Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

I hired Denova’s to paint my entire house interior - ceilings, walls, trim, doors. The job was completed within the promised timeframe, and everything looks spectacular. I especially appreciate the time they took to prepare the walls, removing old blemishes and caulking cracks. I highly recommend, and will definitely be hiring this company for future painting jobs.

Absolutely fantastic! Efficient and available on short notice. I will be hiring them again to do a much larger interior paint job, but I have added a few pictures of the lower level bedroom with en suite bathroom that they painted. Great value, great work, and really great attitude! Ricardo and his brother were a pleasure to have in my home!

I requested an interior paint job on my rowhouse in DC. He was on-time everyday and very responsive to requests. He removed an old popcorn ceiling, and made the house basically look brand new. I would hire again and recommend to my friends.

We had Carlos and team do both the interior and exterior painting of our Cap Hill home The Pros: - reasonably priced - quick - easy to schedule Cons: - very messy. On the interior paint was on the white kitchen cabinets, floors...not good clean up. With the exterior it was a bit worse. Paint was all over our brand new steps, our neighbors steps and brick.....they forgot to paint the trim of one of our windows and thought the job was complete. - Carlos asks for the money up front. I gave him a deposit the second time to be paid in full when it was completed to my satisfaction. They had to return an additional time to fix the messes (and fortunately did) to collect the rest. - after our job was completed, we noticed many spots on our neighbors house. It took 3+ weeks (and several broken promises) to get him to return to fix next door. He did a wonderful job but it took countless unreturned phone calls and texts! If you need cheap, quick painting this is an option. Do not pay fully up front until everyone is completely clean and expected.

I hired Keith Thomas to paint the interior walls of my 3br/2ba house and I was pleased with the work quality, value and punctuality. He made sure I knew all my options and his quote was very reasonable. Keith and his assistant started early in the morning and completed the job in 16 hours. I look forward to working with him on future household projects.

Interior painting job. We hired because they quoted a relatively cheap price but it isn't worth it. You will just end up paying a real painter to touch it up. The guys sent by Senior Errand Solutions had very poor attention to detail and did not seem to have much interior painting experience at all. The job was incredibly sloppy, even after my husband told them about the flaws he noticed and after I texted the boss, Tony. They didn't bring their own lighting like a professional interior painter should, they had drop cloth but did not use tape. The edges are terrible, and where they used small brushes you can clearly see unevenness and brush strokes as if they didn't even do a second coat. When I started pointing out how awful the edges were before they were about to leave, they barely did anything to correct the issues and one even said they should leave before I find something else I want them to fix. I offered to send photos of how bad the job was to the owner and he just said "are you kidding me?" And then stopped responding. Just cashed my check rather than make it right. Avoid at all costs!!!!!

I hired Superior Lawns & Cleaning Services to paint the interior of my home -- living room, dining, kitchen, stairs and upstairs hallway. Dwayne and his team were wonderful. They were professional and on time for both days of work. The pricing did change from initial estimate using photos to Dwayne seeing it in person, but it wasn't drastic. The paint cost estimate also changed. I had to use photos for my estimates because we had not yet closed on the house and I had no way for Dwayne to get in and see it in person to provide a substantial quote, so the change was understandable. The finished work was great and I'm very pleased. I will most definitely use them again for future projects.

Carlos and his crew painted the interior of our house. They did a great job even though the house is old and had an inferior paint job previously. The results are great, the crew was courteous and super fast (it only took two partial days to paint the entire house), and Carlos was in communication during the job whenever there were questions. He also offered to do some things we hadn't talked about previously, for a better price, and did not pressure me or make me feel like he was "upcharging" for more services. The only room for improvement would be in their clean up: I spent longer scrubbing the sinks where they rinsed paint tools since there was paint splatters everywhere, and more paint splotches on the hardwood floor than I would have liked. All of them came off with a little scrubbing. That said, there were no areas of dripping or sloppiness on the walls itself. Also, I pointed out a few missed spots and imperfect areas that I think could have been caught without my inspecting - the attention to detail was sometimes lacking, but whenever I pointed something out there was no issue in correcting it quickly. Carlos and his crew are fast, friendly, and efficient, and so I would just recommend double-checking the work before they leave and communicating if anything is not perfect. Overall very satisfied with everything and will call them back if I need any other services. Good to know they do drywall and other work, too!

Julio did a great job painting the interior ceilings and walls of my 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home. I called him at the last minute and fortunately he had a large crew ready to go. He uses high quality paint, he sanded down imperfections in the walls, used two coats and was done remarkably fast. When he and his crew arrived the first thing they did was proceed to cover everything. He was very careful not to cause any damage, always removing shoes when they came in the house. I have not seen any drips or marks left anywhere. Most importantly, when I goofed up on a color he immediately fixed the mistake. He went above and beyond. We are thrilled with his work and would hire him again in a heartbeat. He knows what he is doing and does it well.
