My experience with JHD was wonderful. I was organizing a graduation/send-off party for my MBA cohort and we had the event at a classmate's home. Marylyn was extremely prompt throughout the process and had great attention to detail, making sure that we were able to have all the right equipment and that it would be functional at both the primary location as well as at the backup rain location. Because this was a school event, there were certain restrictions on how the event needed to be run (e.g. we needed to have a licensed bartender, we had a certain budget within which to operate, etc.) and Marylyn was very accommodating with these requests. They staff at the event (chef, assistants, bartender) were charming in how they interacted with guests. There were a couple times when guests accidentally spilled or dropped something after having set it down on an uneven surface, and someone was always there within a minute with a replacement snack/beverage. The food itself was delicious; several people came up to me afterward and told me that the bacon-wrapped dates were heavenly and that they even broke their diets to have more! At the conclusion of the event everything was cleaned up and left just the way it was before. If I were to have another event I would certainly choose JHD again!

We have had the pleasure to work with Bacco catering a number of times, and in each instance they deliver perfectly in terms of quality of food, service, and attentiveness to client needs. Most importantly, the chef creates delicious food with a warmth and responsiveness that makes it feel like it's a friend in your home. The staff are always responsive, helpful, and savvy enough to know the right balance between making sure guests are served, and not drawing attention to themselves. I would highly recommend Bacco Catering for any special event.

Do you want to know the definition of Excellence? Hire Luisa c/o De Cicco's Event Planning! I have never worked with a more professional, friendly company. Luisa has a way of catering to her client's and making them feel like they're at the top of her priority list. If you need her, drop her an E-mail and she IMMEDIATELY gets back to you. Need a personal Chef to teach you how to cook? Luisa can connect you with top of the line quality professional's that KNOW what they're doing in the kitchen. I'm currently taking lesson's from her Chef and I went from being a novice who's food was either bland, burnt and completely un-edible, to a person who can now chop, dice and make a meal so good, my family calls me asking me to cook for them again. Luisa and her staff are so friendly, so welcoming and very attentive to the needs of the client. Luisa has done a fine job in picking her staff and I’m extremely happy I hired her company because it was worth every penny.

Aldolfo was the ultimate professional from the very first interaction. Our party was a huge success mostly because Aldoflo and his helper made everyone comfortable (especially my husband and I). The food was perfect! Delicious, appetizingly presented, appropriately portioned and hot foods hot, cold foods cold!

Chef Laura did an outstanding job catering a baby shower luncheon I hosted for my sister in Amityville, NY. Even through a snowstorm, she came on time and cooked a fantastic meal for 11 ladies. We had 3 apps passed around, a soup and salad (per honoree's request), main and cupcakes for dessert. All my guests were raving about how delicious the food was. My sister has one of the best days of her life! I'd book Chef Laura again in a heartbeat.

Whether you are having a small get together for a few or a large gathering, be rest assured that your event will be amazing! Chef Michel is extremely professional, respectful, and friendly! He catered 2 events for our family and we were very pleased with both. The first was a party of nearly 100 people celebrating our son’s college graduation and daughter’s high school graduation. Our second event was a last minute post Thanksgiving weekend family get together for 12-15 people. Everything from the planning, to taste testing, and delivery was on point. Aside from the food being beyond mouth watering delicious, he coordinated with outside vendors to provide everything we needed to make the graduation event beautiful. He also provided on site chefs and wait staff, all of which were professional and attentive to details. They were flexible in their assigned roles and remained past the scheduled time to attend to our guests and clean up. Our home was left as clean as it was when they arrived! Chef Michel prides himself on delivering the best quality and freshest foods possible. Other than a few items that required pre-prep (like marinating / slow cooking...definitely try the roast pork and roast chicken) everything was prepared (cut, fried, cooked, assembled etc) on site. This truly makes a difference when you’re serving items like empanadas or tostones with avocado and shrimp (both highly recommended). Chef Michel is very creative. Whether you choose something from his printed menus, have other items in mind, or even have a special recipe that you want him to prepare...HE CAN DO IT! An important point to make about his catering style is that he is so proud of his creations that he wants everyone to be able to taste everything that he prepares. If you choose an appetizer and you have 100 people, you are not going to get 1 or 2 pieces per person or be charged by the piece, like most caterers. He will make sure you have more than enough for everyone. The same applies to your main course. We had leftovers for ourselves, even after our guests took food home. With all of this said, I truly feel that his prices are fair and reasonable! I could write more and would be more than happy to speak to anyone who has any questions, but I’ll end with...make sure you try his homemade ice creams (our favorites were coconut and pineapple), flan, and especially the sangria!

We cannot say enough good things about SGS catering, especially Chef Grant. We had about 80 guests and a limited budget. But he was very accommodating in working with us. Great communications all the way till the day of our event. We also had some guests bring in food as a partial potluck. The chefs were really helpful and quick in organizing everything. We also had a vegetarian guest who inquired about vegetarian options before dinner was served. When dinner was ready an hour later, the server found her in the crowd and served her a vegetarian plate (we had a buffet style). I also made a two tiered cake myself for the event as I like to bake. As I was getting ready to assemble a tiered cake for the first time, Chef Grant pulled out his great decoration skills and made my cake look beautiful! We cannot say enough thank you for all the great help! Last but not the least, the food was amazing! The guests were all talking about how much they liked it. We are very happy there was leftovers so we can keep enjoying the food for days. We would definitely go back to them again if we ever need catering for any other events. Thank you again SGS Catering for everything!

Tara is fantastic! She catered an event for me at the Anthropologie Store in Short Hills. From start to finish she was extremely professional. She suggested menu items based on my theme for the event and then customized them for our esthetic. Not only did everything look good it tasted amazing. Our customers in Short HIlls, NJ have a very sophisticated palette and they raved about the food. I would certainly use Tara again for any event we would have in the store big or small. She is a talented chef, professional and easy to work with. Jennifer Burnley, Personal Stylist and Event Planner, Anthropologie

My experience with Chef Leo has only been positive, fun and delightful. He is very professional and has extensive knowledge about all culinary areas (from savory to sweets). He holds himself to the highest standards of quality and creativity, and is able to adapt to one's specific diet, taste and preference. Unlike many chefs, whom seem stressful while in the kitchen, chef Leo is very calm. His food is delicious and prepared to perfection. Highly recommend him.

My wife and I were extremely overwhelmed with all the choices and possibilities, Chef Julz made the whole process painless and tasty! She offered a tasting before our event to narrow down our options and made her own suggestions based on expertise. The day of the event she prepared everything with her team and made our day that much easier. Our guest loved the food. Thank you Chef Julz for everything!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
