Mr. Vasquez did a superb job for me. His work was quality, timely and competitively priced. I was so pleased that I have hired him for other projects -- carpentry, painting and general repair

We found Bruce on Thumbtack and this was the first time we took a quote from someone on this app. Our first impressions were great! For those who have had work done before, getting a contractor to show up on time when they say they will be there is half the battle sometimes. Bruce showed up when he said he would be there with what he needed to quote the job (again I cannot tell you how many times contractors will show up with nothing). Very professional and left a good first impression. We eventually hired him for the job of designing and building built ins around our fireplace. He based his designs of some ideas I found online, but his architectural skills of aesthetically designing the project to fit into our space were excellent and exactly what we wanted from him! The end result (which turned into a phase 2 project to again design and build an aesthetic beam and pillars separating our open floor plan and flow into the built ins he just made) was literally perfect. Matched our taste, design of the house and the craftsmen ship was some of the best I have seen. I don't like to talk cost because everyone has their own opinion on what is considered expensive however what I can say is he had 3 change orders on the whole project (one of which was a good size relatively speaking to the built in project) and he was clearly very fair and right in line with my expectations. This speaks volumes on the type of person and businessman he is. A++ contractor and will 100% be using him again in the future!

I had been shopping around for not just a painter. I needed Someone that could not only paint well but could also fix all the woodwork and walls. In my house. After I spoke to a few other companies. I had been referred to anthony. And I would say to anyone that wants a truly beautiful outcome on there projects at home or work. Give this guy a try. I rate him a 5 star for service. ( listens to what I wanted ). Performance. ( his work iis excellent can't say enough on the end result here). Pricing ( he was a little higher than some of the others. But. He didn't just paint here either light carpentry too. But when he was done. It was well worth it. have to say.

Robert Price of Robert Price Cabinetry produced a custom-made desk that is exactly what we had wanted. His design input and technical know-how were invaluable, and the swiftness with which he brought our project from idea to reality was fantastic. It was easy and pleasant to work with him. We give him our strongest recommendation.

We had a long list of structural concerns and other projects around the house. Justin has such a well of talent and breadth of skill he was able to address all of them. He moved quickly from one to the other, maximizing his efficiency and our affordability. I will always call Justin first for any construction, woodworking, or project management projects. I give him my highest recommendation.

We asked Jon to build eve-pediments for the front and back gables of our 1899 house in the Mystic Connecticut Historic District. The artistry, workmanship and professionalism he displayed was top notch. Every detail was perfect. The project was completed on time and at the agreed price. We were very satisfied and would be happy to have him work here again.

In December of 2011, I purchased a dim, run-down townhouse suffering from a bad case of shag carpeting, “band-aid” carpentry and nearly 30 years of neglect. To call it a "fixer-upper" would be an understatement--rather I had to completely gut it and start over from scratch. I hired Tom Mucherino to take care of the remodeling and bring it back to life, and I couldn’t be happier with the work. Tom is very easy to work with--he shows up when he says he will, stays in good communication, and was always very helpful and informative when it came to making decisions. Among other things, he handled all the demolition, completely re-did my kitchen and bathroom, replaced all of the damaged drywall in the house, sanded and refinished the upstairs floors, and installed new floors on the other two levels. Tom is a perfectionist, taking the time to make sure everything was done right, and his committment to his work shows; everything he did met or exceeded my expectations. He even put in a custom spice rack, and built me a new set of stairs to my upstairs loft!      Today, my house is absolutely gorgeous--I get compliments from everyone who visits about how light, bright, and airy and modern it is. I would recommend him without reservation to anyone needing a good contractor.

Fred Albee built a bookcase that came out magnificent. The great thing was that during the design process Fred provided some unique design ideas because of his vast amount of experience and hands on craftsmanship. When we first spoke I asked about a bookcase and what was delivered was a piece of furniture that included crown molding and base molding that was meticulously mitered into the existing room moldings. The finish was perfect and flawless. EXCELLENT JOB!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
