Aron Villalobos of A.A.V Enterprises was the consummate professional for my bathroom remodel. He was timely, kept me informed on the job progress and was nothing but respectful to myself, my family and my home. Above all, the quality of work and attention to detail was very, very high. Additionally, there were no extra or hidden costs. The final cost was what was originally quoted, even though I know a few extra things had to be done to make the job right. I'll be using Aron for the second bathroom remodel coming up in the near future and strongly recommend his talents and experience to anyone thinking of having any tile work done.

We really loved working with Forest and his team! We had a very simple bathroom remodel and he treated it as it was a larger project for him. Very responsive and affordable. We met with a few other contractors, and beyond boundaries really blew us away with their references and experience. Would recommend!

After interviewing several contractors for a master bathroom remodel, I decided on Beyond Boundaries Construction to do the work. I was confident that Forest Ponder could handle the job and had the integrity to see the project through to the end. My client's home was built in the early 1900s and as a result, obstacles came up along the way. Forest handled them in a timely manner and was very communicative during the whole process. Forest was always available and we worked great together making design choices and thinking outside the box. I am very pleased at the transformation of this Master Bathroom and would highly recommend Beyond Boundaries Construction to handle your remodel needs. Thanks Forest for a job well done!

Michal Byrtus provided high quality remodeling services at a very affordable cost. He genuinely cares about the customer and went above and beyond to work with my small budget. He has so much experience that he recommended better alternative solutions. His attention to design details is outstanding and my bathroom turned out like a designer style bathroom. I would definitely recommend him with 100% confidence. Thank you Michal for all the work you did at the great price!!!! You’re the best :) Noelle

John did a bathroom remodel in a rental house for us. We live out of state and John’s communication was excellent. Every evening he would send us photos and/or a text of what was completed that day. We felt like we were there the entire project. Two weeks after the project ended a tenant called with an issue about hot water. John went back to the house the next day and resolved it. We finally were able to see the bathroom in person and it was exactly what we wanted. We will definitely hire John again for our other projects. Thank you, John!

Nello remodelled our bathroom, taking it all to stud and completely redoing everything. The end product looks great. The biggest recommendation is that Nello made sure everything was done properly and did not cut corners. Our house is old and neither the walls, floor, nor ceiling were straight, so he made sure to adjust the stud and drywall to line everything up nicely and have it look good. I would thoroughly recommend him.

My experience with J&V was great and I would recommend them based on the work they did to remodel my bathroom. They were very professional with great responsiveness and communication, as well as documentation of each payment with a receipt. Tile work was clean and straight and they did a great job making sure I was satisfied with the work. Additionally, they did a great job keeping the work area tidy and cleaned up after the job was finished. I have worked with many contractors in the past and I felt that J&V went above and beyond to build my trust as a client and ensure I was satisfied with the final result.

Forest Ponder and his team did an excellent job with my partial bathroom remodel. Forest was the first contractor I met with to obtain a bid on the work and I knew almost immediately that I was going to hire him for the job (I canceled the other two bid meetings). He was courteous and conscientious. Forest helped guide me on some decisions I needed to make pertaining to materials and design and his care in that respect was unexpected and very welcome. When an issue came up with the old plumbing (having nothing to do with Beyond Boundaries), he handled it promptly and professionally. I would hire Forest again and would recommend him to anyone looking for quality, professional work.

Nello for the win! I wish I'd found him years ago. We're so happy with his work. He just wrapped up a small bathroom remodel for us (rip and replace vanity, floors + trim, lighting, and all the toilets in our house) and was great to work with. There were some bumps along the way (e.g., Home Depot didn't deliver our items on time/at all, so we had to change some plans at the last minute) but he helped us figure out what to do next and was a great advisor as we gathered supplies. Nello clearly takes a lot of pride in his work, he does everything he says he's going to (on time), he communicates excellently, and he cares about the function and aesthetic of the final product. We're already planning our next project for him.

We could not have been more pleased with Forest and the entire crew from Beyond Boundaries. When I initially started thinking about our bathroom remodel in the fall, the hardest part was finding a contractor who seemed interested in taking on such a small project (Denver contractors are busy these days!). Thankfully, thumbtack helped connect me with Beyond Boundaries. From the beginning, Forest made us feel like our project was important. He and his crew paid great attention to detail, were highly communicative, and took pride in their work. From Noe (who did the tile work), to the painter, electrician, glass door installer and plumbers, everyone was friendly, hard working, and went above and beyond. We couldn't be happier with the result. We will definitely be using Beyond Boundaries on all future home projects! Thanks to Forest and the team!

We hired RPM for our bathroom remodel & I truly cannot say enough good things about this company and its owner Vince Ortega! We have owned 2 fixer upper homes over the last 8 years, so I am very well-versed in home improvement DIY as well as what it’s like to hire various tradesmen. Because of that background I not only have high standards for work quality, but also a need for open discussion about the work I want done & what I want to do myself bc of budget. Vince exceeded my expectations in both those areas! He listened to what I wanted, discussed my options, answered all of my questions & best of all, consulted me every time something came up that needed a design or logistical decision. And for people who DON’T have any knowledge or experience, THIS is the company to hire bc they know what they’re talking about & they’re happy to talk it through with you OR make the decisions you don’t want to be involved in. Those 2 qualities together make a home Reno project so much less stressful :) In the end our bathroom turned out flawlessly. Our shower & floor tile & new bathroom fixtures are beautiful & I couldn’t be happier with it. RPM is absolutely exceptional and I am so thankful we found them. As long as we’re in the Denver area, they’ll be my go-to guys for all the things I can hire them for! (No seriously, we’re hiring them some landscaping this summer 😆) Vince & Dominic, your work is truly quality & it was a joy to have you in our home. Thanks a million!

Quality flooring and granite can improve by getting out of the business of home remodeling!Aaron and his team left my bathroom like this. After, I refused to accept a mirror he had prices on the invoice for $895 dollars when it was clearly refurbished from an old job. After going back back and forth with Aaron regarding his integrity and how he tried to give me a mirror that he claims he paid $700 + for I requested the come take the mirror back and get his money back because he had been bamboozled. He swore up and down that he paid a high dollar for the mirror and would never produce and receipts for said item. Please do. It deal with him e marks items up well above the standard 15%. Wants payment to buy materials that are not available when team comes out to install because they wait on him for over 2 hours to bring materials that have already been been paid for and should be at job site when work is to be done. He does not communicate at all! He pulls current workers on projects from your project to work another project and does not communicate this to client. You look up and the workers say the have to leave be uae Aaron wants them to go to another property. He had to fire one guy that was on my project because I complained about the inconsistently and Medes that person left everyday. Aaron never attempts to correct the problem himself he just finds another set of workers that he can send to your house. He stole my old sink didn’t even ask if I wanted it. Overall terrible experience and it makes so much since to me now why he only had 3 reviews, I warn you do not work with this man!!
