Chris catered a dinner party at my apartment and everything was top notch. He arrived promptly, had enough time to get organized before the guests arrived, and looked very professional. The presentation of the food was as delicious as it tasted. My friend helped organize the menu and every course was more delicious than the next. I look forward to having him caterer more frequently, as well as teach cooking classes. Chris' professionalism and attentiveness was incredible. Thank you again for a wonderful evening!

Charly was great! The food was equally as great! We made a minor (more like major) mistake or requesting Charly for a dinner for 4 people, where we actually needed it for 6! When Charly came over to start preparing, we realized we needed more food! Charly was quick to figure out how to make the courses work out with the food he already brought - he says he always comes prepared with extras! He even had extra menus, so that also worked out! He was also a good sport about stepping out with us on a quick supermarket trip and buy some extra main courses :-). All-in-all, we were impressed by his patience and preparedness even before he started cooking. As for the cooking, he prepared an amazing meal and his presentation of food is incredible! Like going to a Michelin restaurant at home. Hands down the best Chocolate lava cake we've ever had!!! Thanks Charly!!

Chef Alana made our first Father’s Day a huge success! From her menu creation for our private Father’s Day BBQ to her flexibility for taking on the job despite some circumstances - Chef Alana prepared an incredible meal that tasted amazing and made sure we were taken care of throughout the evening. Her flavors and cooking techniques clearly make her an expert in her field. On top of it all, she was very easy to work with and managed dietary preferences well. Her menu was thoughtful, elevated and elegant. I couldn’t have imagined a better event!!

via Melissa, or "Chef Melissa" as we call her, exceeded our expectations! We took her from her usual route of healthy food and asked her to run a cooking class so that children with Celiac Disease could make and enjoy cupcakes on the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. She was really flexible and provided what felt and looked like "regular" cupcakes but modified for strict gluten-free compliance and somehow they were a little healthy too! All natural. even organic and dairy-free where possible. The ages of children who attended ranged from 4-12 and she worked really well with everyone! She set up before we (event organizers) arrived and had a friendly helper with her. They were professional but the kids related to them very well. The parents were all pleased and her rate was really reasonable! Our support group doesn't make any money from events like this, parents paid her directly and she was accepting last-minute additions without any worries. I can't think of a single negative - in fact we'd like to work with her again this year! Oh, and she even took the work of finding a location away from us (we're 2 volunteers who run this group for our children and others). Next class, we'll go a little healthier and really take advantage of ALL that via Melissa has to offer our kids! :) Oh, and she's even sending us kid-friendly, healthy and gluten-free recipes for us to share with the families in our group! She really goes above and beyond!

My friend and I took cooking classes from her. I can truly say that she was amazing. She taught us to make food we wanted to learn and it turned out amazing. She is a great teacher and makes it easy to apply what you learn from her and the things you learn in class to other recipes outside of what we did in class. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to learn how to cook.

Jennifer was prompt in her response to my inquiry about a holiday meal/cooking class, creative in coming up with solutions to meet our family member's dietary constraints, and very easy to work with in planning the menu. Her prices are very reasonable! The food was very good and we had fun watching and helping a bit with the preparation. We would recommend her.

We had a great experience with Leo as our private cook for a party that we organized for about 40 friends. Throughout the whole process, Leo was a good communicator and open to our ideas. In conversations, he was respectful and professional. At one point, when we felt like a particular item was too expensive for our budget and asked for a change in plan, Leo immediately accommodated our request. On the actual day of our event, Leo showed up with all prepared materials (even organic!) he needed and made himself at home in our kitchen. He was incredibly self sufficient and did not need much assistance. We felt so at ease with him making the main meal for our event. When it came time to serve, he added the finishing touches of different components of the dish to ensure the dish was fresh. The food turned out to be incredibly flavorful and delicious that our guests frequently paid him compliments throughout the evening. Leo showed incredibly professionalism and his superb work ethic makes me confident to recommend him to anyone who would like to host a stress-free dinner party. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I have hired Chef Jackie Newgent to cater a party of mine in the past; everything she made was so fresh and delicious! All dishes were beautifully presented. I finally had time to take a private cooking class from her and was equally impressed. I now know the right way to hold a chef's knife, slice scallions on a bias and "cream" garlic. Cooking with Chef Jackie is a fun experience! I highly recommend both her personal chef work AND her private cooking lessons!

We had a cooking lesson with chef Sterling, with three friends it was a total blast. It was like a collage class but real fun. We learned all the basics, cutting, sautéing, roasting. The music made us relax. We can’t wait for our next class.

I found Chef Robo (Rob) after searching online for in-home cooking lessons in the New York area. Rob got back to me quickly and we scheduled a class for the following weekend. On the day of the class, he met my husband and I at our house, where the three of us sat down and settled on a menu. Rob gave great guidance and plenty of options. We then went shopping together for ingredients at a local supermarket, where Rob gave advice on how to select for best quality. Once back home, Rob started with the basics we needed including knife skills and how best to prep one's work space. We both found Rob extremely easy to learn from and very patient with novices. He taught extremely useful tips and shortcuts throughout. By the end of four hours total, we had learned how to make an excellent holiday dinner including two appetizers, two mains, and two sides. We got so much out of the class, we took a second with Rob soon after! A week or so after the classes, when my husband and I were preparing the meal for our party, Rob answered several follow-up questions we texted to him. Then, Rob followed up with us to ask how the meal turned out. The food was a huge hit, everything from the apps through to the main meal really impressed our guests! Rob greatly raised our cooking abilities and confidence, and I highly recommend his classes.

I hired chef Hellard to accommodate my business schedule and help me eat healthier. As someone who works a lot of hours I could not get out of the rut of ordering in for Lunch and Dinner and decided to try something different. A friend recommended Rae and I hired her a few days a week to cook dinner for my family and prepare a few meals I could take to work and eat at home on nights where I was working late. Rae is very accommodating and did an excellent job finding extremely healthy and delightful meals that refrigerated well and were just as fresh a few days after preparation. She has helped me transform my eating habits and I find I have a lot more energy and time to do what needs to get done every day. That being said, with a little more flexibility for family dinners Rae has come up with some extremely unique and delicious meals that my whole family enjoys. We used to go out to eat twice a week but since we hired Rae we enjoy 5 star meals from the comfort of our home. After a long day at work there is nothing I look forward to more than coming home, relaxing, and having a professionally cooked meal in which I don't have to lift a finger. I highly recommend Rae to anyone that wants to be pampered and enjoy a first class chef in the comfort of their home. On a personal level level Rae is very friendly, outgoing, and courteous. She is someone that clearly takes pride in her work and is passionate about food and experimenting with new dishes. I have always found in house help to be a bit distracting and awkward but Rae is very unobtrusive, professional, and a delight to have around the house. Oh yeah, she is also great at custom cakes, cookies, and other treats which make a great gifts come time for birthdays or other events. Just one more added level of convenience.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
