When I made the decision to work with a nutritionist, I wouldn't say I was necessarily at a rock bottom and needed to make some major life changes. I’ve actually never felt like I was obscenely over weight, and I’ve always ate relatively healthy meals. I didn’t go to a nutritionist with the intention of learning how to love vegetables. I have (and will always) love salads and plates full of vegetables. The breaking point for me was that no matter how hard I worked out or how healthy I felt like I was eating, I could never push myself past a certain plateau. I felt stuck at 165lbs with flabby arms and unattractive back & stomach fat. For awhile, I was just telling myself its ok, this is who I am. When I got with Stephanie, we set goals to tone up, drop a few pounds and create new patterns for healthier eating. To my surprise, I have kept up with the plan and plan on continuing to do so. In the 6months I worked with Stephanie, I eased into many important lifestyle habits that I actually love doing even after our sessions stopped, like drinking warm water and lemon every morning, taking handful of important vitamins, taking a brisk walk after my meals, no snacking and recognizing what kind of foods or exercise my body needs during the cycle I’m at. Stephanie is a blast to hang out with. She tailors her programs to what you need and she really helps you get to your goals. I lost 12pounds (and still losing weight!) in the 6months that I worked with her, I started buying smaller clothes, and love being photographed. Stephanie, I can’t thank you enough. I miss seeing you, but know that given all the tools and education you’ve given me, I’m off on the right path... all thanks to you! For those of you considering a nutritionist, definitely go see Stephanie. Immerse yourself in all the tips and tricks she offers you and I promise you won’t regret it.

I worked with Shanon for over 2 years. I successfully lost weight (20 lbs), increased muscle, improved my metabolism and enhanced my endurance. Workouts were fun, varied and challenging. My knowledge of nutrition and exercise improved as well. I highly recommend Shanon and would hire him again without hesitation.

I attended the veggie-slaws class. It was a one-hour session. The dishes were simple enough to make at home on my own, healthy and tasty! Pam's teaching method is hands-on, but not overwhelming. She teaches you how to make the dish and supplies you with a manual to take home! As she is a nutritionist, she informed me of the health benefits of the dishes we made. Pam is very personable. Although you are in a complete stranger's home, you don't feel awkward or uncomfortable. I had a fun, informative time!

Training with Blenda Cooper has been one of the best decisions I ever made. Blenda rises far above other trainers I have had in the past. She goes the extra mile –it’s not just, “lift this/lift that for 15 or 20 reps,” she makes sure you are doing the exercise right, breathing in/out at the right time, holding the weights properly, keeping your form and most importantly, using your core. Blenda takes it to the limit, assessing your fitness level and how far she can push you (and she will). The methods Blenda uses are challenging and effective. Blenda’s knowledge in fitness and the extra steps she takes to individualize workouts makes for a good fit. Whether you are male/female, younger/older, if you want a personal trainer who will challenge you athletically, guide you with your nutrition needs, and keep you coming back for more, Blenda Cooper is the one for you. Remember though, it’s not magic – you will have to commit yourself to go along with Blenda’s system to make it work. You won’t be sorry though because the beneficial results you will see and feel are worth it – just ask me.

Not only did I have the pleasure of working with Chef Dole in a classroom setting, from which I learned a lot, I also had the fortune of having him as my nutritionist after I had my daughter. He is very knowledgeable and well versed in many aspects as well as personable and helped me reach my goal of graduating as well as my weight loss. He was always professional and on time, quick to answer if I ever had questions, I would recommend him highly.

Sara has been my main nutritionist for the past few years. After years of suffering from chronic migraine headaches, I finally took her advice to focus on the gut/brain relationship. Upon her advice, I gave up gluten and sugar and as a result gave up all my migraine medications. She realized that my gastrointestinal problems were directly related to the headaches. She knew this complete change in diet would be very difficult for me since I was basically a sugarholic! She helped me with recipes and made the transition so much easier than I thought it would be.If not for her I'm sure I would still be suffering. Her constant follow-ups and pep-talks truly show how much she cares!!

I began working with Natalie in June of 2017 after a mutual friend referred her. I have nothing but great things to say about Natalie. As a nutritionist, she is deeply knowledgeable, diversely experienced, and uniquely holistic. As a counselor and an advocate, she is detailed, principled, persistent, and compassionate. In working with clients, she takes the time to understand the ins and outs of their experiences, circumstances, and goals. She is reflective and responsive, and she has answers for any and all questions one can throw at her. The advice, plans, and preparations she gave me had an immediate and lasting impact on my overall wellness, and her guidance far transcended the common calories-in-calories-out mentality that too often dominates conversations about nutrition. She has a deep and nuanced knowledge about the ways in which nutrition interacts with the human body, and she also is an expert with respect to how diet and exercise impact moods, emotions, and motivation. She knows how to set measurable goals and is well-versed in the practice of incrementalism, and as such she knows how to simultaneously create workable challenges and keep her clients feeling supported and comfortable. She has a high EQ and fantastic people skills, and based on my experience I am sure she can work wonders for anyone lucky enough to find and reach out to her. Natalie is a top-tier professional and a wonderful person, and she has the knowledge, tenacity, and experience necessary to build success for anyone with whom she works. I strongly recommend her to anyone and everyone!

Zach sat down with me, got to know me, and helped me come up with a well-being plan that worked with my busy schedule. He helped me with meal plans, put me through a workout three times a week, and gave me many free resources. He even showed me some strategies to prepare quick and healthy lunches. He guided me through the first few weeks and offered to help longer. He gave me seven different recipes for quick and easy bento lunches. Being a teacher, a quick, healthy, and energizing lunch is important, so I was so grateful for his assistance! All around, Zach is a great nutritionist, yoga coach, personal trainer, or even meditation guide! I would strongly recommend him to anyone looking to improve your overall well-being, or if you're interested in just one of the above listed, he's great!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
