Francisco and his team are very good to work with. They made considerable updates and fixes to our roof where other roofers had messed up. Will work with them again.

I am impressed. We live in a high end home (I don't mean to sound pretentious, it's just that the components are problematic). Our HVAC unit is Geo-thermal. I have had many different companies out to address the same issue (no air in through the bedroom vent) and finally Tim has given us a couple of solutions. This is on-going but at least we know why. We also had a problem with the venting of an indoor grill in the patio room. He has remedied that issue to the extent possible without switching any major components. We will continue to work with him and hopefully the plan to increase the motor for that vent will eliminate the venting problem for the grill and installing air flow fans will increase cooling and heat for the bedroom. His pricing was very reasonable, probably competitive but it's not worth a penny if the issues cannot be resolved. That's why I highly recommend him. Hard worker! Did a few extra things...no charge.

Steve and his team were on site right at 8 am and ready to get the job done! They were so quick to respond and did a wonderful job! They had to rebuild the exterior parapet wall because the old bricks were leaning out due to moisture be let in from the roof. They straightened it all out, now just need to get my roof repaired! I'll definitely be calling him again when I'm ready to start work on my fireplace!

Eric was prompt about getting to the job site at a rental house I own. He is good to work with and quickly provided a quote to install a new furnace and A/C unit. His price was competitive so I hired him. His crew came on time and worked quick and efficient to complete the job. He also installed a flue from the basement to the roof in an attic that others said was not accessible and they wanted to go a cheaper way with a smaller liner. Eric and his company did a terrific job and I highly recommend them. Ron A.

Ian has done several small projects for us (fixing misaligned cabinet doors, weathersealing exterior doors and adding vent screens). He has reasonable rates, and was very professional - showed up on schedule and did everything he agreed to. Also we really appreciated that he was able to give us advice about things like creating an attic access panel. We are so happy to have found someone reliable and knowledgeable, and look forward to getting his help with other projects in the future.

Following a home inspection for the sale of my home, it was determined that the roof required four new vent pipe rubber boots to be replaced. The next day, I left a message with Chuck at EagleView Roofing to ask if his team could provide the repair. Within 24 hours I was contacted by EagleView and explained what I needed to have done. EagleView provided me with an estimate and a date I would be contacted to schedule the work. I was contacted, the work was scheduled, and the work was completed in a timely manner on time and per the estimate. The roofers that completed work arrived on time and were professional. They took the time to explain the work they were going to complete and upon conclusion of the work, they reviewed with me what was done. I was very pleased with the responsiveness from my original call, the professionalism and knowledge and skills the team was able to provide. I would highly recommend this team for any type roof repair.

This was not a routine roofing project. It involved tearing off three layers of old roofing, the first layer having been installed in 1977. We found extensive water damage and Nicholson Pena was outstanding in replacing the old rotted plyboard with new wood before beginning the new installation. Nicholson Pena went out of their way to make sure that they answered all of our questions we had before and during the installation of a new Decra Shake (stone coated steel roof). They even made sure that the house was protected with Feltex SA 300 during the 10 day construction project. We would recommend Nicholson Pena for any proposed Decra Shake Roofing System project.

I highly recommend Trent for Handyman services and home inspections. Trent is very professional and does as promised. The quality of his work is excellent and I was very happy with the job he did for me- installing the venting above a range to exhaust smells and fumes outside while cooking. Thanks, Trent!

We used Sonners to replace our roof and gutters after last summers hail storms. Up front they were very thorough and professional in working with our insurance company and making sure we understood how the process worked. There were now hidden fees or costs. They did a very quality job during installation and did a great job cleaning up after themselves. We have been getting non stop compliments from our neighbors on how good every looks. We would definitely use Sonners again!

Contacted Mr Franks through Thumbtack in the morning and by evening of the same day he was on my roof. Great communication and respect for my time and situation. I asked for an evaluation of roof installed 3 years ago showing obvious issues. Mr Franks gave me a complete detailed analysis of all issues, offered to contact shingle manufacturer to inquire about warranty, and provided expert advice on how to proceed. He discussed options based on my budget and took the time to discuss the pros and cons of each of said options. He has even offered to provide expert representation as I meet with roofer that did the original work! Trey has really gone out of his way to be of assistance. Professional, courteous, and honest; three things that are sometimes hard to find in a contractor these days. Mr Franks demonstrated all three and I have hired him as my representative in assuring that my roofing situation is resolved appropriately.

I just had my deck , patio slab, and sliding patio doors project done through Red Earth Construction. Family team of Jim, Jason, and Jim Sr. I would use them again. I'm very cautious of who I would use as I have terrible experiences working with contractors in the past, losing money and having uncompleted poor projects.. Each time I have learned what not to do, but having met Jim who I went through the process was great. You get a sense of trust and confidence working with him. I had a budget and I did get other quotes but they came in with the best quote including with the 2 patio doors (custom done through Sunrise). The deck and patio slab took a full week to get done, and sliding doors were put in after. All of their crews that did the specific projects did a beautiful job, I was most impressed with Jerry their window/door installer. They did and great job retro fitting the beautiful sliding patio doors with the blinds . Meticulous on housekeeping , and detail . I will go through Red Earth Construction again on different home projects that can do. The family are all great, professional and easy to work with.

I contacted Thumbtack and requested bids from roofing companies on an insurance claim; 5 company names/contacts were provided. Of those five, only 3 responded and offered to provide an estimate. Of those three, two companies did an estimate from a satellite view. Of the two “satellite-based” estimates, one was $750+ out-of-pocket over what the other one bid. The other bid was completed as a few lines in an informal email, along with “yeah, we can do it – won’t make any money from it but we can always use a good rating.” This was also the company who suggested a ridge vent to replace the turtle vents “as long as you don’t live in a windy area.” The roof was being replaced for wind damage - duh. One contractor came out personally to look at my roof about 1 hour after our phone conversation. Dan Matheny from 1st Priority Roofing sent a written estimate, the company credentials, and the website for the roofing materials that he was proposing. It took about 10 days for the HOA to give their approval, all the while Dan kept in touch with me. By Monday of the following week, the roofing was delivered. By Wednesday afternoon the work was completed to include "code" upgrades that Dan arranged for the insurance to pay for. I am completely satisfied with the performance of 1st Priority Roofing and Sales Manager Dan Matheny. The new roof is beautiful and was zero headache to have done. I would re-use 1st Priority without hesitation and will recommend them in the future.

Elevations was absolutely great. I called them because we were putting in new vents for our A/C system and needed the old places where the vents were removed filled in and painted. Dan did such good work, that we also had him paint the entire outside of our house, complete hardwood floor repairs where there was water damage in the kitchen, and clean our chimney and install a chimney cap. Later I had Dan come back and do some other small tasks, including replace a toilet with a newer model. In each instance, he was prompt, clean, courteous and very knowledgeable. I really liked how he never tried to sell me things I didn't need, but advocated for the kind of repairs he would do for himself. I felt completely comfortable with him at all times, and we are so thrilled with the outcome. His work quality is unsurpassable! I'll definitely be calling Elevations again the next time I need work done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
